Hi there!
I just made a quick video comparing the different interpretations of the town of Tristram across the three installments in the Diablo series.

They've clearly been very consistent with aspects, objects and the layout of the town, but it deviates a little when you get to the outskirts. (especially in Diablo 2 where everything is just walled off).

What do you guys think - have Blizzard kept the "essence of Tristram" in Diablo 3?

i did not really feel like i was in tristram at any point during the beta. i mean somethings felt the same but mostly no, i do not like how they did it. i dont like how they did it in d2 either but it felt more like we were there. just my opinion anyway

Wow, really good job. Impressed. :)

On a separate note - why you so silent, D3?

Well... technically the location in D3 is New Tristram. So it's a whole other place.

EDIT: My bad, Old Tristram is shown in the video.

Awesome video, greatly enjoyed watching.

I think this video does a very good job of showing off just how much they improved the atmosphere over D2.
Now it actually feels like a town, not like a flat bunch of bitmaps. The darkness is also creeping in. The difference between D2 and D3 is literally like night & day.

Awsome comparsion, TBH I didn't bother checking the diferences in the Tristram Ruins but after seeing this, I'm glad they remade it almost exacly like in the 1st one.

Great vid!

The D2 Tristram was extraordinary in it's crappyness so atleast that's where D3 easily beats it in my opinion

Good job on the video, but the cartoony art style and the extreme blue-tone of the D3 version makes it feel very disconnected from the previous two. Doesn't feel like the same place for me.

you start in new tristram but you go to old tristram which is what is shown in the video

I'd say that the graphics span a wider range in Diablo3. It changes between this blue foggy night environment to a warmer orange one in town, and a dark uninviting and less saturated feel in the crypts and dungeons.

great stuff there, i played Diablo 2 before the first one but must admit that Blizz did a great job restoring that place better in D3 than in the second one...

Apocalypse

i really wish they fully recreated it though. leave nothing out, put everything exactly where it was. just open up one path into and out of town

Great comparison. Takes the doubt away from the doubters.

I think Blizz did an excellent job with the recreation, and also like the graphics more with this comparison. I can see the Diablo world more vivid now and not just coldhearted pixel animations (witch i actually like a lot!)

Still, D1 got the right mood with the red lights coming from the cathedral! They should have kept that "lights from hell" scenario. Thous where the things that made Diablo a scary game. So, less blue, more red! :)

Great video! The main thing I don't like about the changes is the different path to the cathedral. But, meh, that's kinda nit-picky.

Nice!
A little attention to details like what we see here fuels my hope that D3 would be up to par with its predecessors.

Hahahaha. A little attention to details :D

They can't see the biggest thing, the ****ing realistic and gothic art style of previous two games in front of their eyes or those cross windows and tombs but this guy's talkin about some crazy attention to details.. right :)

Go fool somebody else pal.

Gosh you are right! How blind was before I read your post! How could I thought even for a second to compare between D1&2 and D3 and think that D3 might after all be worth the long wait. That's it. The last straw for me. This is my last post on these forums I am no longer interested in D3 and will not buy this game even if you pay me to.

No seriously theres something wrong with D3 graphics. Everything is little bit blurry and black isnt black its grey or something.

Also wheres the music in D3??

Great video it and really appreciate the work you put into it. A sign of a good piece is it will make people talk and this video does that.

Also to people bringing up the dark thing I really thought that has been beaten to death by now. Honestly who cares at this point we are getting what we are getting so deal with it. Your constant repeating of the same thing is has done nothing and continues to do nothing. http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i54/jennymbraun/Smiley/dead-horse-fast2.gif

I've learned to like D3 graphics quite a bit but this is what still bothers me it feels like my screen has vaporized water all over it and I'm just waiting for it to clear when I watch D3 vids lol

The graphics are definitely changed - for better or for worse, even though that's probably a matter of opinion.
As I mentioned earlier, the graphics and and feel of the environment changes a lot depending where your character is in diablo3. However, ALL the environments in the beta are really quite dark and gloomy, and there's definitely no rainbow coloring anywhere.

Again, thanks for liking my video on youtube :)
You guys are the best!

hehehehe....

People complaining about the 'fuzziness' of the graphics, use a filter to sharpen it. Easy fix imo.

Its not really a fix.

I don't understand how it isn't a quick fix. The graphics are what they are... if you want to get rid of the fuzziness (sharpen it) then apply a sharpen filter. Fuzziness gone.

If you are complaining about the art direction, well there is no fix for that.

With that filter the UI looks weird and antialiasing looks like its turned off. To be honest i dont like the new modern graphics in any game and Diablo 3 is little bit better then other games in that regards.

Have you watched the end of the video when he entered the cathedral? Notice the "wind" sound in D1 and drums and then look at D3. You cant tell me that its the same. Also notice how blue/grey the graphics in D3 are when you are outside. Pause at 5:10 and look at the top left corner.

I always thought that the 16 levels of D1 should be a special area in D2 or D3. That would be cool, but I'm sure it violates some silly storyline somewhere.

+1
Overall, the atmosphere is exactly as it should be. If you play through it you can feel the tension that they tried to portray in this area. I'm sure that if there had been the capability to add such radical fog effects and etc. in D1 and D2, the devs would have done it.

Very nice video. Too bad the Tristram theme isnīt in D3... that tune just gives a nostalgic sense of feeling.

I liked the video - well done..

The eariness of D1 seems to be more evident in D3 than in D2, agree that the D1 theme thrown in would be nice, maybe after killing the SK like act 4 in D2 after big D goes down?? I dont like in D3 how you jump in the hole and fall into the Cathedral, I think they should make some stairs, a ladder, something ???

Nice, didn't actually recognize some of the things during playing the D3 Beta, such as the entrance to Leoric's passage being the original entrance to the Catacombs, etc
