What to make in a 4os eth archon 1017 def?

Did you make use of the eth socket bug to get that armor to have a defense of 1017? I don't think a simple ethereal Archon Plate would be anywhere near that high unless you used that bug.

make stone use it yourself till the durability is around 5 then give it to your merc

Well, I'm looking at Stone, and it doesn't seem very appealing, the only good thing being it has the high enhance defense. I'm looking at Fort, and it seems very appealing, but it also needs a Lo rune... Dilemma... I guess it's time to search for a legit Lo rune.

Stone also has 60% FHR, meaning your merc will almost never go into hit recovery. Coupled with the huge defense, this will make your merc last very long.
