Finally! Tonight Fer killed Hell Baal and achived patdom!
For those who don't know, a Fire Templar is a paladin who uses Fist of the Heavens as a form of attack (the templar part) and Fireball granted from 2 pieces of the Trang Ouls Set partial bonus.
This build is uber-twinked and works greatly. I died twice, and both times were due to my carelessness...ess. That means that it is completely viable in HC (more below)
I posted a lot of his adventures in the dailies, as they were fresh in my memory. Go read them if you want to get deeper.
Fer
level 81 Paladin
20 Fist of the Heavens
13 Holy Bolt (where the remaining points shall go)
1 all other combat skills (8 total)
20 Conviction <- to get 25 for fireball
20 Holy Shock <- best skill for beating normal and half NM
1 Pre reqs (5 total)
1 every non-resist def auras (6 total)
Redemption is a life, time and potion saver!
Cleansing is great!
Equipment:
Ptopaz Shako
Mara's
Ormus Robes (Fireball 11F/14L) - it works! - with empty socket (me poor!)
Trang Ouls belt and gloves
Waterwalk (didn't think of a better option for his boots, so decided to save on dex)
SoJ
Rare ring (10% FCR, Level 5 Firebolt charges, more useless stuff) - this one was gambled and it is a huge finding, because added to the 20% from TO gloves and the 20% from Ormus, I could break the 48% FCR breakpoint (11-frame castings, yay)
1 pally combat charm, resists, life, mana charms.
Fireball Mode: (total level: 26)
Moonfall
4-socketed pally shield with 2 facets and 2 PDiamonds for +7/-9/79% res all
around 1100~1200 damage, not counting conviction.
FotH Mode: (total level: 35)
Hand of Blessed Light
PDiamond HoZ
around 4600 lightning damage, 2200 bolt damage. Conviction would kick in for boosting lightning damage here, too.
Merc, as usual, Gaze/Shaft and Eth Reapers
Early stages in a paragraph:
Zeal + Holy Shock all the way to NM act 3, then FotH + zeal when mana was out. Then Fireball. Got to Hell on level 70. Really easy all the way. Died once from fire enchanted (non-bug, really, just plain careless) on late NM and once when I tried to run Sewers act 2. It was a short run from WP to the stairs... only that time it was cluttered with horrible fiends! I said, 'just run through, easy' and they said 'BLAHAAARGH' and I was dead just like that. As you see, totally avoidable, and HC-feasible.
The final fights:
The Ancients
So I got there, and got prepared, Holy Freeze on (to slow them and catch any FE before they work their 'miracle'), a finger in TP scroll, another in Conviction. So it went, a couple of re-rolls, then first try. Merc pwnd. Life drops quickly. TP. Second try, the same. third, the same. 4th, I couldn't believe, great mods, that was it! Then pressed te wrong button, and yet another reroll. Pwned, pwned, gave up, and went shopping for craft material. Then went to kill Pindle. Then I went to dinner. When I came back, what the heck? a last try before some MFing, or twinking to improve FotH. No FE. No Merc pwnd. FotH was taking away heaps of the leap guy's life. And then he is history. Then the whirlie is gone. Madawc was LI so eat fire, you throwing freak! I MADE IT! And not one purple gone at this!
WSK
Level 1 - Pain!
Level 2 - easy cake - gloams are manageable, thanks to their low life, and being undead!
Level 3 - still easier, no OK.
Level 4 - You gotta be kidding me? Vampires, undead dolls, sirens, no OK, no gloams, no mummies resurrecting, no frenzitaurs!
Minions
No LI? Really?! BWAHAHA!!! (maybe somebody was LI, but it was either undead or too low-life. That is the problem of playing with Conviction, you never know immunities at once!) Merc died once (or was it twice?), Lister and his gang were surely tough, but a 1by1 tactics got rid of them all.
Baal
Now that is the best part! First, being a noob and a slacker, used to the easy not-have-to-aim-properly-to-hit playstyle, I failed to keep a close eye on the freak, and ended up killing 2 clones, one almost full-life! Then, that crappy mana burn stuff! Merc was taking an awful beating, but those tentacles are heavily leechable, so he was barely making it. My potions were going quickly, though, and between killing clones, and stuff, my belt went empty, so back to town to refill. Then the mana potions were gone quickly, and the life was doing fine, so I put on Meditation, recovering life at slow pace and mana really quick, just enough to make the blows on Baals head without worrying about mana. Ingenious, really! I managed to resist the devil's attacks really fine, so it was a click, keep clicked, drink a red every once in a while, and wait. It was teh safest evah! And a sea of yellow crap from him!
As I usually do, I will now go and slay Nihlatak to earn a name on an item of his. It should have been a Dragonscale, but I couldn't get it in time. So a Fer's Moonfall it will be.
I heavily recommend it, one of the best chars I ever played with. It is different from all I saw, and TONS of fun. And, hmm, maybe a Pindle runner? He can surely spread some havoc among undeads!
Thanks for reading it through, it was quite long!
Cheers!
Nice build, rather uncommon one too.
Maybe I will do one after my 1135468412368751 D2 ideas.
Congrats on the Pat!
Love to see uncommon builds like this do well. Great job, ric!

Yes, quite an interesting build indeed. Congrats on making him a Pat, ric!

Congrats! I could never convince myself to make one of those whacky builds.
Solid and interesting build... nice to see a diversion to the regular cookie cutters.![]()
Thanks for all cheers!
Forgot to add, Life was 1200ish, mana 470ish, with 75ish stat points remaining. After the Ancients initial fiasco, dumped all but 20 into Vit, raising life to near 1500. Bummer, I wish i had more mana to cast more fireballs without depleting mana. Those 20, though, are destined to make 75% blocking with Dragonscale.
I am also wondering about PvP viability - FotH is powerful stuff!
Congrats! Very interesting build. I don't know if I approve of Paladin's using Fireballs, but in a world where a Barbarian can turn into a bear, I guess anything goes.

Congratulations!
Question, though: according to the Arreat Summit, FotH ignores the resistances of demons and undead. Does that also mean it ignores the NEGATIVE resistances bestowed upon them by Conviction?
