What version of the OS is it running? There was one update for Panther (10.3.5?) where OpenGL was broken, so D2 would only run at a reasonable pace in software mode (which it automatically switches to when you go to windowed mode.) I just thought I would mention that on the off chance you were using that version. If that is the case, a simple update will solve the problem.
