New vid card installation help needed

I ordered a GeForce 6800GS agp and it finally came in...and well, it doesn't work.
After I put it in the slot and turn on my pc, all I get is a neverending beep. My current card is a Geforce FX 5600XT agp and it still works fine, so is the card damaged or am I just missing something? Thanks.

What type of agp slot do you have,

There are 1, 2, 3, 4, if you stick a agp4 card in a agp 3 slot it will not work.

Post the brands and models of the card, and the brand and model of you motherboard, or computer if it is a pre-fab.

Im pretty sure the 6800GS requires you to plug in a power cord from your power supply into it. Without it, it will just not work.

A long beep on bootup means your motherboard can't find a video card, and it's just letting you know that your monitor isn't showing anything for that reason and not general computer failure. =)

    1. Make sure your card is plugged in. There should be a 4-pin connector on it. However, I failed to plug in my new 7800 GT, and it still worked, it just wasn't very fast, so your problem might be different.

    2. Do motherboards come with more than one AGP slot? I've never seen such a thing. PCI-Express, yes, but that's because you can put two cards together in an SLI configuration. I didn't think you could do that with AGP. o_O

I agree with kernelpops, post the actual card and motherboard, and maybe we'll find something.

I hate to sound like a dork, but how would one find out what kind of motherboard one has, what type of slots (agp or pci), and what type of new vid card one should buy.

I have a 4-year-old Gateway with just some generic, basic 16mb vid card, and would like to upgrade to a 128 or 256 if possible, rather than buy a new computer.

    So, uh...how? :dunce:

Download something like Sandra or PCWizard to check your hardware setup if you don't know.

Plenty of similar software around but those two I have tried and find good.

I think that makes you sound like not a dork.
But to actually sound like a dork, there's probably a snow-ball's chance in hell that you'll find a 128 or 256 video card to work for your computer.
