    question about Enhanced Damage jewels

    If I socket these in a shield, helm, or armor, will I still add the appropriate percentage to my damage? Does this apply only to weapon damage, or also elemental attacks like say, a fireball?

    Well, fancy meeting you here...

    My understanding is that ED jewels will add to the base physical damage of your weapon no matter where they are socketed. However, there is a bug that I don't fully understand, with ED/min and ED/max jewels when placed off weapon. Something like the ED% is only added to the opposite of where the hard points from the jewel are added, making it a +40%min/+10max. Search ED/min and bug to be sure (most just say don't put'em off weapon).

    ED jewels will only up the physical damage from weapons.

    They don't work the same in non-weapon sockets, but they do still work.

    Weapon damage is more or less organised like this.
    Base weapon damage
    Add on-weapon %ed bonus
    Add on-weapon +min/max (this is what is shown on your weapon in the game)
    Add off-weapon +min/max
    Add off-weapon %ed bonus, which is the sum of all of these:
    * off-weapon %ed
    * skill %ed
    * aura %ed
    * str/dex %ed
    * %ed vs demons/undead

    The char screen lists the final damage, although it doesn't count %ed vs undead/demons because that only counts when you are hitting one of those types.

    %ed usually has a much bigger effect when put in a weapon as it is applied as a factor by itself and not just as a small part of a much bigger factor.

    It only affects physical damage.

    The bug that Spud mentions does exist, although it doesn't directly impact your question. Indeed you should be careful with ed/min and ed/max jewels off-weapon.

    Thanks. I'll probably just stick with weapon sockets for ED jewels then.

    Followup question - if a weapon already has ED% built in (just for example, let's say it's a base 100 damage with +200% = 300 damage), does the jewel just increase this (to +240% = 340 damage), or does it multiply the weapon's inherent damage by the socketed +40% (300 damage +40% = 420) ?

    At the risk of being corrected yet again by Thrugg...

    The different on weapon ED% are all added together and then the base is modified. Then on weapon +min/max are added, etc., as (s)he posted above. So your answer is that a 200%ED weapon with a 40% ED jewel will do 240% ED.

    I'm pretty sure that not all of that gets multiplied with each other. I remember guite well that in my newbie times I put a 40%ed jewel into my barb's shaftstop (being the only off-weapon %ed IIRC) and the damage didn't went up be 40% as it should have been if your equation is correct. In fact, it added very little to the damage.

    IIRC, the sum of %ed from str/dex, skills, off-weapon bonuses and any %ed to demons+undead gets multiplied. I'm not sure about aura bonuses - they might get multiplied seperately.

    The damage equation:

    Physical Damage = (BD * ( 1 + EDW) + min/max) * ( 1 + stat/100 + EDA + EDS)

    BD: Your weapon's base damage
    EDW: Enhanced Damage on your weapon
    min/max: +min/max damage from all sources - if you want your average damage, divide by 2
    stat: The relevant stat. Dex for bows, str for most melee, (str+dex) * 0.75 for daggers and thrown, 1.1 * str for hammer.
    EDA: Enhanced Damage elsewhere (NOT on your weapon)
    EDA: Enhanced Damage from skill

    Extra damage against undead/demons is exactly like normal ED, except it only works against the appropriate type of monster.

    That's what I meant, but %ed to demons/undead is not like normal %ed. No matter if it's on a weapon or not, it's always added to EDA.
