Well, I watched my older brother do the rest of the game :P
One time he accidentally saved when he was totally surrounded in a stair trap. It was hilarious, and I think he had to petrify the enemies and hope for the best as soon as the game loaded.

Haha, that would really suck! You could just keep reloading it until you got it right though!

You really had to self police yourself on saves, was way too easy to abuse them and make the game not fun.

If D2 had that atmosphere, it would have been beyond amazing. I also think that the feeling of D1 was compounded by the fact that I was still a kid back then. Sadly, if I were to play it now, it would not be so creepy.

I have not played that game for several years now, this whole talk also makes me kinda want to play it. Though I don't have Hellfire, so I can get the complete D1 experience

Finished D1 with Hellfire several times and, while not necessary to have, it does add a more to D1, including another End Boss.

I did a play through of it about 6 months ago. It's still really great, but not being young and already knowing what's coming makes it far less scary.

I still find it semi creepy (mainly thanks to the music). Nothing beats original D1 music.
