View Full Version : What has been your most pleasant beta surprise?

What is the one thing that has surprised you about the beta in the best way?

For me it has been seeing more of the "painterly" art style and how well it flows and transitions. I tend to prefer more realistic environments but they really hit the nail on the head with this.

Oh and if you're a beta tester you don't get to say "I'm in it!" as your pleasant surprise D:

When the wizard obliterates a large group of enemies, he says, "You dare attack me?" :)

The story telling is also a lot better than I expected. Everything just feels a lot more fleshed out with more involved NPCs and other random townsfolk hanging around saying stuff. Gives it a lot more of an RPG vibe.

One of the best things in Diablo and Diablo II are the music and ambient sounds. After hearing the Diablo III 'theme' song that was attached to most videos I was a little, for lack of a better word, worried. But after hearing the familiar twang of a bow, and the shuffle of a corpse being turned over, my worries have subsided. I believe they have hit the nail on the head with out the talent (I believe it was) Matt Uelmen.

The physics.

Watching already-slain enemies blast backwards when the wizard uses a skill near them.

I just hope they use GPU Physix not CPU ones. Since I still have an old Core 2 Duo E6700 with a 460 GTX :hang:

I doubt it. They previouly used Havok, but now they use their own physics engine as far as I know. Since they want D3 to run on a wide variety of computers it's unlikely that they will use GPU physics, because only nVidia's GPUs has a good API for that.

Also, your CPU will be perfectly good for running D3.

Yeah I know... I have to keep my physics on low/medium in SC2 ;_; They're lovely but eat to much CPU in big battles.

Then again I don't expect like 200/200 2v2 battles in D3 :)

Strange, I have a worse CPU (Athlon II x2 2.9ghz) but never had problems in SC2 with physics maxed. Anyway, this is off-topic, but I wouldn't worry about how D3 will run if I were you.

No stupid loading screens even after using the Stone of Recall. You also enter different zones really fast.

I dont think the physics will be all that demanding anyways though, its not like there full tilt all the time.

I do really enjoy watching the gravestones blow up though.

A scene in a barb video where he does leap attack from one level to the next. Little things like that are pleasant surprises.

First post! Hi Diablo Community!

My greatest surprise is the voice acting. I've expected a great game, visually, sound, skills etc. But what acctully took me off gaurd was hearing decard cain talk about the monsters and the lore. I hate reading pages of lore, but if they talk it to me! Hell yeah!

Leah is beautiful in the CG, but she is just too gorgeous in her ingame portrait. I think I'm in love.

I dunno, I think the "Damn that's smokin hot" honors belongs to the female DH based on her portrait. >.>

One of the things I have been happy with from watching F&F Beta videos is the level of references to the original Diablo, regarding plot, character and art design. I thought it was totally cool to see Adaria's hut again and the secret basement chamber. The design of the Tristram Cathedral, the erie classical acoustic guitar soundtrack also all throw me back to the early days of Diablo 1.

Leah is "damn that's smokin hot" in a cute way, female DH is "damn that's smokin hot" in a... cool way.

Yeah people have their own taste.

Hehe hell yeah my friend, i agree, also i enjoyed especially the physics, the way the enemies just blow up or thrown away in such a force, it's so awesome! and the music, just everything is pure awesomeness and epic! can't wait for the full game

I love diversity ..every zone, each random cave and monsters..it's awesome that it looks always a bit different. You are not bored by environment which is big + for me. and it's just first 1/3 of act 1.. can't wait to see what is after that.

This is a fair point haha :) Look at us being googly eyed over in-game pixels. Ahh, the joys of being nerds.

I must admit I'm pretty stoked to find out more about Adria since she was always an interesting character that didn't get much development in D1 or even via it's lore afterwards.

the loading times are amazing
you walk through a door into a dungeon and there you are, no waiting

For me it's the details in the environment and story telling. All the random NPCs with something to say, crows flying off, little things in the background, etc. It will make that first playthrough just amazing because I'll be taking my time checking out EVERYTHING, and it looks like there will be a TON of content to explore :)

Wow, a totally positive thread; and I didn't think it could be done (grin). Not having played yet, it seems to me that the health globes are really well implemented. I also dig the level (planned an already implemented) of game options. Sometimes I go back to LoD and am shocked at how little we could actually change (albeit more there then in vanilla D2).

But sadly the mouse you summon to pick up your gold will die after a matter of minutes :tombstone: So many innocent creatures.. summoned from their woodland homes only to be exploded.

On topic: Load times! I was very surprised that zoning had more or less zero load time.

For me probably the physics where one bash from Barbarian's Storm Hammer literally sent the corpses flying toward my screen, made me wish my 3D Surround gadgets were on me at the time, or if the game supports it,becaus it got some serious potential there.

My pleasant surprise...

Well, I think people hit a lot of what I really liked as well, but my unique surprised was how alive the world is. So often do we get used to a static environment, and we take for granted all of the nuances in the world.

I enjoyed the follow little bits:
Walking up the pathway towards Tristram Cathedral, I pass a hollow where 3 corpses sway lightly from the bough of a gnarled tree.

Entering the Forsaken Cemetery, ravens take flight due to my disturbance of the nightly silence.

I travel to Aida's hut, where the roof of a nearby house caves in.

It's small things like this that really add a sense of a living, breathing world. It's truly amazing.

It doesn't look as rainbowish as many thought. I think they tried to make the areas looks a little more Diabloish than WoWish. Which ofcourse is a good thing.

the sound has been my most pleasant surprise. I got a good set of headphones and messed with my sound settings and am now blown away with how far they went with the sound, adding every little creak to just make you that much more immersed!
