You know the biggest problems you guys are having with SP2? You are installing it. I have removed all updates Windows ever tried to give me and my system runs smoothly. The only times I ever started to have troubles with Windows XP is when I started installing the auto-updates and recommended updates. I took out what I had and have yet to have another problem.
Pick and choose what you want. The only updates I have from that list are the DirectX and Internet Explorer ones.
Is he running OS9? I don't know of any 'bombs' on OS X. You can't really compare OS9 or XP, XP is much newer.Originally Posted by BartXeno

I don't recall the last time this computer was shut down and I have zero problems with it. I don't install critical updates, in fact, this is the load I put on the computer when xp first came out. I have no viruses, in fact, I can't think of any real problems I've ever had with it.
It's a 733 that I bought when 733's were considered fast.
Yup...been a while.
Yeah, I believe it probably was running OS9, at any rate I forgot when he upgraded he switched to a PC compatible earlier this year. We don't hang out much since he's been taking classes and working like crazy. I was at his apartment around Christmas last year and he was complaining about the error messages that have the bomb icon that made him have to reboot and I remember those things bugging me when I used Apples far more often than BSoDs on PCs. The crash message that bugged me least was the "Guru Meditation Error" on Amigas because it was at least amusing.Originally Posted by {KOW}Spazed
My point still is, unless you abuse it XP is plenty stable and an open architecture machine costs less. I've used different OSes and am happy with XP. Partly because of familiarity I suppose, but years ago when I used Apples more I found them more cumbersome to use and hated the limited hardware options. They're much better now (hey, I can have more than one mouse button! What, I have more than a couple of video cards I can use?) and I always liked that the architecture was well designed for graphics/multimedia work (same reason I liked Amiga and even Commodore 64 back in the day) but they held the reigns too tight for too long to win me over as a customer - because they stayed out of my price range and less software was available along with some of the GUI elements I never fully took a liking to.
Not wanting to stir up the unwinnable PC vs Apple war. I think both are good and it's nice to have a choice. I just wanted to point out that XP is actually a pretty darned stable OS.
Well, after a night of cursing and trying to get the removal tool to work I gave up. I called my bro, he said he'd be over in the morning with his PC and his crossover cable and we'd figure it out then.
I boot my PC up this morning and let it sit there for about an hour, after that my desktop FINALLY came up, i couldn't do very much on it because it was crazy unstable, but i could work it enough so I could x-fer files to his PC via the crossover cable (insanelly cool cable btw).
Got all my files over, wiped the disk clean, reinstalled windows/drivers and all that. Now things seem to be in working order. Although for me to get access to my USB 2.0 ports, it's telling me i need to d/l Service Pack 1. Which im in the process of getting worked out.
After i called my bro last night, he told me the IT guy for his company called and told him NOT to install Service Pack 2 because it's really buggy and it's been messing up a lot of computers. I guess i called him a little bit too late =/.
Seems pretty pathetic to me that they'd release a service pack that renders your computer basically unusable. But I guess I shouldn't expect much more from Microsoft.
CNN posted this article about spyware and SP2.
Spyware Story
Don't know if it is the problem, but it seems to share some similarities with the problems you have been having.
Good luck.
