i've been considering new builds to try and think this might work:
20 fire wall
20 static field
1 cold mastery
1 lit mastery ?
20 fire mastery
1 in all pre-req's
this would be 92 skill points.
i havn't seen any tri-mentalists in 1.1, but i think this would work. i've heard that FO can still be good without synergies, plus firewall and static field don't have synergies, so it's not like they could be doing more damage.
if you could get +13 to all skills, you're getting 9000 fire damage per second, 24 yard static, and 461 min cold damage on fo. according to a calculator i used.
Yes it is a viable build, my first sorc in 1.10 was like your build.
This is my favorite pre-1.10 build.
Unfortunately, 1.10 reduced greatly her killing power. You need good gear to play with her (shako, occy, vipermagi, lidless ... usual stuff).
Frozen orb with static field will just own everything in nightmare and will do pretty good in hell. Trust me, it is an insane screen killing combo, until you meet cold or lightning immune. Left clic FO and right clic static ... So you just static - FO - static stactic - FO.
And firewall ... well ... you need a merc to tank so the enemies will not move. This skill is hard to master and most enemies will just run thru your firewall do receive pathetic damage. Again you must use static field a lot while you wait for the 2.4 (?) second cooldown. So that why I must disagree with you Miladys, this build has a no timered spell : static field.
You have not seen any? Oh i went unnoticed and some others more!
Look into the Sorceress Guide Library thread. There are 2 threads there dealing with Archmages or Tri-Elementalists as you say.
I think the debate is a bit devided as if an Archmage build using Static Field as their main Lightning attack is indeed an Archmage build, since Static Field can't kill, but most (and finally me too.....) have come to the conclusion that a spell that can drain all monsters on screen and outside of the screen to half of their life in Hell can indeed be counted into the Archmage class, though certainly not a low-lvl static field.
More on the topic: Firewall/SF/FO is certainly viable. With any Archmage build you will notice though that your damage will be lower and your killing speed lower in games that are 4player to 8player. Below that your are the killing machine, combining a couple of spells.
Look into the Sorceress guide library for more suggestions.
Tal's set goes among the favorite gear for Archmage builds, since it adds damage output nicely to all trees. Combination with some other +skill gear and skillers, facets is recommended.
My favorite Matriarch Archmage build:
Meteor, CB, FO
This build actually also uses Fireball besides CB for spamming attacks, since Meteor synergies Fireball nicely.
And firewall ... well ... you need a merc to tank so the enemies will not move. This skill is hard to master and most enemies will just run thru your firewall do receive pathetic damage.
The trick for firewall is to cast it at a 90 degree angle to your self in relation to the monster you wish to kill and then step over into it. The monster will be in your firewall the entire time it is closing on you and will take even more damage if your merc is a holy freeze merc or you slow it down with a cold spell first. Except for the stepping into it this is an old D1 firewall trick. Also if you use max block you can tank, drop the firewall on the monster, and drink reds while the monsters stand in the firewall.

Static field is NOT a timered spell it is non-timered and benefits from faster cast rate. The problem with static field is that you can't KILL anything with it. It can only take a monsters health down to 1/2 and then is no further use for damage. I'm not saying at all that it isn't worth it, just that this is the limitation. In 1.08 when I played this build I would cast orb first to chill and slow the monster, cast the firewall at 90 degrees and then static. It worked well untill hell diff at which time it slowed significantly due to monsters with immunities.
In a slightly different build I maxed glacial spike instead of frozen orb (to increase the freeze length) and this solved the monsters moving out of the fire wall problem. Glacial spike them to stop them in their tracks, drop firewall on them, then continue to spike until the firewall runs out or they are dead. They don't move, they didn't hit you, and you owned them. Again the problem was hell diff.
Hmm, i can see the problem in Hell with this build, but other Archmage builds can do fine in Hell, unless they decide to run 8p games on their own. THen the killing will be real slow.
The actual way to handle an Archmage is to actually use all spells you have to your advantage and also combine them. This way you can do alot of damage since you practically always have to spells which you can deal damage with.
Just one thing alot of people dont see.
Yes the 90o firewall trick works well until you meet a group of fast monster and there is a lot in hell. Never worked for me. I am not telling that it wont work though. But its really a nice spell to use if you play with barb, pally ...
Holy freeze merc is a nice idea.
Use max block to tank is a bad idea in my opinion sorcs should never be close to enemies.
And about the static field yes I know it is a non-timered spell that what I said. I get your point, with static field you can't kill monsters so it's not really usefull when monsters are under 1/2 life as would be a killing spell such as lightning. But I see static field as a non-timered support spell that why I said I disagree with you.
Glacial spike and Firewall was a great build. But now because of the immunes it's just too weak ...sad :(
With this build your main "killing spell" is static field use it with FO and FW all the time. Of course you can't kill monsters with SF but your FO and FW are just too much slow killers to do the job alone. In 3 words : Static like hell !
It's nice to meet people who use the FO/FW/SF build
