You painted a door that was missing?

That is a nice trick indeed.

    Otherwise, trust a good bodyshop.

Plus I didn't know insurance covered this kinda stuff.

EDIT: After reading what I initially posted I realized I just contradicted myself. The scratch isn't as bad as I initially posted after taking another look at it. A twizzler sized section of the car will still need to be repainted but maybe the rest can be buffed out since there was no actual loss of paint *crosses fingers*
The size of the scratch doesn't make much of a difference. If it's bad enough that it needs to be painted, it'll cost you the same whether it's 1/4 inch or an inch thick. They don't just fill in the missing paint. They sand it down, primer it and use several coats of paint. It wouldn't surprise me if they paint the entire trunk and blend it into the fenders.

But yeah, insurance will cover it. Your mom undoubtedly has full coverage on a new car. The deductible is probably about $500. Get a few estimates and only report it to the insurance if they'd cover over half of it. Otherwise, it's not worth risking the increased premiums.

And if you don't know of a good body shop, call the local Honda dealer and talk to the service department. Tell him your insurance needs 3 estimates and ask for recommendations.

They may, but they may also kick up your monthly rates a boatload if you try to get them to pay for it.

Unfortunately we don't have full insurance on the vehicle...liability only. I think we have the problem fixed though. The last time my parents painted over a scratch of similar size they did a pretty good job considering and you can barely notice where they painted unless you look really close at the spot. They might just try painting over this scratch just to save time/money. Chances are no one will notice this one either.

they didn't get full coverage on an '06? that's pretty much unheard of. they must have bought it straight out. they wouldn't get a loan without full coverage. if it were my car, i'd have a body shop fix it properly. but i guess you have nothing to lose trying to fix it yourself. if it looks like crap, you can just take it in and have a shop do it right.

Ya my parents bought the car straight out, no loans or anything like that just wrote them a check. They never get loans/borrow money for anything except for our house. They are very very careful with our finance and they always buy/own everything if they can.

You can get a paint touch-up kit at Napa and do it yourself. It won't be as good as a professional job but if you take your time it'll pass muster.

On a scratch half an inch wide and 6 inches long? I seriously doubt that it will blend.

Edit: Oh, and your parent's care with finances seems to be called in to question with their choice to not go with full coverage.

All it has to do is not draw undue attention to itself. After a while they can save up the money to get it repainted.

You can save a lot of money if you sand the area yourself before taking it in. Just make sure you know what you're doing first. Otherwise you wind up costing yourself a lot more money.
