The poor have more children and they have them earlier in life meaning a shorter generation span and faster spread of genes.

The rich however have a better pick of who to have children with.

I think you missed the point. People who are born rich are not subject to economic selective pressure because their wealth is essentially idiot-proof. It takes special effort for a rich person to become poor. Therefore there is a subset of society for which survival of the fittest does not apply, indeed that section which survives most effectively.
