View Full Version : Diablo 3 Beta server emultion project started
Found this while browsing the web, some people are working on a server emu for the diablo 3 beta client, don't expect much tho, give them a hand if you know how this works.
This project is probably not the only one, but I don't know of any others right now

Wouldn't this violate copyright, the way that d2 server emulation did for a particular mod? I'm a little fuzzy on how that all went down with the mod, server emulation and the lawsuit, someone more familiar?

yeah the problem is that they will have to emulate bnet2 and all game processes. Basically they will have to write the game code from scratch (everything server-side at least, which is drops, monster AI & movement, trading, basically any interaction)

True, but if you just want an empty sandbox, you can fill it with scripts that point to empty values (for drops) or a single "room" repeating (for map generation) once you figure out how to do that. The scripts don't have to be accurate, just have some value that doesn't cause the game to crash. I don't pretend to understand the undertaking, but they don't need to completely rework what Blizzard has done in full.
More trouble then its worth imo, plus blizzard will be sending cease and desist letters faster then the speed of light if it gets traction i would imagine.
The proverbial "told 'ya so" to the people who were arguing with me about this issue. (But since no one likes a smart-*** I'll explain myself...)
Yeah this is technically more trouble than it's worth, and no one is expecting anything to mirror a real b.net server on any level, but the lengths people are going to go to play a shoddy half-assed version of a blizzard beta game is going to be very impressive.
Why do it? Because it can be done. And for some people it's a fun challenge. I can't wait to see what people come up with in the next couple of weeks.

It always amaze me how fast does topic with !I buy diablo beta ccount! closed. When the negative effect when buying beta account on blizard is nothing. While on the other side server emulator, even sandbox, has substantial effect on the profit. Yet that topic is here to discuss freely?
Emulating the authentication protocol won't be that hard since this has been worked on before for both WoW and SC2 (which use exactly the same protocol), plus in D3 the battle.net.dll isn't obfuscated which makes it easier to reverse engineer.
As for content, there will be a need for actual beta acces in order to get the actual content, and be able to serve it but that's a whole different story, and it'll surface eventually
This of course will violate the TOS and/or EULA.
