View Full Version : diii.net ad problems
Whats with the stupid amount of advertsing on the site now?
Yesterday found i cant click any blank space on the sides without changing pages.
Now i can even view diii.net at all because of the 'loadlng' advertisement just loops and wont load diii.net....
awesome work

Way to thank all the people who run this website, good job.
If you dont like ads then just become a PAL.

I think that whatever minor inconvenience the ads may be, they are more than balanced, far more, by the amazing amount of content put out by the staff, and if it is really that bothersome, go somewhere else. Good luck finding a site this passionate, knowledgeable and legitimate. Then find one that does not feature relentless spam ads and suspicious ad partners.
Hmmm. Can't say I don not feel like the OP. Even though I have been 'using' this site from the early development of DiabloII, the current ads are VERY annoying. Not enough to push me away, because I do not know another site that is as good as this, but still annoying.
It does give a funny twist to this post from Flux yesterday in the thread about what would you do for a beta-key:
"I'd spend a decade working mostly for free on a diablo fan site. Oh wait..."
So that "Oh wait..." means Flux thought:
A. I already do that
B. I don't work for free, I get money from the adds.
No offence to Flux or anybody else from me though. As we all know, adds are a way to finance a good site like this one and my thanks go to all those who put so much effort in it. Wouldn't mind at all if they made a good income for themselves along the way.

Um...what....ads? I see a small PayPal verified icon...other than that nothing.
Well 'spam' isn't fair by a long shot. We have a skin on the main site (not forums) and that is clickable obviously so if you want to click on some part of the page to clear you cursor (I do the same) then just click on the page and not the background. I had to get used to doing that too as I instinctively shoot out to the sides and click the background which sounds like what you do.
There is an interstitial that loads once every 24 hours per url and that is controlled by your cookies - as long as you don't delete cookies. Banners do nothing unless you roll over them or click on them. You have to interact with all the ads for them to do or go anywhere.
As someone has pointed out the adverts are the main way we are able to keep these sites online, have been since forever. If people block them we can't pay the bills and I don't need to tell you what happens when bills aren't paid.
I understand the need for advertising, and not to take away from the hard work that definitely goes into this site, but the ad the OP mentions is intrusive and aggravating. I finally figured out not to click anywhere on the page unless it was a link to where I wanted to go, but that was after a lot of frustration.
Also, many of us are on extremely tight budgets, so becoming a PAL really isn't an option.
I'm fully aware of the fact why you have to run adverts and I don't have a problem with it either, but I can understand why the OP is frustrated, because I was caught in that ad-loop several times too, not being able to access the homepage for hours... :fire:

Yep, I hear you on tight budgets, we're in exactly the same boat.
I have to disagree on the advert being intrusive as it's just a background image and if, like me, you are used to clicking on the sides of a page (which is usually just an unlinked background) to 'unclick' your cursor then just click on the page instead which is what I do now. It's not a massive inconvenience to click in the middle of the page somewhere rather than on the edge.
I don't know anything about a loop though. That sounds very buggy. So it just takes you to another site then refreshes back to this one and so on?

Exactly. When I browse to Diii.net there's sometimes the full site movie ad with a skip-this-page-button on the upper right and a timer. Whether the movie is skipped or watched until the timer hits zero doesn't matter, because while the Diii.net site is loaded I'm almost instantly redirected to the movie ad. I experience this "bug" under WinXP as well as with Ubuntu 8.04 (Opera 10 / Firefox 3.0.1.4). :scratchchin:
"Ubuntu 8.04"
Strewth, what on earth is that? That is a new one to me.

A pretty popular Linux based operating system. ;)

Same here. I can't enter Diii.net sometimes... just loops that ad all the time. Right now it seems to be doing that. I have a direct link to this forum though.
I am using Firefox on Mac OS X.

Like I said before, become a PAL. Best decision ive ever made in my life
I don't usually complain about ADs, they're part of every site and they get stuff paid. However I need to point out I also had this problem of one AD loading itself over and over again to a point I could not read the news I wanted (blog entries to the left). Of course I don't get mad about it but it might drive some people off.
Edit/update: it is happening now, I can't enter the main page because the AD keeps refreshing itself times over. I need to search google to enter the forums. Help?

If you guys use firefox (which you all really, really should), there is a add-on called AdBlock Plus that you can download that will remove almost every add from every site you visit. I haven't seen one ad on this site thanks to that add-on.

You aren't allowed to block the ads on this site nor are you allowed to suggest that others ad block them. It's as Elly pointed out: The ads pay the bills so therefore they must show on your browser in order for the revenue to be generated so that this site can stay up and running.
I can understand problems and bugs with ads that are not supposed to happen in the first place (and the Admins will look into things like this if they are brought to the attention of the Admins), but flat out blocking the ads is a no-no, plain and simple.
It's in the rules that you agreed to when you signed up and became a member here.
Doing so (blocking them and suggesting the same) is cause for a ban.

My sincere apologies. I must not have read that rule while going through them (looking back on it, this seems like common sense and I should have just assumed this was a rule until I found actual mention of it). I will turn off my adblocker for this site and cease any further mention of it.

I'm all for keeping the internet free and not just comprised of networks with very deep pockets who can afford to run sites at a loss. We can't. We're an independant site with very shallow pockets and so the impact of blocking the advertising we do manage to secure is great.
As Gorny said though, we don't book problematic adverts so if you see any please do bring it to our attention.
Now it's the Torchlight ad that loops for me. Can't enter this site, other than sneaking in via the forums.

I find the intrusive ones get dealt with in time, so they are only a hassle once or twice. For instance, the Torchlight "loop" only happened once for me and now all is back to normal. There was a cosmetic product ad that always activated itself with sound, but that got fixed too.

Having the exact same issue, as is my boyfriend. We've tried to get past it repeatedly, but nothing helps. :(

I'm having this same issue. Whether or not I wait the 30 seconds or click to continue manually I always get redirected back to the advertisement page.
Maybe you guys need to log the sessions of visitors "in the cloud" to determine if someone has already seen the ad - instead of relying on cookies, which many browsers and anti-malware programs block (but in my case I am allowing all cookies - so I have no idea what the cause of the issue is for me).
I am also experiencing the ad looping issue and cannot enter the site. Have any of the admins updated on this issue? Its funny how they instantly reply to a post about ad blocking however don't address the original issue in this thread? PLEASE HELP :(
Me too. Fails in Firefox 3.5, and in IE7.
Though thanks too Visual Studio Debugger it let's me continue to the site.
No disrespect to diii.net, but I'm getting very annoyed with torchlite as a product.
Seriously guys what is going on here, I still cannot get into your site!
Your acquisitions for the touchlight campaign must be through the roof!
Please can you provide some insight into what the heck is going on!
Thanks,!

We are aware of the problem and it should be resolved. The issue is the cookie not setting properly in your browser. You may need to clear the diii.net ad cookie and it should all be fine.

the "columns" link isn't working properly, if I could click that and have a list of columns on a differ page then the add wouldn't be such a problem. but yeh, get the add to not cover the drop down lists

Add me to the list of folks who cannot access your site because of the stupid ad that takes over and keeps looping.
It's been something like two weeks now since I've been able to access this site...and I (used to) check it every day.
I understand the need for ads. But having one that takes over is enough to have the opposite effect. And especially if it's an ad that is causing problems like this...I'd think not using that method until the bugs are worked out is a logical option...
Or at least having very clear instructions on this site how to avoid this loop...
We've made a couple of tweaks today which should solve it. If you still get the looping problem can you clear any cookie with the ip 89.107.69.67 and what that should do is reset the cookie so when you load the page again you should get the interstial ad but it should operate as intended. i.e let the vid play and then it auto directs to the news page or you hit 'Skip Ad' on the top right of the page and go direct to news page yourself.
If not, please let me know. elly at incgamers dotty com

Is it possible to change the layout for the ad format so none of the dropdown menus are hiding behind the flash? I know in some css elements you can change the level of how things stack, not sure if it works with flash embedded in div or not.
