I recently started a HC Lord Of The Mages (untwinked/1.11) and I noticed that unless I play on players 1, my mages damage is pitiful. I don't expect to be able to get anywhere in hell with such a character, but I was thinkin perhaps I could mod my skellies to do more damage.
I'm not sure if Mods are allowed to be discussed on this forum, I checked the FAQ and I didn't see anything stating we couldn't discuss them here.
So I was wondering, how exactly would I go about editing them to bring there damage up (only slightly, I want this to be a viable, yet underpowered character, and my first Guardian). Mind you i have zero knowledge of modding and such. I'm pretty much looking for a step-by-step idiot proof guide, like what programs I need, where to go etc.
I did think of going to the Phrozen Forums for this, but I tried to register and it simply won't allow me to do so (I hit submit after filling in everything completely, and it resets the form and tells me nothing).
Any help would be appreciated.
Copy from the rules of DiabloII.net:
3. Thou Shalt Not Advertise. We do not intend to serve as a linking service or a search engine to other sites. Links that wouldn't be allowed anywhere on the forums (including signatures, and location) would be to links to sites (commercial OR personal) that have:
1. Pornographic, racist or illegal materials, including game cheats or hacks
2. Profit sites (any get rich quick sites). This is sites that earn the poster a profit/commission or sites that give points for incoming links
3. Sites offering similar or the same content as DiabloII.Net. It has taken many 'man' hours to compile the sites' content and as such our commitment to the promotion of that content is total. Neither do we allow visitors to use our forum membership as a means to build their own sites from, using our Private Messaging system to recruit writers and/or their content or membership drives for their own forums.
5. Thou Shalt Not Pimp or aid the Pimping of hacks, Cheats or Farming. Hacks and Cheats are 3rd party programs that allow you to alter the way a player interacts with a game. This includes, but not restricted to Maphack and Pindlebot. We do not support the use of these. You may not ask for help in creating a hack/cheat, a link to where you can find one, provide a link to where people can download one. However, the morality of using these programs is sometimes discussed and we allow these [within reason], unless it violates any other rule.
Sorry, this isn't the place to ask something like that. Try google. If you want to know more about rules, in the upper part part of the page, in a link is the "rules" of D2.net
As side note, it's indeed viable. Max raise skellie mage, max skellie mastery, put some points into lower resist and have many +skills equipment and you can kill things in hell, just, as you said, be prepared for an slooooow travel, especially if you don't know how to command them
First of all, I'm not talking about hacking/cheating. I'm not talking about any site whatsoever (cept that Phrozen won't work). Im not talking about my own, site, I'm not trying to recruit people.Originally Posted by Arreat_mercenary

If I remember didn't someone recently post here talking about the ES mod? Thats why I thought it would be okay. Also, I remember a character called a "fartarian" (barb using dual wirt's) needed some tinkering with the game files and there was even a tourny about it. I don't see why other people can post about these things that I cant'.
Telling me to goto to google in extremely rude of you, if I wanted to waste 2 hours of my life searching for something I'll never find I wouldn't have come here.
Sorry but you asked for how to "edit" and what programs to use, that pretty clearly falls under "hacks", which is just as clearly forbidden to discuss here. Wasn't here for the "fartarian" or whatever, so can't comment on that.Originally Posted by GodofWar
If you're looking on how to increase damage strictly in-game (i.e. raising skills, different equipment, tactics, etc.), you might try the necromancer forum
You don't have to be signed at Phrozen keep, just search the stickies there. Look for an "Idiot's guide to modding" (or something like that) and description of txt file where skills are described (skills.txt ?).
But you need to understand that you have to use such a mod separetly from your vanilla characters. All items found while using the mod are "marked" modded and can't be trade with vanilla/different mod players or you will be banned here. Also characters using the mod can't be mixed with normal characters.
Otherwise it's considered cheating and that is something really don't like here. So excuse Arreat's rather rude answer, but we don't discuss mod creating/support here. (I think I went against the rule myself while trying to help you...)
EDIT: What is it with some of you guys? I think that mods are different game than Diablo II LOD 1.11b. They are no evil if the user don't use them as cheat in vanilla, only playing them separetly from vanilla. You play other game too...
How do you figure out if something is 'marked'? Is there ANY visual indication?Originally Posted by Hrus
Back to the original question, if you were to equip your merc with an Infinity runeword polearm it would give you a level 12 conviction IIRC. That would lower the monsters resistance and increase the damage they do. Some big runes in that word though. (Ber + Mal + Ber + Ist)
^ Nope (at Minky).
Anyway, I doubt anyone has made a mod to "increase Skeletal Mage damage". It's not a usual subject.
Now, I am not hinting nor promoting nor suggesting you methods to improve damage! But this I will say: Skeletal Mage damage can be improved by the Infinity Runeword, and Annihilus (the pick-up sequence is bypassed with ATMA).
Anyway, I don't really see why you would want to play an underpowered character if you're just going to give it more damage to make it more usable.
I'm sorry if I sounded too rude (it wasn't my intention) but reading the rules on posts hasn't killed anybody :wink3:Originally Posted by GodofWar
It's just that I (and I think also most of the SPF) is tired that the rest of the worlds sees us as a test ground for skills, builds, items, etc. And most of them even see us as "THE cheaters" while there's hardly a community as legit as this one (except for ATMA, which has made us our life A LOT easier). We HATE modding, cheating, creating, duping and all that b**llsh*t. We try to the play the game as it was tought to be (except for the ATMA part, which can be done anyway via TCP/IP just a lot longer).
Sorry for the rather first rude answer. Reading FAQ's (which you claimed you read) and rules is politely of any visitor and we're very grateful of the visitors than do so
Edit: By the way, about the fartarian and the ES mod, is a VERY reduced part of the community (you heard me Vega) and even us see those guys as the "the darkest part of the dark side"Go figure how we defend our legitness
I think that the confusion that arises about mods is that some mods are accepted around here and some are not. Before the first post about ES was made, I'm pretty sure that Vega mentioned that he PMed a mod first. Some mods can fall into the "hack" catagory, and some don't and it's better to ask than assume.
Of course it turns out that the status of such a mod is irrelevant to the question asked. The real issue here is that it has been decided that this forum would not be used to discuss the technical aspects of making or installing mods. (Which was what the original question asked for.) The Phrozen Keep is a better place for that anyhow, as it is dedicated to modding.
