So I messed up today and completely scratched up the rear of my mom's brand new car. I didn't park it far enough in the garage and when I closed the door the back trunk of the car got scratched to hell. So now a roughly 6 square inch of the trunk needs to be repainted.
The car is a 2006 Accord EX Coupe Candy Apple Red. Is there any way I can just go to a Pep Boys or something and match the paint and paint it myself or do I have to take it into a shop. My mom says that even if you match the paint it won't come out right and won't match the original color of the car.
I've always been under the impression that if a large portion is damaged, then you have to re-paint the whole car.
First, that is SO wrong. A good body shop can fix it right.Originally Posted by 5Ws
Rius, take it to a few shops and get estimates. They can fix it up without much hassle.
This is not a big deal.
Meh, shows how much I know...Originally Posted by Amra

That is a nice trick indeed.
Otherwise, trust a good bodyshop.![]()
No, you can't paint it yourself. Take it to a reputable body shop and have them paint it. They'll paint the section that's scratched and blend it into the original paint. It shouldn't be noticeable to the eye. But it'll likely cost $600-$1,000. That's what insurance is for.
Jesus 600-1000 bucks? I'm talking just a small scratch here about the width of single strand of twizzler (you know after you unwrap one) and about 4-5 inches in length. The rest of the area that was damaged might not need paint tho...since no paint was actually scratched off. Might be able to buff the rest out.Originally Posted by FreezerBurn
Plus I didn't know insurance covered this kinda stuff.
EDIT: After reading what I initially posted I realized I just contradicted myself. The scratch isn't as bad as I initially posted after taking another look at it. A twizzler sized section of the car will still need to be repainted but maybe the rest can be buffed out since there was no actual loss of paint *crosses fingers*
I personally would've never thought to use Twizzler as a comparison to something like a car scratch.
I had to think extra hard about a good comparison. I figure every here knows what a twizzler is and has unwrap one of those larger twizzler strands into the smaller strands that make up the larger strand.Originally Posted by 5Ws
