Hi all !
I'm not in the beta, as most of you out there, and am eagerly waiting for february to come. (Also so I can be finished with my studies. If I'm lucky, I'll have D3 a couple days around the end of my Masters Project ! Yay ! That aside...) I keep hearing about the "7 skills limit went down to 6 skills limit". But I've been wondering :
What of the default auto-attack ? Does it count as an extra "free 7th skill" that all characters have ?
And about the famous potion slot, which is "number 5". Can one put something else than a potion in that slot ? Like one of those boosting potions ? (I saw a video of some person putting them in 3 and 4) What about replacing the potion slot with an active skill ? Would this be possible ? Of course, doing so, you'd loose the ability to insta-heal, to the profit of having an extra skill in hotkeyed.
The reason behind my questions is :
If you have 6 active skills hotkeyed to 1-4 and lmb and rmb, where do you put your normal attack skill ? (If you're, say, a DH, and want to shoot arrows, or a Wizzy and want to shoot balls of energy for whatever reason) It isn't possible ?
Thanks for reading, and I hope to get some insight from the Beta testers out there ! :)
(Just another hundred days to go)
They do seem to have a tight limit on the number of hot keys allowed, and I hope they open up more of them for things like potions, scrolls, elixirs and auto-attack.
Disclaimer: I am not against the 6-skill limit.

There are 8 skill slots:
5 in skill bar
2 in mouse button
1 in RMB (switch with X )
Please inform yourself before posting this crap

Way to go, tough guy. You really showed him with your superior knowledge of a video game. Feel better about yourself now?

I'll ask differently, as my way of informing myself didn't seem to suit everyone...
Can anything else from the red potions be put in the fifth slot on the hotbar ?

Yes, as far as I know you can put potions, scrolls and elixirs into any slot. You can also replace the potion in the 5th slot with a skill.

You can remove anything from the bar by holding down left mouse click and then dragging off the bar.
Potions are on 5 by default but you can assign Potions, Elixirs, Scrolls to any of the 1-5 hotkeys (but not on the mouse clicks).
You can only put normal attack on a mouse click, not in the 1-5 hotkeys. Most people won't use normal attacks (unless you build wizard/demon hunter for it with the passives).
When you right click on a hotkey slot, you get a little menu of available skills and items you can place shown in the 2nd screenshot below.

Thanks JumpyMonkey for the information !
I didn't know that normal attack could only go on the mouse. Makes sense now that it's been told... And I can think of quite the DH which needs normal attack. But it would be part of a flavorful character, and far from perfect efficiency. Mostly movement skills, defensive ones, and a lot of escape. (I seem to be repeating myself there...) And only normal attack as a way to dispatch monsters. No flashy arrows. Anyway, I digress from the theme of this thread.
Thank you all for the answers ! See you around.

PS: If there was already a thread about it, I'd have loved to be given a link to an already existing discussion...

There are 8 spots for use-me skills/items...
the 1-5 keys, and 3 mouse button assignments (there is still a swappable right-click)
6 for Skills
1 for Potion
1 for Auto-Attack/Other
I would love another spot or two for... compainion scrolls... maybe a one button TP... maybe elixiers...

No idea why they're being so restrictive on the number of hotkeys allowed... But I guess we can live with 2-3 skills on mouse, 3-4 on keyboard and 1-2 potions on keyboard.

@galzohar: I think they do it so it ports easier to possible future console versions.
@BelushiEightyOneX: you never cast a TP when monsters are nearby and the same goes for a companion critter. Elixers are allowed though.

You can always cut keys back down for consoles. No need to make it more annoying for PC. They have specifically said they will not be doing stuff like that so I don't think that reasoning is what's really behind this.
