I have levelled up a 1pt Smiter into the 90's, and I'll echo what the others have already said - he can take on the Ubers without raising a sweat, even with the poor to middle-class setup I was using.
The first time I took him to play in Uber Tristram, my plan to lure out the ubers one at a time somehow went wrong. I was smiting away when I realised I was fighting Baal and not Mephisto. Mephy came up behind me to try and give me the UFIA, so I started smiting him instead. Moments later, Diablo joined the party, and I was stuck in the midst of three ubers.
While I was eating the damage without problems. My Hammerdin friend, who was supposed to keep the flies off me, soon succumbed to the onslaught and bit the dust. By the time he had left and rejoined the game, I had killed all three ubers and was cleaning up the minions that remained.
As promised, I have written up a comparison on the 1pt Smiter with the Warrior-Monk I was previously using for ubering - the post is in the General Forum. In short though, the 1pt Smiter is superior for ubering with modest equipment and is easier to play in general PvM, though both characters are very good in different ways.
I find that it is easier with a zeal/smite hybrid because of the similarity in the gear and the skills. A smiter has no use for FCR or Concentration (no IAS)that the Hammerdin needs, whereas he can really use the IAS from gear and Fanatacism that the Zealot already has.
I've been following this guide pretty closely, but my smite damage is lower than I really would have expected.
Skills:
20 fant.
20 sacrifice
20 fanatacism
16 holy shield (working on it)
and then prequesites
I'm only a 76, so I still have some room to improve
Gear :
Grief Pb (36)
dracul's gloves
Verdungos
15 ed Chains of Honor archon plate
Ravon frost/ dwarf star
Exile eth rondache
guill face
highlords
Not sure on boots, but I know they're the right ones....
No torch/anni as of date, but to be expected in the near future
I have 6/6/1 cta and (forgot name  +2 shield) EDIT : Spirit*
Nothing too much in my inventory yet, just been leveling.
attributes:
100 strength
150 dext
250 vitality
15 energy
I think the smite damage on my shield is 20-28, not positive though.
My zeal damage is amazing, even in hell, I can walk myself through anywhere that I could possibly want to go. But when I switch to smite, it really takes a while to get the killing done. I have 40% life tap, and 55%(ish) crushing blow, with enough life leeches to keep me alive. I think I have 25% open wounds, and 35% deadly strike.
I was just wondering if anyone could tell me how to get my smite damage up for ubers !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks in advance, sorry for the long read-

You don't need to. Crushing blow does most of the work. You just need a healthy 2k smite (I have even done it with 600 damage) so that you can easily leech enough (which I am sure you have). By the way, your smite shield damage doesn't matter much neither because of grief.
I hope when you say Exile eth rondache, you mean sacred rondache. That could be part of your damage problem. You will also see an improvement when you finish maxing Holy shield, since it adds directly to the shield's damage. Lastly, use the calculator that was posted a few posts back to check your real damage - the screen has no idea how good you really are.
you're right about the shield.
So basically, I just need to keep leveling, and put it all into holy shield.
After that, should I then just put some into smite (stun duration, etc.), because my exile has a lvl 15 defiance aura already on me...
I would really like to see a screenshot of Exile in a buckler...considering that it can only be made in Pally shields, or a Monarch/Aegis/Ward.
/sarcasm
I get your point though, the Grief damage is the most important thing. I still think it is pointless to put Exile into anything less than a high damage/AR or high resist elite pally shield.
