General courtesy is different from a percieved idea of GM/BM. General courtesy has nothing at all to do with dueling, because you're in a virtual world, there is no real consequences to any action you take, and thus, if you want to be a jerk, no one can stop you. No one can stop you from calling people names either(at least, most names :wink3: ). There are no consequences for calling random people names walking down the street, but most of us don't do that just because we can.
You're correct - except in the last bit. Most of us don't do that because there would be the potential for immediate, direct, REAL WORLD consequences.
In Diablo 2, there are no such consequences. Worst that can happen is someone says things back to you, or you drop an ear, of which you seem to have a ready supply.
Um, dude, I don't know where you live but in most towns you cant just yell insults at people on the street. People are a lot more aggressive and intolerant of that kind kind of thing than you might think. They WILL hit you, or worse. People have been shot for giving someone else the finger in a traffic jam. The consequences of random name calling can and will be quite painful unless you only do it with people who are frailer and less powerful than you. This is precisely the reason that many people are cruel or mean in diablo- they want to act out and they don't have an outlet for it in their life. When a lvl 95 LoH clan member joins a pubby, kills everyone and then insults them (if you can call it insulting, who really cares if someone else thinks theyre a "Noob") its their way of feeling powerful. They feel more powerful when people talk back to them, because they have the impression that they are actually making people upset. This is why the most common response to "dont nk me you dick!" is "cry?" It enhances the feeling of power for these people when they think of the other players frustrantion and powerlessness. Its interesting to note that when a skilled dueler fights an LoH member (sorry to single yall out if you read this) they generally get a lot more respect because they aren't weak enough to be a good target for bullying.
Really, just think of a 3rd grade bully and youll get the idea. The difference is, there are no teachers or older kids in diablo to stop the bully.
@HappyAssassin: Yeah, quite exactly. Mannered duels are mannered, no matter whether you lose or win. Internet or not, noone gives you the right to insult people. I dunno, maybe somewhere it's normal, but I've grown up in a medium where bad-put words' consequenses were felt with physical receptors almost immediately.
There's been a strange twist of logic here in this thread. This twist lies in "if its available and not forbidden by EULA, use it" statement. Well, what about Wizzy gloves? Generating hacked items is a violation of the EULA, but what about using them? Nothing forbids that. If you play a random mf run, and somehow find a hellfire torch ring, will you use it in duels? Quite obviously, you will, because bla bla bla GM is a myth and bla bla bla your opponent may use it and you need to best him. Imo, such approach will ruin diablo ultimately. Because, in fact, nothing can forbid you to trade for a bugged/hacked item. Ladder runewords were REVEALED, not found in the game files, meaning you can't possibly know whether something is bugged or intended, so noone can punish ya. This can all go very far, cuz its hard to argue that duellers and only them create a demand on such items and pay hundreds of bucks for them on eBay, thus, inspiring hackers, who, on their turn, crash servers and provoke CI's trying hard to make such items again, because there is a demand. A demand created by BM duellers and the "we need no rules" approach they follow. Now I'm not trying to accuse BM duellers of everything, MOST people, I hope, would stay away from hacked items and such, but that's where this approach leads.
That philosophy, in fact, is just a lack of any philosophy. IMO, of course.
And one last question. Would you use bone prison against a shapeshift build? Just interested.
I was not talking about hacked items but third part programs, does any1 here ever dueled a char with A/A? or in Godmode? Isnt thas BM duels?
And again about the spoken language, I could understand some senteneces from someone who never went to school, but hey, we all here know what all this is about, they talk trash just to annoy people, you dont need a button on keyboard with electric shock everytime you type a bad word to understand you shouldnt say so, you cannot say there is no rule coze you cant be punished as if you were in RL, or are we all monkeys in a lab?
There is a clear line separating GM duels from BM, and you dont have to think so deep to admit it.
the bm and gm thing is so fragile, i mean everyone has different definitions and in a public game some people go there to challenge the gm bm stance. if you think gm is so important dont duel pubby. private games is the only way for the gm players or accept others will not play this game the way you want it played.
personally i enjoy a good nk pk lame game once in a while.....
I think on this thread we are not complaining about BM people, since as you say, take it or leave it. Actually, we are discussing if there is such BM and GM thing.
