View Full Version : When the game comes out, will you...?

1) Play the single player campaign fully first (several times)?
2) Go straight to multi-player online (hardcore or not)?
I myself am going for number 1 but I'll constantly nag myself (to death) that there are folks online who do way cooler stuff!
So, I don't know how long I'll hold out before going online...
Multiplayer for sure, why wouldn't you go for it? Essentially single and multiplayer will have the same content, i think. I seriously don't understand why some people refuse to play multiplayer games even when it's the main focus of the game. It's like playing chess or football alone, no fun. But once you try some game with other people you will never appreciate single player as much, that is exactly what happened to me with D2. D2 was the very first multiplayer experience i had and i never played D2 single player after that.

Hum... the difference is not clear to me. Are we even sure there will be a possibility to play without an internet connection? In SC2, I enter my login and password before being able to play the solo campaign and the progress are stored on my BN account. I do not even know if there is a way to play without being connected to BN anymore.
Anyway, for D3, I will play only on the internet even at the beginning. I do not want to restart over a character I like just to have a Battle.net version of this character. At the beginning I will play solo games on BN to discover the game (or with some friends if they buy the game the day it comes out like me).
If there is some sort of LAN multiplayer, I will probably do that. If not, I'll have to go for battle.net...
If there is a multi-player identical to single player, I definitely always choose the multi-player. Single player is kinda lonely, especially if you have someone on your local area network to play with ;)
I just can't help the "so what" feeling I get when I SP.
I just got an awesome drop! So what? If I can't show it off, who cares? :)

Definitely multi-player. Single-player just limits what you can do with your time spent. Why would I run through the game in single-player just to say "I've beaten the game, now I'll get on multi-player beat the game again so I can finally try out some PVP."
Besides I have a bunch of friends who are going to play this game as well. Multi-player has always been the core focus of diablo games for me and D3 will be no different.

I avoid multiplayer online in all games, because people I've met there have tended to be narrow-minded morons who look down on anyone who plays the game differently from them. I find it only takes one online argument to put me off a game for months.
I'll be buying three copies of the game to take home and play through with my two younger brothers - an expensive way to play but better than playing singleplayer or with strangers online.
You can play multiplayer with or without other people. For example in D2 you could solo the whole game and trade items with other people, actually that is the whole point of D2 and that is what most active players still do. You solorun meph/baal etc then trade those items for other players. In singleplayer it is simply impossible to obtain the best items since you really need to trade them from other people. Hopefully D3 will be just the same. So far blizzard have commented that you should be able to solo the whole game if you want to, if i'm correct.

when i first get the game i am gonna jump on bnet, make all 5 or 10 or whatever of my characters then lock my self in a passworded game for a few weeks only to come out if some friends are on and want to group. i will not play any of the story with anyone else until i have beat the game myself first. i will do it online though in a locked game so when i am finished i will still have that character.
i see no point in sp when you can play mp alone and i hate going straight to multi cause i actually care about the story and you are rushed in a multi game

I used to play all my games in singleplayer first before moving on to multiplayer, but i think ill make an exception with diablo 3 this time - just for the hell of it :)
btw you can play starcraft 2 without an internet connection, its called offline mode.

When D2 first came out I had to play singleplayer because I didn't have broadband and 56k net bills discouraged longer online sessions. By the time I got broadband, I had learned that D2 MP muling sucked terribly (D2 single player allows third party muling applications) and MP had some other limitations in general that made MF runs harder (game creation limit, non-persistant maps) so SP was still the better alternative.
Provided D3 makes MP more user friendly, I'll definitely start playing that first. Otherwise SP will be the way to go.
I seriously don't understand why some people refuse to play multiplayer games even when it's the main focus of the game. It's like playing chess or football alone, no fun.
You do mean playing chess or football on the computer, right? Otherwise your analogy doesn't make sense. There's a number of reasons to play vs the AI instead of people - e.g. smoother learning curve, easier to organize, AI is more forgiving to gameplay interruptions on your part due to RL reasons etc - so I can definitely see why some people prefer it.

Well, no. Irl.
D3 won't have such an sophisticated AI like in SC2 for example, diablo is all about how many monsters you are against. I agree that in some games it's easier for new players to train their skills against AI, just like in SC2. But the main thing in diablo series is that you are always killing monsters most of the time and there won't be any steeper learning curve in multiplayer, it will be exactly the same just like in singleplayer. Except that in multiplayer you are going to kill monsters with your friends, which you know, is more fun.

killing in groups in not considered more fun to everyone. i like a good group game but i also like to solo a bit. either way my character is on the server and ready for either. sp still has its place and for me that place is when the servers go down i can still play. when d2 launched the servers went down fairly often or at least often enough for me to actually get to a good level with my sp char
Yeah exactly, the only reason i can see why someone would choose singleplayer before multiplayer is that he or she isn't capable of connecting into bnet. I will be most likely going to solo also but i'm going to do it in multiplayer with my own pace. Propably when i finish normal difficulty i'm going to play with people the rest of the game, altho there might be some tougher quests/boss encounters along the way which you might want to do with friends anyway.

In my previous post I forgot to mention that one of the reasons I ultimately chose D2 SP over MP was because many of the people I met on b.net turned out to be morons. Not having to deal with them, in addition to avoiding MP-related technical issues, was a good reason to go SP at the time.
While I know D3 will significantly reduce players' griefing ability, I also know it would take a lesser miracle to turn the average b.net user into someone you'd really enjoy playing together with.

What if ALL toons are stored on your Battle.net account (max = X). Hacking your toons wont be possible (if bnet secured it good). Would you still go for MP over SP...?

I always play SP before playing with anyone else, but with D3, I think I'll just do that in MP private games so I'll still have the character(s). I like to be able to absorb the story and read through everything carefully, do all the quests thoroughly, etc. Basically do the whole game complete without people rushing through, jumping ahead, completing stuff while I'm busy trying to enjoy and experience the creation that is a new game.

1) Check out all the characters in single player
2) Choose the right character
3) Then go for multi-player!!!!!

I'll make all my MP characters to insure I get the names I want, then play through SP once so I can enjoy the story at my own pace.
After that I'll jump into MP.
