I must say, I am a single player from waaay back.

My favourite character is my first assassin, which I called Alandria. She was a matriarch before I realised that her name could be rearranged as Andariel.
She made level88 or so before I learned of the 'players X' feature - and that was not easy. She found everything she owned. She did all my magic finding.
She made level 97 before I upgraded to 1.10. She nearly single handedly completed my grail quest (I had 15 or so items remaining).
I can't remember much more. I can't remember if I got her to 98 or not, but I found 1.10 hard, and my girlfriend found it harder. I didn't find ANY of the new uniques that 1.10 had to offer.... So we left it behind.
Not only that but I was disappointed with a couple mistakes I had made with her build. I accidently put a point into energy. I put too many points in fade and venom. Things like that. I mean, she held her own, but she wasn't "perfect".

I also had a level 90's werewolf druid, and a high level (68 or so) HC assassin named "Taerigi". I had one of each character, but those were probably my better achievements.

When I got my new PC, I installed LOD and left it at 1.07. I didn't originally get much quality time with 1.07 because 1.09 came out soon after I started playing, and in those times I had heard great things about 1.07 and 1.08, but was on my quest for the holy grail (so close, but didn't quite get there!), so I never looked into it.

So I have made the leap. My new assassin is called "Ninjastar" (yeah, creative, isn't it!?) and she just made level 70. You can't do players X, so I think that's a fair achievement with no help even from Atma. I mean, she's not HC or anything, but she's 70. Mind you, she's stuck in Act 4 hell, can't get to (or past) Diablo. Damn Lord De Seiss, or whatever his name is. Lord Disaster, I call him. Except never to his face.

But now so much time has passed that I can't remember anything about 1.07. I can't remember the great crafting recipes, or rune words (if there were even any!) and what was great about 1.07 that I should retain for later on when I upgrade. Sure, charms can have more +dmg, I remember that, and yes rares have more abilities. So that's the two I remember.
I read in another thread on the front page that prismatic (6pg + ammy) makes nicer ammies, and that is the sort of info I'm looking for. And because I'm so stuck in Act4 Hell, this is what I need.

Speaking of Atma, I just recently downloaded her, and I notice that I can't take items from one version to another, and also I can't seem to open my 1.10 characters to view them or create a stash from them. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

What version should I download to be able to open all chars from 1.07 to 1.10?

What sort of character builds should I try that are fun in 1.07 but nerfed in other versions? I was thinking maybe a venomancer, or a venomsassin but I haven't found many poison charms yet. Nor any unique daggers. Nor the Burrito.

Lastly, I notice that when I run Mephisto (Nightmare mode, where I can live, while wearing MF) I only seem to find rares. But not one or two rares - everything Mephisto drops is rare. Just a whole screen of yellow, and never any green or gold. Is this a bug in 07? Or do I just need a smidgeon more MF equipped?

Hello, welcome to SPF. When doing your Mephisto runs try running it in the one below nightmare, can't think of what it is called because I haven't played in a while, but it could make things different. Try it and let me know how it goes.

It sounds like your doing something wrong. What happens if you try to open a 1.10 d2s file?

Of ATMA or the game? The latest version of both should be fine.

yeah, it does sound like I'm doing something wrong. I haven't got D2x 1.10 installed, anymore. If I open them in ATMA, I get an error message, but I can't recall the message.
I'm downloading the new ATMA now, (Good timing to return, no!?) and I might install a second copy of Diablo to upgrade one and not the other. Is that effective? Or will it be my ruin?

Yes, I've forgotten all about "synergies" - I remember having Natalya's full set in 1.10 but no idea what the synergies are or can do.
However, in 1.07 there was a miscalculation on poison, I believe. It stacks. This was removed in 1.09 if I recall.
So every time you deal damage when hit a monster in 1.07, it starts a new poison timer, and so if you hit them three times, you're doing three times as much poison damage - well that's how I understand it.
In 1.09 if you hit it three times, you just reset the timer each time.

At least, that's how I remember understanding it... Like I said, it's been a long time.

By the way, I *did* do some normal mode mephisto runs on the weekend, and the drops there were awful, although most came up as set items. (Which isn't bad, since I started fresh!)

But he drops useless stuff there so I went back to Nightmare mode - must have got a better map seed, because he started dropping a few mild uniques like Razorswitch. So that answers that question!
