I guess it could, but that kinda depends on which drivers the game is complaining about.

Might be worth updating at least the graphics drivers if nothing else just to see if that helps. If you use an Nvidia card, I know they've released drivers to help optimize BF3 performance.

I think I use Nvidia. Now excuse me, I'm surfing the web for something I want for my birthday:D

Haha sounds good. I need to reboot my computer anyway, since my CPU load is varying anywhere from 3%-80% and I'm not even doing anything. And the process that is using all this isn't even showing up in the task manager as using that amount from the CPU. At most there's like 3-4 processes using 1%-3% of my CPU power each. Which is very far from the top 80% load or so that task manager displays in the lower left corner as being used. -.-

Uh oh.... I might be having catastrophic hardware failure. o.O

At least my computer keeps shutting down on its down and rebooting. It's like someone is pressing the reset button, without actually pressing the button. The screen just goes black and I'm back to POST screen and computer booting up/loading OS. :O

Well at least if I dissappear for a few days you know why. My computer broke down, and I'm going to be ROALLY PISSED OFF! because I can't afford replacing the most expensive parts atm. And what's worse this is happening during the time leading up to D3 release! **** MY LIFE! =(

Edit: Might be overracting, as all of this happened after the recent install of BF3, punkbuster and microsoft updates, as well as updating of a couple drivers, installation of directx 11 and whatnot. But still... FML. Time to drink some more and look at the event viwer for clues. Wish me luck.

@SK: If you need to get hold of me, check steam to see if I'm online. And if I'm not... well pray to the computer guards that all of this is just some random glitches, please do that.

I didn't even know they made USB headphones, Korial.

Actually this one is pretty kickass! And the best part is the 7.1 surround is decent, and since it's USB you don't need a special sound card to make it work properly. So no extra expenses.

The downside is you don't have specific sound card drivers, but instead rely on software for all the functions to work properly. Although I just updated the software, and I noticed something cool. The new software intergrates my headphone and keyboard into the same software. Kinda neat as it means my task bar thingy (lower right corner of the screen) has less icons in it. :D Downside is I need to learn the new UI.

Anyways the computer seems stable (for now). Just need to go over event viwer. Yues I'm slow, but with a skype and a steam conversation going, can you blame me?

I got caught up in the steam convo mostly, since I got some tips as to possible hardware being faulty. One of those being the SSD, as some brands/models basically have an expiration date based on how long it's been used/how much data have been stored/overwritten. And once that point has been reached, you can basically kiss good bye to that SSD as the "damage" is irreparable.

Anyway now I need to configure all my sound settings again. -.-

FMLx2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like old school! Or else it wouldn't fit the rest of my music system!

That's interesting. Do would you recommend getting USB headphones then?

Math is awesome.

Everything is relative.

It depends on what you plan on using them for.

Logitech G35 (the one I'm using) is pretty good, has good sound quality (although I've got tinitus, so my sense of sound isn't the best), and the headset blocks out a lot of outside noise as well. I'm happy with it, but I've seen a lot of people complain about the build quality, and that they break within about a year of normal use.

I just like to thinkt hose people are rough with their headset and that this one will last me a couple years at least.

I'm actually looking for a headset for my computer. Any recommendations?

Not really. I'm not very good with sound. I could ask a friend, but he's mostly into speaker systems, so not sure how familiar he is with headphones.

But a headphone that costs around 1200 NOK/160 EUR/210 USD have for the most part pretty good quality. If you want some really awesome onces then increase the price by about two thirds of the one listed above. General rule of thumb in terms for pricing.

Not sure if Bose produce any headphones, but I've listened to some of the speaker systems for PC, and the sound quality of those are amazing. But the price also matches that quality. IE they're expensive.

@Kori: you said the advantage of a USB headset is taht you don't need a sound card .... I've never bought a sound card for my PC and just used onboard sound.

I should've worded myself better.

The advantage is if you want 7.1 surround, you won't need a new sound card if your on-board one only supports 5.1 Which isn't that big a problem anymore as most newer mother boards comes with 7.1 surround sound support as well as the option of using digital sound (optical/S/PDIF) as well. Especially if that motherboard is aimed towards gaming, or just a high end motherboard in general.

However when I went form using the on-board sound card of the Asus P5Q3 (IIRC) motherboard to having an external sound card, in this case creative sb x-fi platinum, the sound quality was noticably better. It also gave me the option of using S/PDIF, alongside the standard RCA jacks which is located in the 5.25" I/O box that's being used to gain 5.1 surround for my xbox using the Logitech 5.1 surround speakers.

In other words if you need any special input/output options, an external sound card might be the way to go, in which case you don't need to bother with what kind of headset you buy. However if you do not require any special I/O interfaces, then a USB headphone might be a good choice. Of course everything depends on what motherboard you have and what that supports.

I guess it's true what they say... everything is relative.

Yea, I just want one for gaming and maybe Skype as well. I'll check some out soon

You need a headset as well?

Ok same price range as SK then, aproximately 80$ or so. Let me know if that is too much. Also you guys didn't mention (and I forgot to ask), is it important with good sound isolation? IE you can't easily hear noise/sound from the room around you? Ok on to the headsets I looked at!

The SteelSeries Siberia v2 is apparently a very good headset with a good microphone. Recieved good reviews, works well for gaming and skype, and is comfortable to wear even for long gaming sessions. I've not personally tried a whole lot of headsets, but I've had an ex co-worker of mine say good things about the SteelSeries Siberia headsets. Downside is the sound isolation isn't the best IIRC. But like I said an earlier co-worker of mine gave this one really good praise, as well as another friend. Basically to quote him "if it's the same\no need for closed headphones Steelseries Siberia v2 ftw". So if you want to hear what people around you say, this is supposedly a very good headset for an afforsable price, with a good microphone to boot! Also since the range is 10-28000 Hz makes it good for listening to music. The bass is the Siberias weakest point though, as it can sometimes sound kinda muddy. Got a link that sums up this headset pretty well. http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/40914-steelseries-siberia-v2-full-size-headset-review-6.html

Another one that has recieved good reviews is the Corsair Vengeance 1500. Again same "problems" as Siberia in that the sound isolation isn't the best. So you can easily hear (from what I've read) noise from other places in the room. But the sound quality (described as being clear and crisp without too much bass), as well as the mic quality is pretty good. Downside is some people have complained about poor build quality and that it breaks pretty fast. This could just be a production error or a bad batch of headphones that have reached the market. Compared to the Siberia v2 though this one has a range of 20-20000 Hz, which is apparently quite a noticable difference. Although again everything is relative, so depends on motherboard on-board sound card/external sound card and how sensitive to sound you are. But a wider range is better.

Also I have to promote my own headset, the Logitech G35. The surround sound is decent, the USB connection is a nice addition, although you need a specific software to benefit from the surround sound options. The programmable buttons as well as volume adjustment on the side of the headset is a nice thing. I've used it a bit to switch between songs without having to manually click on the music player and switch the song there. It also has nice sound isolation, epevially compared to the other 2 mentioned above if reviews are anything to go by. Downside is people complain a bit about too strong bass, but for me that is not an issue. Especially since I listen to a lot of rock, and the sound quality for that is pretty damn good. Also I've had 3 real life friends complain about build quality, saying the headset breaks within about a year of normal-heavy use. However so far during the 5-6 months I've had this the build quality has not seemed bad at all. Overall I'm very pleased with this one, and I've seen it on sale several times on Norwegian online stores, and they stock runs out pretty quick! =P The sound range is 20-20000 Hz on this one, so if you're very sensitive to sound and don't mind a headset without proper sound isolation, Siberia v2 might be better. However if you can't find this one on sale, it would fall in the price range of 150-160$ or so.

But after talking with a friend, you won't notice any difference between 10-20000 Hz and 20-20000 Hz unless you're a true audiophile. The 10/20-20000 Hz to 10/20-28000 Hz is a different matter, but again unless you are sensitive to sound quality might not be that big a difference.

Although it's difficult to get away from the fact that for the most part, a headset in the ~150-200$ price range will have better quality compared to ~80$. For the most part. >_> But if you can increase the price range to around 130-150$ you can get a pretty superb headset without taking the jump to professional range headphones (and price range of 200-300$).

kestegs
20-03-2012, 01:12

And there it is, the wot :p

I was thinking more like 20$ xD

And there it is indeed. =)

20$ range? Be prepared for your ears to bleed!

Honestly I would never get a headset for gaming and skype in that price range. Especially if you do some research and treat your headset nicely, it can easily last for 3-5 years. Then again I use my headset on nearly a daily basis, so spending a bit extra cash on it to get proper quality is a small choice for me. =)

Do I play all my audio through it? No I don't. But that is only because I sometimes prefer not to use a headset, or if I'm cooking/doing other non-computer related stuff, I got music or a Starcraft 2 commentated match (courtesy of Day[9] or HuskyStarcraft) playing in the background on my speakers. Also since I don't have a proper TV, my Xbox is connected to my PC monitor, and to get good sound I need to reroute the sound from my xbox through my PC speakers using RCA jacks, hence the Creative X-Fi platinum sound card.

But for any sort of skype usage, and especially gaming while on skype I use my headsets. Also during the evening I use only my headset, for games, music and video. And I have to say I've fallen in love with this headset.

With that said it's kinda difficult to explain my sound setup. When I use my speakers, which I need to manually set the priority of which sound system is being used, I can also switch between gaming mode and entertainment mode. Obviously gaming is for... well gaming and entertainment is for music and movies/general audio stuff. When I switch to headset I use only the headset, and exclusively use the 7.1 emulated surround sound option enabled. At first this setting can sound really strange, but now that I'm used to it, I find it difficult to turn it off.

Add to this some weird stuff happening when using the xbox and I fiddle around with sound priority a bit every day. For instance sometimes I set speaker to primary sound device when on the xbox, which lets me hear when people type to me on steam and on skype (if my status is set to online). However if I only want to hear the xbox sounds I might leave my headset as primary device, but still get sound through my speakers for the xbox. This way I won't hear any sounds from the PC when someone messages me, while still getting the same audio quality for my xbox.

korialstraz
20-03-2012, 01:30
@Kegs: Apparently in the 20$ price range you can basically get whatever you find that looks comfortable. Try and get one with the best range of sound those (as low and high range of Hz as possible), just take the listed range with a grain or 5 of salt in that price range.

kestegs

You might be right on that end about gaming headsets. But honestly, will a regular person who's not really picky about sound quality notice any difference?

And it doesn't have to be a gaming headset I guess. I'd be really interested in looking at a few models (if you have some examples). I've heard of Senheiser (Sennheiser?) before, but not really looked into it. Gaming headsets as you call it has been more than enough for my simple audio taste. =D

Only if you can't satisfy them yourself impotenttegs.

My wife has no need for toys and thus does not have any.

Rosewill make ok budget cases IIRC

kestegs
20-03-2012, 23:45
it's pretty much the same exact look as my old one, this one works though. The f and number keys had taken too much abuse from D2.

Jcakes
20-03-2012, 23:49
Wait you actually use the F keys in D2? You didn't remap them ....

Skjolde

f ?

@ SK: It was clear to me as he was talking about F keys (plural) I.E F1 etc.

kestegs
21-03-2012, 02:15
I knew somebody would get confused :p

also the alt key is pretty written out, and no I don't remap most of the keys.

Skjolde
21-03-2012, 02:22
Instead of the F keys I used the mouse scroller.

kestegs
21-03-2012, 02:24
That would never work for me. Never ever ever.

Skjolde
21-03-2012, 02:26
Oh, it's quite good. Go try it, now.

Jcakes
21-03-2012, 02:31
Noobstegs probably doesn't know how to remap keys.

kestegs
21-03-2012, 02:32
I've tried it and it's stupid. It's no way to play hc that's for sure.

Skjolde
21-03-2012, 02:34
Scrolling or remapping keys?

Because the latter would be pretty handy in HC.

kestegs
21-03-2012, 02:36
Scrolling. I remap a few, like print screen and stand still. Also add the f9-f12 for skills.

Skjolde
21-03-2012, 02:37
On my old keyboard, the F keys just seems to be too far away. You know, the standard keyboards where there is a gap between the number (1233456789) and the F keys.

It's beta so it is not too bad but to be honest I only played a few games at my buddy's house. But he says that you get the same dipwads in dota2 that he got in LOL and the original Dota games. Even in WC3 the people who played dota were elitists and annoying imo. Which is unfortunate because the games can be fun.

Here in Norway you are responsible for your own network. If you have an open wireless and someone logs on and do something illigal with it, you'll be the person responsible, unless you can prove in a court (if it goes that far) that the computer used for said action is not part of your household.

kestegs

Yea...I may be a bit jealous.

Which games aren't we talking about? All recent CoD games, Battlefield 3, Dead Island, Halo games, Dead Rising, Gears of War games, heck any sort of online shooter game will release DLC's to include more maps and whatnot. =P

DLC is just another way for developers to take more money from us for stuff that should have shipped with the game. Imagine if you had to pay for each D2 patch .....

Undoubtedly. Companies figured that why release content that might not quite be ready (and obviously isn't part of the core storyline), when they can delay the release of those, include it in a later patch, call it downloadable content and earn extra cash on it. From a bussiness stand point, doing the latter makes the most sense no? =P

Yea it sucks for us gamers, but until we grow fed up with it and just all stop buying DLC's, or enough of us do to not make it worth the devs time, then DLC's will be part of the gaming scene.

Edit: Since that other forum was too creepy to sleep in, I'll crash here again. It feels a lot safer.

Diablo 3 went with the RMAH instead of DLC which is a breath of fresh air imo.

kestegs
22-03-2012, 10:39
Yea, I'm not sure if I will use it at all or not. I'm not putting any of my money into it but I may sell and then buy. Or I might just sell, depends on how I feel later. People will use it to buy, people still spend tons of money on D2, I'm sure they will do it on D3 also.

Jcakes
22-03-2012, 10:49
Maybe. I will possibly sell and then buy. There is no way I am putting my own money into there.

kestegs
22-03-2012, 11:07
I kinda don't like the idea of taking money out of the game. seems like it might make it less fun eventually.

Muggs
22-03-2012, 11:14
The RMAH will work because although purists won't be buying a lot of people will be buying. Look at games with successful micro transactions and people have no issue throwing down 5-10bucks, sometimes more, here and there for a new skin or mount etc. So I see them doing the same with the RMAH. If you read the Bnet boards you see a lot more people who are ok with the RMAH. I won't be using it and I doubt I will be even selling on it unless I find 2 of something an Alt can't use. When I played D2 I played with me and about 8 friends and never traded outside that circle and pretty much found everything I ever had and was very happy.

The nvidia 680 was just released today so you could wait for the 660 to come out and it should decimate d3. Of course with you using on board video like is listed on that spec sheet a 460 or 560 would be a huge upgrade for you now. Actually any discrete (non integrated GPU) would be a big upgrade for you.
