Just curious, is there a secret way to aim those damn things or is it 100% random?

They do have some amount of area of effect so your aim doesn't have to be perfect. You could always move close to your targets.
The Tornadoes' path is random, but still predictable. After you get used to them, they should become easier to aim. The closer you are to your target, the easier it is to hit them.
Aim your tornado's behind your target with shift click. If the path it takes isn't good, slightly change your cursors place and click and hold again. Once you've got a good path generated, don't move your mouse and all the tornados will travel the same path and hopefully cause maximum destruction among monsters.
