It can only mean one thing... God was punishing them for believing in him. He wants everyone to be an atheist. You're right, someone has to tell it to those nutcases so the paradox makes their heads explode.

It was a metal cross... what kind of a jackass makes a metal cross in an area with that kind of weather activity?

It should have been a traditional wooden cross or of some other "classic" material.

God is like me, he enjoys watching people make asses of themselves... hence, god is a jerk.
