Here are some clips of the monk in action that were shown in the presentation yesterday. You can see things like Tempest Rush, Wave of Light, Way of the Hundred Fists and Sweeping Wind. The gameplay looks super fast, which I think is awesome.

This one is from the official teaser, which I thought was a little boring compared to the action you see above.

Thanks very much for sharing. The temple looked terrible. The pillar looks terrible, too. It just pops up out of nowhere. It doesnt even fall from the sky or (better) breaks through the ground below the enemy. Also it doesnt give a monk-y or holy vibe at all. Its just a stone-pillar. nothing more. Totally disappointing. The explosion part is okay. They could make the pillar a pillar of light and let it emerge from the ground. Then maybe ok, but the current version is really bad.

All in all I like the monk the most so far.

I'll agree that the pillar is pretty lame. Its much better than that temple was, but it still needs something else. I liked the concept of the temple, but the practicality was a bit off.

I liked how they went on and on about how you are going to get powned later on in the game, makes you really want to start with a HC character!

Here's another one showing a new area without too much action... Pretty sure this is the last one :(

The pillar is hilarious.

It's actually called The Pillar of the Ancients (the Wave Of Light skill modified by Obsidian rune), and it does massive damage.

Spectacular name, but what, isn't that just a normal pillar? :scratchchin:

Seriously some broken rubble can actually do 100% damage and another 500% damage? Sheesh...

The pillar and it's effect needs to be redesigned, they did it for the bell, pretty sure they can do it for the pillar.

Yeah, the skill animation for that pillar of the ancients move (or whatever it will end up being called) is kinda shaky.

Here is my idea:

Have a ray of light appear over the spot where the pillar will be.

The pillar (either is all white/holy like or blazing with holy fire) strikes the ground causing the first aoe damage, then after a second or 2 blows up causing lethal shrapnel to go flying around for perhaps a larger aoe area.

Initial strike does more damage, second strike has a larger aoe but does less damage.

It doesn't make sense to have the pillar come from the ground as there is that typical "hell is below ground" idea. Also a dirty pillar erupting from the ground doesn't seem to be that great.

HOWEVER, this would make it work.

Pillar erupts from ground dealing lots of damage for a small aoe.

After a few seconds the earthy looking pillar cracks open releasing a ton of light/holy damage to the nearby enemies. The light/holiness then shoots up into the sky or perhaps envelops the Monk giving some sort of bonus for a few minuscule seconds.

The pillar looks awful...asides from the dull, ugly art, I have the same problem with the pillar as I have with the bell - it's too physical. If the Monk is gonna be summoning stuff, it should be magical, not physical. I big stone pillar makes no sense, it should be a pillar of light.

That is why both the pillar idea and even the bell should be physical manifestations of light/holiness. Make it look golden + shiny and when it blows up (or whatever) make it have a few golden mist nova's that do the damage or something.

I would expect the Barbarian to have earthy physical things like perhaps grabbing a stone pillar out of the earth to hurl it at his foes lolz...

Actually I say toss the whole pillar idea with person who thought this up (along with the lame ferrets... crows/ravens like shiny stuff, ferrets just play around making a mess).

Instead of the whole "pillar" and even the "bell (bells? wtf?!? make it a gong if you're staying with the whole Asian theme...) here is my idea.

Beam of Light, or Ray of Light or whatever.

Monk stands in place and light comes from above. Monk absorbs the light (takes about 2-3 seconds) then a huge blast of holy damage goes around the Monk.

Is this more realistic for the monk? Yes.
Is this better then some stupid pillar or bell that randomly appears saying, "WTF am I doing here?!?!?" YES!

I really hope they change the lame corny aspect of the skills and make Diablo 3 more bad @$$ and not like some cutesy game such as torch light or some other lame game.

and your skewed narrowminded perspective is important for the creative process of Diablo how ? right. it isnt :D people like you are the reason why there is so little developement in Gamemechanics and Lore and generally - why there is no fresh air in the entertaiment industry. you want to have completely new cool mechancis and archetypes but at the same time they HAVE to be familiar.

this is the reason why we have stuff like 20 permutations of the HALO suit.

Art guy: hey im a free thinking individual full of fresh ideas and concepts for Character`s
Marketing Guy: i dont give **** , Halo sells. IŽll pay you to recreate the HaloSuit so stfu and get to work already.

The pillars rising up from the ground idea is utterly terrible. That crap is more in tune with what a summoning character like a necro or witch doctor would have in its arsenal. The idea would actually be pretty awesome for the WD. He could summon some voodoo totem poles that shoot poison clouds and/or poison darts within the area of the spell. Think of the synergy with grasp of the dead plus that hypothetical spell.

Coming back to the monk; They should at least be consistent with the theme of the character. A monk uses holy energy, so nix the silly earthen pillars and make them be a projectile like a spear since this ties in perfectly with what's already in place in the game (The Templar companion, which is also a holy warrior, uses a spear as his main weapon FFS). These spears/projectiles/whatever are made of holy energy and rain down from heaven around the monk doing damage at the point of impact, then these spears/projectiles/whatever explode with a blast of holy energy a short moment later. Sort of like an evolved aoe fist of the heavens.
