What is Mafia?
The game is played by a group of people, each playing the role of either a murdering mafia member or an innocent townsperson, along with a game moderator. At the beginning of the game, night falls, and the mafia family members become aware of each other (by communication from the moderator). They then choose a victim, and the moderator announces the death scene. When day breaks, the town must try to weed out the evil by lynching someone they suspect to be mafia. The game continues, alternating between night and day, until one side is eliminated.

I could imagine a number of different awards, such as separate awards for best town, mafia, serial killer and other third party players (and for that last award, I can imagine no one more deserving than inanefedaykin for his awesome jester win in the New Jersey game).

One award I would like to see is one for the funniest role claim. It would probably have to be a false claim, since if it were real the credit should not go to the player. I'll have to think about the games I've played to see if anyone ever claimed anything really absurd and hilarious.

Oh, and we definitely need an award for the longest unlynchable streak. It is time we settled this rivalry. I'll be doing some research on this...

I double checked the Futurama mafia game by the way. It turns out that Leo killed four people with her doomsday device. She gave it to Laarz, and everyone he interacted with or who interacted with him died. Gorny and korialstraz tried to investigate and steal from Laarz, and Laarz targeted FalconGK for kill. FalconGK would've thus died anyway, but technically Leo's doomsday device beat him to it.

In hindsight, yes, but it didn't seem that way to me at the start of the game. Added to that, at that time, people always assumed I would be NK'd on Night 0, so I was doubly suspicious for having lived to see Day 1!

I still think TC should be beaten with a 2-week old kipper for it. Just as a precaution :)

Meh. Gotta keep things fresh in the Mafia world IMO or things can just get stale. I thought it actually worked really well and turned out to be fun with the results, but I know those playing didnt care for it :). I need to think of my next crazy scheme, wont be as debilitating as 10 bus drivers or whatever. And I saved Noodle the embarasement of doing the busdriver thing and people hating it haha

I liked the multiple busdriver game design. I wasn't thrilled about the hidden codes but since I could decode them I wasn't too worried. I didn't like the "count the letters of your role PM" shenanigans.

P.S. - I second the idea of Most Confusing/Annoying Game Mechanic award. Nominees would be Bad Ash's multiple busdrivers or the infernal cryptography in the Futurama game.

Speaking of Texas (I guess I should say US) a friend of mine just now told me he is planning a trip to the states. Unfortunately with the trip being so close, I most likely can't save up enough money to go. But if I could, I'd do my best to make sure Texas would be on the list of places to visit! :nod:

Oh and I'll see about joining a a mafia game again in the not too distant future. Just have to get re-settled back at work, as I've just taken on a lot more responsibilities, so tons of new stuff to learn and everything. IE exhausted in the evening. But if there is a game hosted within... say 2 weeks time, I could probably join. Atm I'm just waiting for my new connection to be installed, so less gaming than normal.


Oh and not to go completely OT, did I saw an achievement for most trusted town player and best theorycrafter? With a vote placed on Feysal? If so count me in on that vote. Assuming my limited 2 game participation is enough to cast votes. :thumbup:

that's how i kinda learned what very little German i know. translated 95% of Rammstein songs and talked with foreign exchange students from Germany when i was in school. now, i still translate and i have a friend who speaks it pretty fluently.

just study their lyrics and get translations. don't recommend Google, but actual dictionaries or fan forums. talk to people who know German. you can do it. :)

I think it's best to just have multiple people on there and update it regularly or chose different awards that you can hand out every year with votes from every players. By the way, I got started on something I've intended to do for a while now... making a spreadsheet of the mafia games, and who played them. I'm just getting started, but for now the old games are there.

I intend to figure out things like who has played the most games overall, who has most consecutive games, and of course the whole unlynchable issue. For now, after checking 14 games, Gorny and Ankeli are in the lead for most games played. Marahumm has four games without being lynched, while ThunderCat has six. This will get interesting...

It was actually the funnest part of any game I've hosted was figuring it out. I made a rule early on it was first come first switched. Peeps were pissed when they found out they were all busdrivers, but I enjoyed it haha

The Gman role was infuriating for the Town, but a gift of life to the Mafia in the game. Ankeli at the best of times can obfuscate a Town team but this role was tailor-made to confuse and annoy the town. Treestump, anti-town, investigative abilities, protective abilities, it was a Swiss Army Nuke. I would have been extremely annoyed by that role had it not worked to my team's advantage.

The only reason I don't believe it belongs in the most-annoying category is that the holder of that award needs to annoy every team. My two cents and worth both of them. :)

First he claimed to be getting results from an informant. Then he claimed to be the informant. Then he claimed that he was Dog and a bodyguard. Then he claimed he was actually the combine advisor, had been saved by G-man and was receiving results on who the headcrab was infecting. Hmm... did he make the claim about the headcrabs before claiming advisor? Any others I missed?


Most overpowered 3rd party: G-man, but I'm not sure I can call him the most irritating. Cults in general are pretty irritating.

Most annoying role seems too subjective to be an award. It's something that can't really be argued for or against unless you start sending out ballots to judges. That said, G-man absolutely positively deserves to be on the short list. I'd also nominate the robot cop with encrypted post restriction from All My Circuits. I wasn't even playing mafia games then, but I was about ready to jump in the thread and start asking questions just to break the code.

I'd like to be put on the mod list, if possible. I like running games, and ran a few off site (on a forum that doesn't exist anymore annoyingly ¬.¬). I also have a vampire themed mafia set up ive been working on for a while that I'd love to acctually run.

I of course understand that i'd have to wait my turn to mod, that's fine.

I've been working on a "The Thing (1982)" based game for a while now and I think I've got enough mechanics worked out that I feel comfortable with being put on the mod list too (after Riyeh of course ;)). think of it this way, Rlyeh. it's YOUR game and you can do whatever the hell you want. Bad Ash had nothing but bus drivers for one of his games and my games tend to be easy. i think the one rule we like to have is balance. some don't do that, but each to his/her own. :)

Sanity issues on cops is fairly common. I think there might have been a doctor or two that weren't told they were cpr docs but those are less common. We've even had a few cops that had sanity issues but were guaranteed a sane result on self-investigation. But I don't care for roles of that sort, IMO if you don't want the cop to be able to find out their sanity through self-investigation just don't let them self-investigate.

But as Leo said, you can run your game how you see fit.

Ah Ive ran games before off site, and I get obsessed with balance, tweaking things for days until it sits right. Thing is I like dumb roles, like PGO, CPR Doc, Dentist ect, I just know some sites get annoyed by them (same with hidden abilities, like a priest with Xshot resurect can't cast a hammer vote but he doesn't know that, or an inventor can make items to mail people but doesn't know what they do.)

An in joke of mine is "lynch all jesters" even though I would never use that role (Jester: You win the game if you get lynched) as it's too easy to win with them.

I'm currently developing a new set up anyway, as the vampires one I was going to run was a little boring.

I will say I usually don't mind any role being in a game. EXCEPT: Some 'bastard' mods on mafiascum.net do things like put a deputy into a game (becomes a cop when the cop dies) but doesn't put a cop into the game.

I also saw a game where one guy had a quad-vote ability, double vote/triple vote is cool, but 4x votes is just silly. Mid/late game you can lynch someone by yourself.

Heh, I just thought of something that would be fun: Pathological Liars!! They could be of any alignment (they can't help themselves, after all), they could start out that way, be turned that way, or have a temporary (1 day) bout of it. The only stipulation would have to be that in every post they make, they must tell at least 1 lie. It would be a total pain to mod that, but sounds like a fun concept! Has anyone experienced a role like that?

Regarding all other awards, I think it would be best if, from now on, I'd added only those who receive the acknowledgement of at least two more people (for those that don't refer to specific numbers). Thoughts?

Either change the setup into a category of record keeping, longest game, most players, i.e. And one for actual awards, best town performance, best mafia perfomance, i.e.

Lol, all this vampire talk actually got me thinking! How about a "Vampire All-Stars" game?! Put together as big a list of vampires from popular culture as possible and put them in the same game, with a couple humans in for good measure (but NO WEREWOLVES!!!!) Sounds like a fun idea to me, though I would be grossly unqualified to put together something like that, not the most dedicated vampire hobbiest out there. Since there are more villain vampires than good guys, we could have it to where the mafia are actually vampire slayers! Let's see here:

Town (aka evil vampires and human cronies):

Dracula's 3 lady friends
Deacon Frost
Lestat
2-3 Human Familiars
Tons more, my imagination/memory is farting out atm...

You could also swap day and night, to where everyone talks during the 'night' (which lasts 48 hours), and the mafia acts and kills during the 'day' (lasting 24 hours).

Opinions: Would you guys like to play in a Wine In Front of All type game? It's basically a game that all the roles are listed, and in a lottery type fashion you choose what role you want to play as. If that role has already been selected by someone before you, then you get Vanilla.

The trick is that you get to know if you're town or scum before you pick your role. So the scum could pick up godfather for protection, or pick up the cop so the town doesn't have it. Assuming someone else didn't pick it up already, that is...

It is in no way guaranteed to be balanced, but it's a game chock full of "Well, what if he did this..."
