On countess drops in normal, did they change the minimum drops too? Haven't gotten a el, eld, tir or nef rune from the special rune drop yet (around 200 runs with different chars, I use tower for xp too). The only "low" rune I've got from the countess was eld, but that was a 2 rune drop, so it might be the "normal" runedrop every monster can have.
Others in the hardcore forum also had similar effects, so I was wondering about it.
Basically: The rune rarities are messed up. Whoever changed them probably didn't take into account how the chances get calculated.

With maphack 30-40s per room. I'm playing in private server, so mh is allowed. I think she will drop 1 mid rune in about 70 runs. Never have higher than pul :(

Is it worth it to keep all the chips and flawed gems + mid runes like amn/shael to dol/io for the purpose up upping them through the cube till you reach HR level? Cause I might as well keep em while hunting for higher runes + terror keys.
Im using every and any opportunity for profit on the new ladder season. I didn't do that ages ago and it toke me a year to obtain my first enigma :(
It's not worth cubing Dols trying to get HRs. It's worth cubing them to get Hels though, which are useful in their own right. I'm too lazy to calculate how many Dols there are in a Ber right now (OK, I lied: if I calculated it correctly there are around 838,000), but there are a _lot_. It's like the old story about the guy who asks for a reward of one grain of rice on the first square of a chessboard, two on the next, four on the next, eight on the next, etc. Sounds reasonable, until you consider that there will be 2^63 grains of rice on just the last square- that's a lot of rice.
you're never going to make an HR out of amns. lol that would take FOREVER.
as for cubing runes, i don't do it for most runes, most have uses.
the only ones i find it worthwhile to cube up are:
shael to dol,
dol to hel,
io to lum,
lum to ko.
i save ral/sol for crafting, tal thul ort amn for spirit sets, hel for remove socket horodric cube recipe after socketing a spirit with tal thul ort amn.
so basically tal thul ort amn + hel = chance of getting a 35 spirit which can be resold for a heck of a lot more than a random spirit. So keep those runes, and just keep rerolling 4 soc monarchs till you hit money.
sols are used with prubies for blood rings, rals are used with pamethysts for caster amulets. shaels are generally useless so i cube them up to dols, also useless, cube those up to hel.
anything less than tal i don't pick up.
Wealth doesn't come easy. And finding these runes is a question of running NM countess, I find if I kill all on the way to tower 5 I get the lower runes from the random monsters by the time countess has dropped me an amn and a tul.
SP is a little different since you don't have a player economy of course. It takes some time to get the runes for spirit, but a good spirit sells for items that would take a lot longer to mf for. I'm guessing you're more likely to find the runes for spirit than finding a SoJ for example. So you use the spirit to get the SoJ and save time overall...
