There are several hints in the game and from other media how the story of Diablo 3 will progress.
The most obvious is Cpt. Rumford's appearance as ghost just before the fight with Diablo, basically blaming the hero for her/his deeds. We didn't even know at this point that he is dead. Was Tristram destroyed? This will surely play a role in the future.
Second, what about the "Wrath" movie where Diablo talks to Imperius before he is slain, where Diablo says something about knowing what Imperius really is, and what even his angel brethren don't know? SPOILER: In the CE book, there is artwork of Imperius with a skull instead of no face/golden mask.
Third, is Leah really dead? There is too much emphasis on her likeable character in the game to have her vanquished simply like that. Also, what about Adria? Did she die? Escape? She did too much of a crime to simply be ignored.
