I think I'm pretty much the opposite of straight edge. I was never really able to understand the appeal, or what good could come out of saying no to all those things.
Perhaps by looking at the effect it has on other people?Originally Posted by Cloud_Walker

I guess I was striaghtedged in high school, although I didn't think to label myself as such. I moved on during university. I still refuse to smoke or do drugs.
Do they only see beligerent, violent, stupid drunks and drugees, or are those just the ones that stand out? No, definitely limited POV.Originally Posted by S Z
That people who do those miss out on those things in life? Interesting, because the people that do those things have tried both and chose what's best for them. Can't say that about people who've never tried anything.Originally Posted by Lostprophet

I feel threatened by people who don't do drugs and then claim to know how bad they are and how i'm ruining my life by doing them.My God man, does the existence of people who choose not to do drugs really threaten you to the point where you feel the need to stoop to this level immaturity? That is some sad ****.
I can see the difference. I was just pointing out imprecise wording. There's an obvious difference between recreational drugs and medicines.Originally Posted by S Z
I also want to point out that even with my history, I will be getting a job out of college at the tune of $60,000 a year so suck it. Weed had no adverse mental effects on me personally, so don't talk nonsense please.
However, some of those medicines can be abused. I'm also interested where you classify caffeine.

And I've given my view on caffiene. I would love to hear a medical definition that did not include it. I think the definition would have to be a bit convoluted to avoid adding it.
responsible use of alcohol (wine) is healthy. so what reason is there to avoid it?
And if they do see beligerant, violent or stupid drunks, and those drunks are their own relations, does that make their decision the wrong one?Originally Posted by Cloud_Walker
How about if their mother died of lung cancer? Perhaps they just don't like the risk to their health, and cost of smokes?
For drugs, there is the whole illegality thing. Plus the risk to health, plus a dislike for not being in 100% control of ones own actions.
As for sex before marriage, there may be religion, morality or just plain butt-uglyness in the way.
Don't ever assume that a so-called straightedge takes only a limited point of view, for in at least one case you would be wrong. In fact, never assume anything when it comes to people motivations, on any topic.
EDIT:
It obviously had an impact on you understanding of my posts. And Whoop-de-do, you want a cookie?Originally Posted by DPH

How many of you straightedged people have ever killed something? Whether it be a person, an animal, an insect, or even a dream?
How many of you not-so-straightedged people have ever saved a life? Whether from a cliff, from a downward spiral, or even an animal from weather?
How many of you at all have cared and loved and seen the world for what a wondrous place it truely can be?
I think that to each his own. Morals -are- relative, but why put down someone's that in their mind yours are below par? I normally am cynical and push my viewpoint down someone else's throat, but never do I earnestly hate theirs. There are points from both sides, and the choice is one's own to make, but why get exasperated about something so simple?
