    First:
    At ilvls 1-30, there's a 40% chance of 1 affix and a 20% chance each of 2, 3 or 4 affixes.
    At ilvls 31-50, there's a 60% chance of 2 affixes and a 20% chance each of 3 or 4 affixes.
    At ilvls 51-70, there's an 80% chance of 3 affixes and a 20% chance of 4 affixes.
    At ilvls 71+, there's a 100% chance of 4 affixes.

    Second:
    ilvl = int(.5 * clvl) + int(.5 * ilvl)

    So if you pull all your items from The Pits,then the int(ilvl) = 85. You want a final ilvl = 71+ to get 4 affixes. Now do the math.

    71 = int(.5*clvl) + (.5*85)
    28.5 = .5*clvl
    57 = clvl

    For lower ilvl items you need a higher clvl. Or a simple answer to the question is when you can do hell pit runs, then you are ready to craft.

    Capn_F, those little "int" symbols aren't just there for fun They mean take the integer part.
    int (.5*85) = 42, not 42.5.
    You need to be clvl 58 to get ilvl 71 craft from an ilvl 85 ingredient.

    That said, your advice is good (items from the Pit crafted by any char that can run there).

    The question is really a bit too big to answer simply in a forum post though. What is "decent"? A clvl 20 char can craft items that are good enough for a clvl 20 char to use. If you are seeking a particular mod or combination of mods, I can tell you how to get them. But I can't tell you how to get something you think is good unless you tell me what you think is good.

    The most popular crafting item seems to be Caster Amulet recipe, and the most sought-after mod is +2 class skills. To obtain one by crafting a gambled amulet, you need to have at least clvl 88. The following lists the chance that a gambled amulet will be eligible for getting +2 class skills as a function of clvl:
    87-: 0%
    88: 10%
    89: 20%
    90: 50%
    91: 60%
    92: 90%
    93+: 100%

    +2 skills is mandatory, but the main reason to craft caster amulets at all is to get more than 10%fcr. Else you could as well gamble for the same amulet - although there are nice crafted amulets without additional 10%fcr, of course.

    I don't understand your math with respect to ensuring that +2 is possible, however. The more often you use an amulet for crafting, the more its ilvl advances to the crafter level until it reaches the crafter level (or your level-1 in certain circumstances). A safe way to still have a level 90 amulet even after previous craftings is to gamble for a +2 one (so you can be sure it's a L90+ one) and craft with a L90+ character.

    Crafted items cannot be used as crafting ingredients. All recipes for crafting call for a magical (blue) item.
