Wing Commander III and IV

I've been itching to play a real space sim that doesn't suck.

I'm debating between Freespace 2, these wing commander games and maybe tie fighter.

Which of those still holds up? There hasn't been a great space shooter/sim in a long time unless you count Eve Online (and I don't).

The only one I have is the ancient X-Wing game, but to me, it's total awesomeness!
