Yup
Nope
Hey Moosashi, I just realised that you haven't Christmasified your FSM avatar yet.
Primarily an American first. Probably a big part of it is because there is such a long history of being one nation.
Ironically enough, I've found my New Jersey identity becoming much stronger now that I'm living out of state, because I get "You're fron New Jersey? OMG so many smokestacks/highways/suckage" so often that it's getting annoying.
National/state loyalty really got reversed after the Civil War. I'd say the majority of americans feel more American that State-ians
American primarily. Has something to do with my being in a furrin country, though, since that blue passport is a primary tool for identifying myself. I have a California driver's license but that doesn't count for much over here.
I was born in CA and went to university there, but I also lived in OR for about 14 years. So in my case it's American first, West Coaster second. After that comes the People's Republic of Berkeley, probably. :teeth:
I'm too much of a mutt to have any ethnic allegiance. If you go back three generations I'm a quarter Swedish, and I've been to Sweden a couple times, but it isn't the motherland or anything.
Oh noos. How do you do it?Originally Posted by dondrei

American 1st, then North Carolinian, and finally hometown, which is Wilmington.
Being part Cherokee and having my ancestors living in NC even before all those illegal migrant workers showed up in the Mayflower, I identify mostly with my home state. Though, 500 or so years ago it was a lot bigger.
edit: I put American 1st, even though I identify mostly with my home state, mainly because the other 49 states don't count. So, North Carolina, America and Cherokee, basically are one and the same.
america first because my state includes northern CA, so I always say southern CA of course
Best I could do:Originally Posted by Moosashi

I expected almost everyone to go for American only, perhaps because the impression we get over here is of a united, single country and the states (with the exception of the more famous ones like Texas, NY, Florida etc.) don't seem to have separate international identities.
In the U.K each country (with the exception of England) has its own clear separate cultural identity and there is very little unity between all four of our countries (despite appearances). England and Wales are the only two left that are seemingly united and even that is beginning to change with the increasing powers of the devolved legislature in Wales.
Yeah, truth hurts... :clap:Originally Posted by publius
