Can someone please Make a Character, and let me know if you can give it a last name? Something like Richter Scale or something like that. If it wont let you put in a space. See if it will let you make Richter_Scale.

If it does, try a longer name, I would like to know

1) Will it let you make last names

and

2) How many Character will a name support.

Thank you in advance!!!

No problem at all. Beta forums are giving an eta of 8 pst for servers to be back up. So about an hour from now.

I am PST so that's great. Is it sad that I am stoked to even be TALKING to people who are currently playing? lol. This game is going to be epic.

The game is really epic, so your excitement is understandable. It's awesome to be able to get some first hand info about it. I'm patching it now, so a soon as it's playable I'll log in and check. I don't need the full patch installed before I can check.

No spaces or special characters are allowed on bnet2 account names.

Siege Valgore
08-09-2011, 03:21
Yeah Im not talking about Account names, but actual playable Characters names. Like when you make a barbarian, and you give him a name.

Update for ya. They are now eta-ing the server for 9. So I'll still be checking for you when we are up and running again.

It's the same with character names.
But they're case-sensitive now, which is different. I could be "RisingRed" if I wanted to.

Ahhh okay. So no Last names...but you can put capitals where you want them. So now the question is, how many characters total?

That...I do not know. I don't even know what it is for SC2. For WoW I think it's like 12 or 13 characters.

I know that the password can be up to 42 characters long. But that helps nobody. >.>

Siege Valgore

Lol yeah im well aware of the character limit for WoW and SC2. I remember it was pretty long in D2. I was able to have Siege_Valgore and my buddy had Miss_Valgore so as long as the character limit is at least 13 characters, we are good :P I think I even had Ramades_Valgore

Risingred
08-09-2011, 04:03
What was it for SC2? I'd be willing to bet that it's about the same as that.

Kastigar

And they pushed back the time to 10pm, so you will be waiting even longer for a definitive answer to that part lol.

An interesting side note about naming though. I noticed on one of the internal builds I was lucky enough to see that there was a number next to characters names when joining games. So it'd say something like "Kastigar127" has joined the game. So this may be some kind of invisible way (at least invisible now) for you to have more name options.

So you may be able to name all your characters Steve if you wanted, and internally Bnet would track them differently. I'm not totally sure what the number was for, but it may have just been easier to store than to allow spaces and alternate characters.

Siege Valgore

Lol im sure they will push it back till 11 or 12 at this point. :P

As far as the 127 thing, im sure that has to do with the fact that anyone can name their character a name, even though it was already taken. the 127 is to make that name at least some what unique. So if Steve is already taken...and you name your character Steve, then your character will be named Steve1...or something. :P

Kastigar
08-09-2011, 04:14
exactly, so to you it looks just like steve, but to the DB storing characters it has the number attached to the end. I actually think that's pretty awesome, especially if they've removed some of the freedoms you had with naming from D2.

Risingred
08-09-2011, 04:14
Isn't that number just your identifier?

Siege Valgore
08-09-2011, 04:17
I dont know about you guys, but if YOU see Steve, but when I look at you, it says Steve832....thats pretty lame. The whole point of making a name is so when someone looks at you, they say "Whoa...that guy is bad ***"...adding a 294 to your name kind of takes away from the bad *** :P

Kastigar

I haven't seen it in this beta build, just to clarify and I've played with other people. I may have missed it, but I have a feeling it isn't something that is intended to be visible by other players. I cant think of much need for it to display to other people. If you named your Barb Steve, it should just show up as Steve.

That would be the hope anyways. In the parties I've been in though it just list character names as normal and I haven't seen the numbers since F&F started.

I'm just glad there is no more need for face rolling characters. Something about "wedasfktyxxxxxxxxxxxxx765uyagvaeatoihear8fh Just Joined the game" .... really took me out of the immersion of D2.

Alrighty servers are back! Names can only include letters, so no spaces, numbers etc. Character limit is 12 letters

how about non-ASCII characters

Could you make sure that this is the case? We already knew, that characters can have the same names between different accounts, but I'm not sure about chars on one specific account. It would make sense to make this possible though.

Kastigar
08-09-2011, 08:29
Yup, you can have all your characters named Steve one one account.

there's a screen of the character selection with Barb Kastigar and DH Kastigar.

Awesome, thanks.

By the way, you should send a mail to Elly, telling her that you're in the beta. She will add a tag to your name in the forums, so that people will know to whom they can listen to. :)

Let me just drop in to clarify on some of your speculations about those three-digit codes for people who are late to the discussion.

Kastigar's observations suggest Blizzard are using SC2's system of naming characters. There, a random three-digit code is added to your character name, and name-code pair is unique on a regional server. So, you can have up to one thousand Steves :)

The code is not displayed in the game, or gets in your way anywhere. It is dimly visible on character profile page, and you type it in whe you are searching for a person. Like, "yo ppl, is there anyone from Latveria, msg me in-game, i'm Killah#538 @ EU"...

P.S.: This is probably the only thing I can explain clearly, so... this is what I do :)

I wonder, how does the game differentiate characters with the same name in your friend list or in chat, if you don't use RealID? Does it display the account name beside the character's?

Kastigar
08-09-2011, 10:32
In D3 it's hard to say at present. The only method of friend-listing people is through RealID. I'm sure launch or maybe even future beta builds, will have something more robust, but for now that's all we have.

Siege Valgore

Only 12 Characters huh? That is a dissapointment. SiegeValgore just barely fits.

In SC2, friend list shows only character names (plus real names for RealID friends) and portraits. It is rare to have both names and portraits match, but I'd try to ask those guys to change portraits :-) If not, I guess the only way to tell them apart is to hover the cursor and check the code.

It is still unknown how D3 will handle RealID friends and their multiple characters... Maybe friends list entry will show real name, and when the person logs in, will show the current character? Seems reasonable to me.
Oh wait, it is known :-)
Kastigar, how does friends list look now? I mean, what data is shown for a single friend?
