Footage of the monk is scarce. However, as someone who has been planning on playing a monk since the class was announced..I am underwhelmed. The monk seems feeble compared to every other class. Case in point, the animations are weak and I have yet to see the monk put up anywhere near the 110+ DMG single target that a barb has done.
I understand that he/she plays different than the barb, but the class feels gimped. Your thoughts?
Well, he is meant to balance out the barbarian's melee style which is pure brute force, so perhaps the hints of grace have soured you to him. Also, the fact you haven't personally seen him do huge damage is kind of silly. Not really the best way to judge the character.
If the biggest crit you've seen a barb do is 115, then the biggest crit you should see a monk do is like 35.
The barbarian hits hard, but slowly. The monk hits softly, but very very quickly. That's how it balances out in a very general sense. As long as they're able to kill things at the same speed with roughly the same amount of survivability (depending on gear and passives) then it's fine.
The monk is definitely not weak at all. He just does not have the DPS of a war machine like the barb or the wizard. He makes up for it with utility skills and mantras.
For example his low level heal does 96 hp heals aoe. That was spotted in a stream with a barb which had 211 hp (the barb was in party and immediately moused over to check his current max hp). The monk was level 8 and the barb was level 11.
Now seeing that health potions have a long 30 sec cooldown and health globes drop rate is not really high, I dare say the monk would survive better in the higher difficulty.
I wont go into the effectiveness of the mantras but the fact that only one mantra can be active at a time does kinda hint at how powerful/useful they will be eventually.
So what you're saying is, the Monk is working as intended?
I feel as if the barb is to kill the enemy really fast or die/run trying while the monk will chip away at the enemy overtime while not endangering himself.
For that reason and the AoE heal, I'll be playing a monk... as soon as I finish a Wizard.
I think its nice to talk about the game that we see right now. But we hardly can judge anything based on the facts that we know.
I always imagine that the Monk is like a carry in DOTA/HoN. Weak in the beginning, but when he starts to get spells and items, its gonna be an unstoppable killing machine.
