Auras as Temporary Buffs

I'm sorry, I'm dumb, auras are not permanent. That was old info. They're short, powerful buffs. They can absolutely be runed. Like all skills.

Given some of things said later in that thread about Barbarian shouts I'd expect to see a couple of the monk auras cut from the skills we know already and those get turned into rune effects.

In the demos the monk's dominate aura lasted 10min and gave a little indicator on the UI just above the hotkey frame I hope they leave that feature in.
