Help – how do I kill Hell Ancients with my level 83 Paladin? Tried twice so far 1st time Torlic got me in around 2 seconds and the 2nd time I don't know who killed me (I was too busy drinking full Rejuvs whilst swinging at Korlic) I think I lasted 5-10 seconds – I have no idea what mods they had (save that I wasn't aware of any aura's). 2nd time I managed to maybe take 5% off of Korlic's life.
Each hit seemed to be doing around 900-1000 damage to me! I had seeded the plateau with additional full Rejuvs - but it just didn't look vagualy doable -the rate I was getting hit was incredible (I was using Holy Freeze as I think Korlic is immune to lightning).
Paladin – had an 83rd level defiance Merc.
Paladin skills:
20 Holy Freeze
20 Holy Shock
20 Resist Lightning
20 Resist Cold
1 Resist All
1 Zeal
1 Holy Shield
plus pre-reqs.
Plus 2 from items to all and plus an additional 2 to Offensive Aura's from amulet
I have 3 or 4 points saved.
Stats are 30 ish points saved
Str 133
Dex 100 and something (enough for blocking)
Vit the rest
Resists 90/95/94/90. Life around 1050-1100. Blocking with Holy Shield is 75%. FHR 6 frames.
Equipment:
"Black" Tyrant Club (I think this is best weapon I have because of the crushing blow - I do have some other stuff available but nothing outstanding) with Flying axe and ancients pledge Paladin shield on switch with life tap (didn't have time to use the switch!)
Circlet plus 25% resist all and mana boost (never found anything better)
Rhyme Paladin shield
Safety Amulet (plus 2 offensive aura's, mana steal and blocking)
Guardian Angel (with "Um")
Stone of Jordon
Dwarfstar
Blood belt (10% open wounds, plus life resists etc)
Tearhaunch boots
Merc has:
Ethereal Shaftstop
Rare Mancatcher (big(?) damage and life steal) – I do have the exceptional polearm/spear with 75% slow I could swap in).
Circlet with plus resist all.
Resistances are on or very near 75%.
If anyone has any tips - I'd be grateful. Is it just a question of levelling some more (my understanding is that if there is a big level difference they get a big plus to hit me)? If so what level is recomended?
Thanks.
day
First of all remember to type players 1, unless you're already playing on p1. Secondly, if the Ancients spawn with FE you have no chances of surviving. If they spawn with FE reroll them quickly.
I can't say much about the tactics though.
Thanks for the reply - it was players 1.
I will look outfor FE but to be honest was dead before I could get a read. However, I don't think it was FE that got me (my understanding is FE would have been 1 hit dead as opposed to 900 ish damage 2 hits dead).
Try putting the Kelpie Snare on your mercenary.
Swap the circlet for Gulliame (sp) Face and what is your gloves?
If possible, craft a pair of blood gloves. Crushing blow gets the Ancients' life down pretty quickly for me.
Also try not to fight them when they spawn horrible mods other than FE, like Extra Strong, Cursed, Extra fast.
Like frosty suggested, Guillaume's Face would be good. I used Goblin Toe in tandem with Guillaume's Face for Crushing Blow, but I was lucky enough to find a Baranar's Star for my weapon. If you have anything like that or any really good weapon, use it, and get your Crushing Blow from other sources. Also % Damage reduction is a BIG help, as is a lot of life leech, so using a String of Ears would be a big bonus as it has both. Shaftstop would be a good addition as well. SoJ isn't as useful for a Paladin as a spellcaster, IMO, so I would swap it out with a life leech ring, even something as basic as Cathan's Seal would work. Of course, when I did it it was v1.09 so they were easier, but the basic concepts would still apply, I would think.
BTW, what is your main attack skill? I see Holy Shock and Holy Freeze, do those give synergies of some sort to another attack skill? Or are you using Zeal as your attack skill? If that's the case, Black, or really any weapon with Knockback, would be more of a pain than a help IMO.

1) no FE... FE bad, but you knew that already.
2) crushing blow good... i would definitely get yourself a CB set-up for going against the ancients... especially with Zeal you'll kill them in no time. Guillame's Face is a good helm, Goreriders are good boots, and Black is a pretty good runeword for it - just make sure that you have enough IAS to hit a good attack rate with Zeal. putting a Hone Sundan on your merc is also good.
3) don't try to tank them all at once. the ancients are fast and they hit hard. if you try to tank all three you will be dead very quickly. run laps around the area and try to get in a situation where you are only facing one of them, then smack him a few times with Zeal. hopefully the CB will make this an effective tactic since on players 1 one hit can take away half of his life. rinse and repeat until they are all dead.
I'm a bit poor for gear.
Frosty and Wpolfgang thanks I don't have Guillame's face or Gore riders. My Gloves are Laying of Hands (and I think the ancients are demons so thats better than nothing?) nor SOE's but see I'm on the right track with crushing blow (with the Black in the Club).
I have some crafted blood gloves (which are not much good but would add to crushing blow a bit) - I would lose the fire resistance and attack aspeed from Laying of hands but could be worth it? Have to run the speed calculator!
Wolfgang I am using zeal to deliver elemental damage (didn't like the Knockback either but see above!). The idea is to switch aura when I run up against an immune - its worked well so far (e.g. I think Korlic is lightning immune).
My_Immotal 6 - thanks I'll give the Kelpae Snare a go.
Whomehead - also thanks - don't have a Hone Sudan - but particulalry thanks on the don't tank (which its what I was trying) - I will try hit and run.
Thanks again.
how much dmg are you dealing? a base zeal won't give much EDmg or AR for you to survive the ancient with melee. those auras alone are not enough.
Get a phase blade with 6 Eths. Otherwise you'll be swinging at 5% chance to hit for the rest of your life. Imo, it's not the auras' damage that is lacking, I assume you're just not hitting them.
