Hi everyone,

Thought I would do a bit of a re-introduction to the forum since its been about 5 years since I was last on the forum (and I never was very active in the first place). Just coming back to D2 and so excited to begin. I have a bit of experience with the game and with ATMA (Never really got past A3 Nightmare, and have only ever played SP). I've decided to try out GoMule as it looks to have many more features so should be a bit of a learning curve again. I lurked around these forums for a couple of years before even joining (it used to be dii.net correct?). Now I hope to be more involved with the SP community as it looks like a great group of people, plus the amount of interesting stuff to learn about the game and how others play it is absolutely huge!

I'm about to start a Fishymancer - LOVE that build. Its fast if you want it to be but forgiving if you're in a lazy mood :) Props to NightFish, Im sure he has no idea how many people use his build as I did for my first planned character back in the day

So I hope to see you all around,
cheers

Okay, a few days ago I noticed there was another ARPG at the gates and it launched yesterday. I've played it for a few hours so far and it's looking pretty good. Good enough that I felt I might want to point out it's existence here. Before I launch into the review part of this post, let me point out one fact: The game is less than 15€ on steam. This does enter my considerations, but I'm of the opinion that a cheap turd is still a turd. And this is not a turd. I do not yet know how long the game takes to finish, but I already know that I will get my money's worth.

So, without further ado, let's take a look at: "The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing" (Which is a slightly silly name, I shall henceforth refer to thee as "Van Helsing". Also I am too lazy to type the full name).

Visuals
This is the first thing that piqued my interest in the game. It probably comes as no big surprise to anyone that I am usually the first guy to be like "I don't give a rat's behind about graphics". Which isn't quite true, what I am actually trying to say is that you're not going to impress me with Crysis <number here> graphics. What I care about in graphics is a coherent style, well crafted worlds and animations. And that doesn't mean silly ragdoll physics or motion capturing. I still like D2's graphics, and that has nothing to do with nostalgia tinted glasses. They are just plain good.

And Van Helsing get's that right. The world looks great. There are interesting things scattered around, character design steers well clear of the "uncanny valley", which is a problem I've encountered more and more in recent years. Less is more sometimes.

So far spell effects aren't obstructing my view either, which is always a plus. Torchlight and Path of Exile get this wrong (personal opinion).

Character Development
At first glance it might seem that there is not much to it, as there are no classes here, just one Van Helsing and that's pretty much it. But at second glance, I find that I don't mind, because there are several ways you can develop your guy.

Attributes
Van Helsing comes with 4 Attributes that you can put points to at level up.

Body - Max HP, Defense, Melee Oomph
Dexterity - Ranged Damage, Dodge
Willpower - Spell Damage, Max Mana
Luck - Gold Find, Magic Find, Critical Damage, Dodge

Skills
Van Helsing has three skill trees that he can put points into at level up as well, different pool than the attribute points.

Mystic Warrior - Melee & Spells (seem to be mostly close range)
Occult Hunter - Range & Spells (seem to be mostly longer range spells, am not using this, though)
Tricks and Auras - see below

The abilities of the first two trees also have little additions to them that you can purchase. Cleave's range can be increased, for example. Each ability also has 3 powerups that you can activate during combat to enhance or alter the skill.

Tricks and Auras actually needs a little more explaining. This is (obviously) two things in one. You can have two tricks and two auras equipped at the same time. Tricks are hotkeys to (a) and (s) by default, but this can be changed, auras are always active but you can pick which two you like. Tricks as well as auras can also be improved by skill points. You need to find someone to teach you these things, though, once you know a trick you can put points into it as you please, but the initial ability has to be picked up at a trainer. Tricks might include things like an AOE heal spell or an ability to freeze time for a few seconds. Nifty stuff.

Perks
Then there is perks. Perks are purchased with Fame points, similar to the fame thing in torchlight. You kill stuff and eventually you get another rank of fame and another perk point. Some perks are available from the start while others seem to unlock as I go. For example, the "Bully" perk became available when I developed my Body attribute to a certain point. Which was kinda funny. :D

Companion
Van Helsing also comes with a companion, the Lady Katarina. She's a Ghost. She can do things similar to the pets in torchlight, except you can configure her behavior a little better. You can tell her to automatically pick up items as you go and she also gets her own little skill tree and levels up on her own XP. Her abilities are passive and usually provide some boon to van helsing or herself. She can be switched between a melee, ranged or passive form (provides additional buffs).

Combat
The combat in this game is actually more involved than one might think. Aside from HP and Mana, Van Helsing also introduces a third resource called "Rage". This builds as you smack things and can be used to power your skills. Each skill has 3 possible power ups and each of these can be charged up to 3 times with a total of 3 charges spent per skill. So I might increase Cleave's damage 3 times or I might increase damage 2 times and use 1 charge to steal 5% of the damage in HP. You can also use presets here to save your favorite powerup and skill combos. Or you could use the time freeze ability I mentioned earlier to set things up at your own pace.

All in all combat is pretty fun. You can hotkey multiple abilities (some reviews got this wrong. rtfm, people) and you can use "tab" to switch between two sets of abilties as well.

Basically this has a nice feel of "easy to learn, hard to master" which is exactly what I want. I've started on the second hardest difficulty and I've already gotten my *** handed to me a few times, but not in a manner that felt unfair.

Humor
Yes, I made a category called humor. Van Helsing and Katarina have a lot of funny banter going on between them. I did not expect this from an ARPG, especially not at this price point, but there you have it. The voice acting is pretty good as well, I've seen worse in AAA titles. Well, not that I can see voice acting, but you know what I mean.

The loot, the loot, the loot is on fire!
I really like how you can improve MF via attributes here. Considering how disappointing I found loot to be in torchlight and path of exile, I really like it here. In addition to your standard fare in terms of rarity, items can also have a capacity for "essence" which is essentially open sockets, but on a more fluid scale. Let's say my Sword has 17 essence points, that means I can put two thingies of +10% MF into it (5 essence points each) and one thingy of ouch! for another 7 essence points for a total of 17. Or I could put 3 x +10% MF and have 2 essence left over.

Rare items drop at a decent rate, the way I spread my stat points around to get some MF going and they are interesting enough to be useful. I find myself swapping items around way more often than I did in PoE or TL2 because things that drop actually improve what I have.

to be continued...

I'd keep going but I actually am itching to get back in the game now. Later guys!

As most of my Diablo 2 projects these days, this character has been in the works unfinished for a year or so. I always liked wolfbarbs (had one the last Bnet ladder I played two years ago or so), and since 1.13 made it so much easier to level I had to handicap myself a bit to not feel so bad compared to the people who normal attacked to 79 or put up with the ww level bug with a bloodletter.

So My Brilliant Idea (TM) was to have a hybrid ww-wolf barb, that I dubbed WWF, which stands for Whirling Wild wolF. I didn't realize that wolf did not start with F until I started typing this out, yeah its like that. I was tired when I had the idea and named it. I did have a high damage ribcracker and the runes to up it, and then promptly found a 299% ribcracker the next day. Oh well, this will do.
My first twinked current version single player character is going to be a whirling wild wolf. Searching through my low level sets finds me deaths sword/belt, sigons boots/gloves, beserkers helm/body (only using because this is a barb!), and angelics ring (x2)/ammy/weapon. This should give me a good set of extra bonuses for the first 15 levels. I didn’t mule on any merc gear, which didn’t really matter. Level 15 – 1.07 Ravenclaw. Never used this before, and dang, one shotting packs is fun.

How do you guys tell the difference in Gomule? I guess I will personalize it when I get to Act V. Death’s sword has some pretty steep stat requirements, going to have to Hel a couple if I want to use them for my low level characters. Does Angelic’s weapon 75% damage count as off weapon (I think it does, I could swear I remember Aldur’s working that way), so does the enhanced damage count towards my main weapon as well because I am dual wielding? Hmm, if only the 350 ed on Aldurs weapon wasn’t part of completing the whole set, would be a fun way to add damage to a dual wielding wolf.

I appeared to have lost what I wrote down for normal and nightmare, but I remember it being easy. Iron Pelt + String of Ears gives enough mdr to be immune for most of nightmare. Maybe I need a little pdr, but I was a big tough barb with upped steeldriver or a pair of butchers pupils and then up'd ribcracker, so it was quite easy.

Hell Act 1:
Started at level 72, leveled to 76 by the pits, and a few pit runs got me to 79. I went wolf the entire rest of the act. It was not hard, no deaths (as a wolf, had a few in ww mode while testing the limits and also due to not changing most gear since normal) but a little slow.

Hell Act 2: I used my whirlwind spec a little more this act just to speed things up. Ran by a lot of undead skeletons, whirled through a lot of pi's. Berserk works a lot better on Pis than wolf form, especially considering I don't have any open wounds. So I was rarely in wolf form in this act.

Hell Act 3: This act was the real reason why I decided to combine the ww and wolf skills, so I could whirl through flayers and blow darters. This did work well, but wolf form also worked well because I was mostly one shotting them. WW form (as I am now calling it) was very helpful because it allowed me to leap across rivers and in the flayer dungeon level 3. I was in wolf form with Mephisto, but it took forever. Then I realized I was whacking him with my spirit, once I switched to the ribcracker he dropped like a baby seal. Club. And dropped me some Goreriders, so I went ahead and put them on.

Hell Act 4: I thought WW mode would be quicker here, so I walked out into the plains and immediately attempted to whirl through a triple doom knight boss pack. After a quick town trip, I switched to Wolf mode and handled them just fine. Finally Wolf mode has paid out! This pack was a lot easier when I could not get hit by every dude in the pack, and I finally made use of the act 2's merc decripify. Most of the first three acts he was waddling two screens back.
I had a very close NDE in the City of the Damned to a double pack of Damned. Yikes, light resistance is about 35 now (since I replaced Nats with Goreriders) with 3300 life in wolf form. Strange because a normal Damned dies in one hit. Hellforge was a Pul, so I can up the 299 ed ribcracker I found one or two days after I upped my current 290 ed ribcracker.

I had another NDE in the River of Flame to a dual pack of Venom Lords with both bosses being physical immune. Decrip breaks it and they go down once I take care of the minions. This guy has some serious troubles when he gets mobbed, I bet I could use some fcr. Think I only have 12%. which gives me a 6 frame recovery. Diablo was very easy and coughed up a Dirk Diggler.

Hell Act 5:

Ancients went down in 10 seconds as expected. WSK one had witches, vampires, and cold mages. WSK2 had snakes, shocking fiends and blow darters. Lovely low life enemies. After fighting all sorts of boss packs at the same time, it is nice and refreshing for the waves to come one at a time. Lister was extra fast mana burn, but no problem in Wolf Mode. Baal graced me with a rare-ish unique (Warshrike, only TC 78 though) and a 3% Eye of Etlich. But the drop looked pretty.

Synopsis:

Hell was easy when no gloams/death lords/PI's spawn in the last two acts.

1. Wolfbarbs are fun, but a stationary single target attack is something the barb already has. What the barb does not have is a stationary multi-target attack, so change wolfhowl to fury and then we would be talking. And getting to level 79 to take of Arreats hurts inside quite a lot.
2. WW barbs are too strong, going into Wolf Mode reds out out all of the barbs utility (Berserk, Leap, repositioning with WW, etc). If I had the gear to withstand whirling through tough stuff, I would not have been in Wolf Mode as much.
3. Wolf barbs are great if you can one shot everything. Having to 3-4 shot every single monster on the screen is annoying, which is why I took hell at P1. I am sure it would have been easy enough to up it to 3 or 5, I just didn't have the patience. Running around with right click held down and just mowing down monsters is satisfying. But, if I could do that in Wolf Mode, I could probably do it in WW Mode, but with less style.
4. Teleport is OP. Not that I have enigma, but I did most of hell without a merc because he was lagging behind looking at the paintings on the walls while I was tanking dangerous boss packs. When I was down to about 2 minions, then he might come help if he felt like it. The ability to Tele is something that you also give up in Wolf Mode.
5. I used angelic's most of the way, but switched it out for damage (highlords) and mana leach once I put wolfhowl on. Eww at the AR, but it was managable. I used Mav's Belt for mana leach at times, and not a bad tradeoff. Extra FRW is always welcome. Being the hybrid I was, I did need mana leach so I could whirl.
6. I have 69 leftover points and they all might go to strength for damage. My life was fine where it was, maybe a tad on the short side.
7. I am not a huge fan of prebuffing. I have a demon's limb in stash, and it raised my AR a little bit. I would rather have a weapon switch with some utility than just some stat sticks. I do have a Mang Song's to use when I hit level 85, that will be fun as a prebuff I guess. Actual, it is 82 I will xfer that on!

Future Plans:
1. Figure out out better gear for this guy while destroying the council. I could bring in a 1.07 Arkaines or Glad Bane, or shoot for Fort or Enigma, there are a lot of options. Shaftstop was just the best I had laying around. I also need to shore up the charms.
2. Council
3. Baal
4. Level
5. Make Lawbringer has an undead PI solution. That was the original plan, and I have a Shael Shael Heaven's Light ready to go (same mastery as Ribcracker). I really wish I had waited and quested properly, but I did run by a lot of ghosts and/or resorted to using Berserk.
6. I have a very close Ancient Tunnels map, so I might try that once I get Lawbringer.
7. Sadly, grief, on average, does the same damage per hit and does it quicker.

Thanks for Reading (the ramblings of an idiot)!

Going to be good, will be able to save a whole lot more. Going from a 3 bedroom with just myself, to a 3 bedroom with 2 other people. I'll have a nice little 10'x10'. BUT! BUT! The closet is 5'6''x4'! I'll have just enough room in the room for my bed (nice little queensize comfort select) and my computer desk and chair. They're pretty much all I use anyhow. It'll be good. Instead of a house to focus on, I'll have just a room to decorate and all that jazz. I reckon since I'm doing the school thing again, it'll be good and alright. Kind of like living in dorms, I suppose.

D2: A little here and there

OVG: Dark souls on PC. (7.49 on amazon. get it while its hot) Having fun with that. Some Counter strike Global Offensive as well. Having fun with that also. Haven't played much skyrim on PC lately. I got to the first dragon, and having a dang of a time. Some mod makes fighting harder and such. ACE mod, I believe. Fun stuff though. Do love the graphics with my radeon 7890.

Thoughts

Well, this one's been on the table for a long time, the goal being to make a frost amazon capable of kicking *** and being very smooth and easy to play. I had gathered up the items for a long time and used respecs on a lvl 94 alt to try it out in about 100 players 8 Worldstone keep runs, so there weren't many surprises. All that was left was to make a new character, and play it through the game..

With all the items equipped, this was a difficult character to play.. Not. I rolled through the whole game at p8 ( excepting bosses ). Turns out playing through the game is much easier than doing players 8 worldstone keep runs. Holy freeze aura and knockback shut down melee enemies, slow missiles and decoy shut down ranged ones, and anything non cold immune was frozen and shattered or slowed by mass frost nova procs. Exploding arrow did an okay job dealing with immunities ( why anyone would use strafe for this purpose, EA is 100 times better ), merc/GA killed dual immunes. A 1k manapool with 12% ML kept potion popping to a minimum and 23% LL helped too. I could have done with a little more frw though, and constantly needing to pick up arrows was irritating, but nothing to be done about that. I also avoided getting poisoned ( or used antidotes ), as I had low poison resists.

There was one part of the game that gave me pause, WSK1 with 2-3 bosspacks of frenzytaurs ( unaffected by freeze ), with might, fanaticism, extra fast with CI witches behind them with amp, multishot, extra strong. Boy, those took a while and a lot of retreating, slow missiles, decoy and many merc revives. But otherwise yeah, it's very strong and really enjoyable to play. Pierce+splash ownz. There is something hypnotic about shooting a few arrows and watching the whole screen explode into showers of tiny ice crystals.

Deaths: None ( lot of close calls though )
Finds: None ( well, some random Ist )

Amazon sept completion- 6/7

I just wanted to take a brief moment to introduce myself to the forum, before I go back to lurking.

I've been playing Diablo II off and on for maybe six or seven years now, got into it late in the game to begin with, and never got into multi-player at all. I don't usually go in for multiplayer; I like the mistakes I make to result in only my death, and not the death of a whole party relying on me.

But playing single player, I was always frustrated by getting a great drop for an Amazon while playing as a Barb, and so forth. And being able to find only one of a set, etc., without doing extensive MF boosting stuff. And the pack rat in me just couldn't stand selling set stuff, even if the set stuff was technically a throwaway set to begin with.

But I've been playing again recently, created a whole raft of new characters, and was playing as my Barbarian when Maelstrom, a ho-hum wand, dropped. And while it's sort of a ho-hum unique, it's also the kind of unique that a necro around level 14, when the wand first becomes available, might love. And I thought, "There has GOT to be some way to move things between files!" Especially since I was playing single-player off-bnet, I figured someone had to have an apparatus that permitted such a thing to happen.

And so I discovered GoMule through some google searches, and this community through some more searches to try to find out how to use it. I was thrilled -- all the things that always held me back about getting really into Diablo II were done away with in a thrice. And there was a whole community of people who also appreciated the single-player experience.

I'm probably gonna retreat for a while into lurking and learning the ropes of the GoMule tool. I'm also gonna read around about necro builds, as I'm interested in building a rather dedicated golemist named Judah Low, but unsure how to proceed. But until I delurk, I wanted to say hello and say thanks for the great community and wealth of resources you've all amassed here!

While levelling my necromancer from lvl 93 to 94, I decided to try out iron golems seriously. With maxed out golem mastery + battle orders, I still managed to lose six insight iron golems in the process. The levelling was done in p8 Wordstone keep runs mostly, and some p8 chaos. The main killers, I think, were doom knights, oblivion knights, witch thingys, frenzy taurs. It is kinda hard to keep alive honestly when some enemy starts attacking it instead of the dozen or so skeletons. I can teleport it out, but that messes up my army and I have no way to heal it before the next fight, since I can't pop it a potion or anything. And sometimes it just dies some how when I am not paying attention.

( I did also die once, due to a bad teleport into cursed might enchanted frenzytaurs , and the IG died as well, but the remaining were just IG deaths )

I am curious as to your experiences with the iron golems, because there are often suggestions of having pride, beast, infinity iron golems but if you can't keep it alive what's the point? It's not that insight is really required here or anything, because of double SoJs+ 1k mana pool + occasional potions but it definitely CE spamming and teleporting around much easier..

Just made it to act 3 following the MF guide I read in here...and this is my current gear:

russet heavy gloves of fortune (23% MF + 17% fire resist)

unique circlet with lighting dmg, 26 life and 35% poison resist

heavy boots of fortune (20%MF)

steel runeword on a battleaxe

artic furs and binding (40% MF...sucks that the belt can hold just 2 rows of potions though)

14%MF ammy

19% and 10% MF rings

merc:

vicious pike

gemmed breast plate with 39% MF

and a circlet with 24 - 54 fire dmg.

I'm not sure how to move on now though, and I think it's time to change my weapon. Just read that I can't make steel on a Maul so I'm not really sure what weapon I could use. Any suggestions of which weapons I can craft or buy to move on?? Should I also keep MFing during normal?

Thanks for the help!

Hi all and thanks for looking in.

Warning : Possible nOOb questions coming up.

So I have a few questions mostly centered around time-travel.

I recently found a Ber rune in LK in 1.13, and together with a few other mid-high runes found in LK, 2 x Sur, 2 x Vex, an Ohm (council found) and a Cham (AT), I can finally start to think about some solid runewords.

As this amount has taken me a while to acheive, I want to make the best RW's I can.

So early last week I got 1.07 going, and took off with a FO-SF sorceress. Made it to Nilhatalaketake (It's hard to stop with his name) yesterday, and now was looking for some clarification on a couple of issues.

1} Giant Thresher : I have a Giant Thresher rack in LK so I'm running it, looking for a couple of 4 OS Superior Eth drops for an Infinity. I've read they're an optimal base. Is there anything different I should be looking for here for an Infinity? Cryptic axe / Great Poleaxe etc, for the difference in damage vs speed? Also I can't find info anywhere on the numbers provided by the Superior mod in 1.07, can anyone help with that?

2} Berserker Axe : I have never found one of these in 1.13, and I haven't found a rack in 1.07 yet, not wanting to reroll until I have found the thresher's from above.

2a} Oath - My solitary Oath atm is in a small cresent, and I really need to upgrade. My thoughts were a Superior Eth 4 OS BA. Oath gives the indestructable mod anyway, so all sweet there.

2b} Grief - Have never used one. Would likely only see use atm on my Zeal Paladin Council runner who is currently using Oath. Superior 5 OS BA. Am also going to look for an Eth version, more on that later.

2c} Beast - As above, have never used one, how does it compare to Grief, which one would be the better investment? As above, Superior 5 OS BA.

2d} So to round off the Berserker Axe question(s) does what I'm thinking sound right? And as with the Giant Thresher, what sort of numbers does the superior mod add?

I will state that I do realise I have very little chance of aquireing a perfect superior mod roll, but I am curious as to the ranges.

3} Grand Charms : I found a chest not far from the stairs down from Pindle at Nillys place, and I run that a little looking for GC's with the intention of bringing them to 1.13 to reroll as I don't have anyone in 1.13 yet who can effectively run for a ilvl 90+ GC besides a Fishymancer who takes forever to get to and bring down D / B / Nilly. In ATMA they show as ilvl 99, this will stay the same when brought forward? Also I assume the dmg charms and MPK rings stay the same also?

The actual transferring process :

I use ATMA in 1.07 because GoMule doesn't work, but I use GoMule in 1.13. How do I transfer the items I want in 1.07 to 1.13?

ATMA (e)bugging Question :

I read the mini guide in the stickys, and this is my (probably wrong) understanding.

The (e)Bug happens automatically when bringing 1.07 items forward correct?

So then to ATMA-(e)Bug an Item

I find my, for example, 5os Eth Berserker Axe in 1.07, send it forward to 1.13, then make Death in it, save the Death RW in ATMA (I think I read somewhere you have to move it around in ATMA? Is that correct, and if so, any special method needed?), then Hel cube the Death RW out of it, then make Beast / Grief and it will retain the indestructable mod?

Can I then go back to using GoMule with my ATMA-Ebugged item with out the chance of a major malfunction?

If I understand this part correctly I will probably be looking for the Eth version of the BA I stated in the Grief section as well, even though I am in RL lactose intolarent.

I think thats everything I'm wondering about right now, there are other questions, but they can wait until I'm nearer to actually trying them out, (mainly crafting etc).

Sorry for the size of this post, but I've been researching a lot lately, and I have so much info floating around in my head, I really needed this to sort it all and get confirmation about those issues I'm hazy on.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any help anyone can give, it will be much appreceated.

Hey all!

I have a few general questions, and a few not so general ones. So I'm here, asking you guys for your wisdom!

After deeding my first unwtinked, single pass, HC trapper at normal duriel, I decided to make a new one. She's currently lvl 61, in A3 NM, and doing quite well. My mercenary uses skin of the flayed one, Stealskull (totally stoked when this dropped. Higher mf than of luck, with leech? Yes please), and Insight Poleaxe, so I'm pretty set on merc gear. I'll give him tals helm at 66, and will make a better insight as soon as I find the base for it.

As for my gear, I'm using mostly MF gear. Chain gloves of fortune, greaves of luck, amulet of luck, fortuitous ring of chance, nagelring, Rhyme Tower Shield (max block), 3PTopaz Artisan's Great Helm of the Fox, 3os ring mail with topazes, crafted belt with +47 life, and a claw with +1LS on it. Honestly, I'm not struggling much at all *knock on wood*. As long as I'm careful, I seem to be doing well.

So here's my first question. What the heck should I be gambling for? I'm about to hit the gold limit, and don't have a clue. I have a few excellent circlets for when I move away from MF gear, though I suppose I could gamble for a better one. I tried looking for a better ring, but getting a double MF roll is near impossible.

On that note, what about boots? I'd love to find a triple res pair for hell, but I'm not sure if that can even spawn at this level.

When and where can I shop for a better claw? I've heard of awesome +3 trap claws being shopped, but have no clue when or where to look. I'd be fine with a simple +2LS.

What lvl is it worth starting to craft amulets? Most people say 89 for 2 skills, but I'll guardian by then assuming I don't deed, so I figured I'd try my luck at finding something more useful than +35 mf. I have a prismatic amulet ready if needed, but should I start crafting now? I'd really like +1/2 traps, and resists. The rest I don't much care about.

So yeah, I'm basically wondering what to shop, craft, and gamble at 60+. For now, my mf gear is fine, but I'm not sure if my level is adequate to gamble for hell viable gear yet. Thoughts?
