Tomorrow night a few of us want to try out some sake. I did some research online.. but knowing a few people that frequent here reside in Japan, and have drank plenty of it, i was wondering what a good, affordable, Sake would be. Twenty bucks at the most. There probably isn't going to be a good selection at the liquor store here, but.. bring on the suggestions.
Thanks.
If you are brave, try making a Black Samurai. It's 1 part soy sauce to 1.5-2 parts sake. Stir or swirl the glass before each swallow so the soy sauce doesn't settle to the bottom. Be sure you've eaten something beforehand, unless you want to feel like you've been kicked by a horse. (Trust me.) Enjoy!
wow.. wouldn't that just taste... nasty?
that would be my gut reaction...i like sake, and i like soy sauce...but i'm not sure they'd be good together..Originally Posted by cougar
If you are looking for good quality sake at a value in the 'States, there are some very good brands made by Japanese companies in California using California rice.
Some people don't like California rice because it's grown dry rather than in a paddy. Personally, I like the stuff.
I quite like Gekkaikan. Quality vs price it's a very good value, although it's not as dry as most varieties of sake, and so it doesn't quite kick you in the head like sake usually does.
Hopefully you have a proper Japanese supermarket somewhere near you. Don't be afraid to ask the store clerks.
Yah we actually got that kind tonight.. the liquor store only had Gekkeikan, and some Plum flavored Japanese whine (delicious, but not really sake) We got a bottle of each and had a good time.
One thing for sure.. if you heat the sake up, it really knocks you on your *** after awhile.
I'd like to try some more expensive stuff sometime tho and see what it's like.. since this bottle was only 7 bucks.
I like Gekkaikan because it doesn't kick you in the head like regular sake. You should try it sometime.Originally Posted by cougar
Glad you enjoyed yourself, tho'.
Oh, as long as we're talking about getting kicked in the head, another fun thing is shots of something called "prairie fire": tequila with Tabasco sauce.
The great thing is, i felt so worldly and noble while drinking my sake ;P Or maybe it was just the sake telling me that
I hope you and your friends remembered the rule that you should never pour your own sake. You can only pour for others, never yourself. I shoulda mentioned that earlier.Originally Posted by cougar
