Which axe should I use to create the BotD runeword? I want an axe, not a sword. Please keep in mind this is for my Paladin, so I believe a one-handed axe would be best, or am I asking too much.

Better go for eth berserker axe as mentioned above, it has the best reselling value as well.
You forgot about a war spike.
As far as 2 handed weapons go, champion axe and glorious axe can get 6 sockets as well.
War spike is faster but has less damage. And since botd gives 60% ias berserker axe is the weapon of choice.

you need to ind an eth berserker axe and socket it at hell level. it will get 6 sockets then

If you find a ethereal berserker axe (with 0 sockets ofc) it will get 6 sockets no matter what difficulty when socketing it with the Larzuck quest.
