running 2 copys of d2 on 1 comp

ok i have 2 copy of d2 and d2x. my second comp is down and somebody told me how to install a second copy of d2 on my comp. he also sent me a file that i would need to paste into both folder and over write what is it there. the file is

D2gfx.dll

can anybody confirm what this file does i dont fancy overwriting if this file could hold key logs and stuff.

also is there any other method which i can install a second copy on my pc?

no good. i followed what it said but when i switched users 1 of my char would drop. i think the internet connection stops to that user. any other ideas?

So you've enabled fast user switching, on WinXP (ie, I believe the computers cannot be a member of a domain)?

user fast switch? i didnt log off any user if thats what u ment. i just switched users. but i still dropped every time

It might be the Internet, or it might have something to do with the bncache.dat. I believe both copies will need a unique bncache.dat in order for them to work, and since you've probably done the sub-folder installation, it would probably only have one. The method that was explained in the link above did work prior to 1.11, so something might have changed.

This file seems to be put in the same directory that the executable file resides, so it's not a simple matter of just copying it to the subfolder. Doing 2 complete installations seems to work (install once, copy contents to another folder, uninstall and re-install again), but it takes up a huge amount of space.

I'll do abit of looking around, but for now you could test to see if it is the Internet connection dropping out. By this, I mean doing something like starting a download, and then switching users, or something.

Note: To answer part of your original question, the dll file is supposed to allow you to run two copies of Diablo 2 on the same user profile. I can't tell you much more about it because:

a) I haven't heard much about it since 1.11, so I'm not sure if there's a newer version out
b) I'm not 100% sure whether this forum supports that sort of thing, and I'm going to err on the side of caution
c) If you do decide to use it, make sure it's from a reputable source, otherwise god-knows what will happen.

1. Technically speaking, the .dll method is a hack - albeit pretty harmless but a hack nonetheless. I'm not banning for it but I do not want to allow technical assistance for getting these things running either. If you insist on using it, get help elsewhere.

2.) No providing links on where to download it. That I may ban for.

3.) You use this junk at your own risk. If you downloaded one with a keylogger and got hacked or banned or your computer explodes, don't come here to complain about it. If any of those things happen, it's 100% your own fault.

yes i understand but i have bought 2 copys of the game with earned cash. but unable to get use out of 1 of the copys.

i didnt know the .dll method would count as a hack so i am sorry for asking and wont be using that.

this was a personal e-mail so no link will be included. i wouldnt even if it was a site. (but i wouldnt use a site any way)

all i was after was a way to run 2 cd keys on 1 computer. without adding any other file or such
