first off, if youre not legit (dupes, hacks) it doesnt matter what your legit find is, as you can just kill monsters faster... that being said-
I had a very nice find tonight. I was playing on my naked mage (who doesnt use items obviously, nor sells them for profit) and found an ammy.. so I decided to identify it and it was.. .. a zodiac ammy! +20 to all!!! I wish it was an obsodian zodiac, but still a sweet find nonetheless. I found it in normal/hell lvl 15
so heres my alltime best find list-
1.naj plate
2.zodiac ammy
3.mess. reaver
what are your best finds??

I only managed to find a Mess Reaver once and I loved it to bits!

I remember that I had a dragon's ring of zodiac with 59 mana and 20 all stats.
To be honest it was years ago, but I still remember it :-)

I just got back into playing D1 since I was getting bored of D2 (hopefully 1.13 changes that). My first time through the game, I lucked out and found Naj's plate really early on; somewhere in the Cats... don't remember which level though. I want to say level 7?
I'm playing Hellfire, though. Does that change the drop rates?
EDIT: second time through and I've found a Dreamflange and a Royal Circlet. Best non-unique find so far is probably my Obsidian Amulet of the Tiger (38% resist all, 47 HP).

I don't think I've quite found every unique in the game, but almost all but a couple. I've found multiple (5+) Naj's, Thinking Caps, Demonspike Coats, Messy Reavers, Stormshields. But only 1 dreamflange and 2 royal circlets ever - go figure.
Never found a prefixed Zodiac jewelery, but found 7 suffixed, 3 of them being perfect 20s.
Best item was probably and Awesome Full Plate of the Stars, +9 stats, can't remember the AC on it but it was towards the low end of the possible range, which was a pity.
I'm playing through the game again. so far the best finds (I'm a level 16 warrior) are a "warrior's sword of maiming" that I bought from Griswold (+16% to hit, 64% dmg, adds 5 points to dmg"), an "amber mail of the eagle" (20 all resist, 30 life), an "amber shield of Vim" (18 all resist, +12 vit) and my helm, "Valiant crown of the wolf" (59% armor, 37 life).
btw as a warrior, should I even be focusing on +life items? I figured it would help me early on (my lvl 16 warrior has around 200 life now :P) but does it make that much of a difference later on if you have 350 or 400 life?

cool finds guys... I think Ive gotten the Naj more than once as well.
-----
I would rec. you finding something with life steal instead, and then just working on the dex instead to get your hit % high (so youre always killing plus healing) and dex would also go to your AC, which is important to get really strong with. great start youve got going

heres a good (more common/easy to find)unique with life steal... Ive found it a few times.
SHADOWHAWK
# Damage: 4-12
# Hit Steals 5% Life
# +15% To Hit
# +5% Resist All
# -20% Light Radius
the negative light radius is also a plus IMO, as less can see you.
I found Helm of the Stars once and I was actually using it quite some time until I decided to start using Goddamitsdark due negative light radius, making it easier to scout areas without making enemies go so easily off at range.

Man i use to play so much in middle school. I think ive pretty much found all of the uniques: windforce, grandfather, eaglehorn, stormshield, royal circ, mes, etc.
Found severl zodiacs
By constantly shopping at gris i found kings sword of speed and kings axe of speed which are much better than grandfather and mes. Idk if its possible to buy the haste ones for gris in the bastard 6-15 sword or w/e the highest axe is called. I read something about it costing too much...and not having enough room in the inventory for those or something.
I'm actually thinking about playing D 1 again. I forget though...can u hit alt to search the ground for items....for some reason i remember having to sweep the groun with the mouse manually in D1 :(
*edit and yes hellfire changes lots of things...including shopping. Makes shopping for items way easier. Idk why anyone would want to play hellfire and i consider it the same thing as duping/cheating.
* and i forget...D1 saves to the computer right? doesnt that mean if ur comp crashes u lose all ur D1 stuff? that would suck.

just found the Naj Puzzler staff.... thinking it would be fun to try to get an all-Naj set.
I've been trying to find a grandfather or windforce for days, but imagine my surprise when last night after years and years of playing, I found a PERFECT obsidian ring of the zodiac! Put that baby on right away!

Definitely worth more than a grandfather or windforce, congrats!
Definitely worth more than a grandfather or windforce, congrats!
For sure. I would gladly give away my windforce and my eaglehorn for that ring (and maybe even the royal circlet I found the other day). I've been looking for resist gear for my warrior for ages now, but the best I've found so far is an 19% all resists ring.
The game is getting very hard now on hell mode, because my AC is around 200 (kinda on the low side, no?) and I have next to no resists. I wish I found at least one obs ring (doesnt even need to be zod) as that would help a lot. Wirt for some reason is refusing to sell awesome full plate mails or anything resembling a high defense item. and so is grisworld, which makes my diablo sessions kinda like:trying hell, getting frustrated, trying shopping run, getting frustrated, quit to try again tomorrow.

I'm not sure that Wirt can offer Awesome FPM, and I know that Gris certainly can't.
The best way to find general items is to do Normal diff Laz runs, because dlvl 15 can drop FPM and the other high end ilvl items, as well as the high qlvl affixes. Make sure you kill Bloodlust, and I'd also usually take a quick trip down (with a sorc) to dlvl 16 and kill Gorash too, because they're both mlvl 35 and can drop Holy/Emerald prefixes. Doing this on Normal difficulty is a breeze, although you don't get much exp from it.

Didn't you mention you were playing Hellfire? They can sell Awesome Plates in Hellfire with suffixes (best imo is lion +60 hp - with perfect Awesome will cost 186000) and if I'm not mistaken they can sell awesome plates in Diablo also but either without a suffix or only a couple crappier ones. Don't give up!
As for hell, are you using a sword (king's or + to hit and damage) of haste/speed? That makes a huge difference. It's also important to engage only 1 or 2 enemies at a time which involves crafty use of walls. Though without resists you may want to skip floors with 2 types of casters. Are you playing single player? If so, grab the Veil of Steel from the Lachdanan quest. It's got 50% resist all. Oh and that reminds me...
If you are in single player here's an idea for some runs you could do....For levels 13 and 14 the game chooses either the Warlord of Blood Quest or the Lachdanan quest...never both. And if you get the Warlord of Blood Quest there are at least 2 armor racks for you to forage while on 13, plus 1 of the monsters on the floor is going to be Steel Lords which give great experience (singleplayer), but in any case should cause you less trouble than casters. If you don't see steel lords on 13, on 14 you are guaranteed Blood Knights! Best xp you could hope for - just don't let them hit you. And since you didn't have the Warlord Quest on 13, Lachdanan will be on 14. So then you clear 14 and you can check to see what spawned on 15.
2x melee? = bonus floor + lazarus
1x melee, 1x caster = up to you if its worth it
2x casters = new game!
I would skip 16 until you have max fire resist, lots of hp, a sword of haste and salsa dancing lessons to dodge the fireballs or the advocates are gonna make you uninstall. :jig:

Well i'm playing multiplayer regular diablo (not hellfire) so no veil of steel for me ¬¬
my gear is as follows:
King's bastard sword (+99% to hit, 155% damage, 6-15 base dmg) no suffix
Helm of Spirits (I need to wear the Royal Circlet to have high AC, but on lower levels I find the lifeleech better. besides it took me forever to find that helm so I'm keeping it :P)
Saintly plate of the Lion (128% armor, +60 life, base defense 46)
Blessed Shield of the Tiger (100% armor, +50 life, base defense 14)
Ring of Perfection (+30 dex)
Ring of the Heavens (+12 all attributes)
Ivory Amulet of the stars (resist magic 34%, +9 all attributes)
I also have a royal circlet, a king's mace of the heavens (does less dmg than my king's bastard... should I use it anyway for the attribute boost?), an Obsidian Full Plate mail of sorcery (71 def, 38% all resist, 19 to magic) and an obsidian Shield of the Tiger (17 def, 34% all resist, +42 life)
If the solution to find obsidian jewelry is to do normal lazarus runs, I think i'll equip the full plate mail and the obsidian shield. that paired with the helm of spirits should make me able to survive properly to do the runs
Btw all that gear (except for rings/amulets/uniques) is shopped. I'm currently at clvl 33. at which clvl I have the best odds of getting a king's <whatever> of haste/speed from griswold/wirt? am I too late to get one reliably?
Well congrats on the Helm of Sprits! So no multiplayer for you which rules out most of what I said above. But you do have the advantage of quicker lazarus runs than single player - which is your best bet to improve your gear in regular Diablo. Really you just want to kill as many unique monsters in as short a time as possible, so look for ways to improve your run time. Obviously the biggest improvement you can make is teleport - which if youre a warrior is not overly practical.
Also you can familiarize yourself with where the unique monsters can appear. That is to say if Snow Witches spawn on level 13, you will always find the unique snow witch, "Witchmoon" on that floor. But if they spawn on level 14, you can head straight to the stairs. Let me give you a quick off-the-top-of-my-head list.
Monsters that spawn on 13 which will have a unique:
Maelstroms
Vortex Lords
Slayers
Snow Witches
Doom Guards
On 14:
Steel Lords
Doom Guards
Hell Spawns
Magistrates
On 15:
Hell Spawns
Cabalists
But keep in mind the time you spend searching for these uniques must not outweigh the total run time for killing Lazarus. As for the mace, it shouldn't make a big difference in normal difficulty and marginal in Nightmare and Hell. The main benefits being the extra hit points and the extra armor from Dex boost, should not be overly significant when monsters that do hit you are hitting you with magic or a big ole sword meaning at least 50 hp of damage.
As for the King's Sword of Haste, there is no upper limit to buying that so you just need patience and luck. And there aren't too many other prefixes and suffixes that interfere with the odds of King's and Haste being selected. After level 31 there is no difference in what Griswold or Wirt sells you.
Low Obs/Zod ring a really long time ago. I forget what the exact stats on it were, though. Think I found it in nm/hell around level 40.
Also I found a Helm of Sprits on my first ever boss run in nm/cath. I had a friend who had run it 500+ times and never seen the helm drop, so I traded it to him since I didn't have a warrior.

Can't remember if I bought it or found it, probably found it, but my findiest find on single-player was Saintly full plate of the lion. As far as multiplayer goes, it was probably that Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac. Wasn't a 20 though, but still, nice. There's a reason it was always duped. Well, except this one.
*edit and yes hellfire changes lots of things...including shopping. Makes shopping for items way easier. Idk why anyone would want to play hellfire and i consider it the same thing as duping/cheating.
Because Hellfire was more Diablo and Na'Krul was awesome, duh. I'll never forget that guy. Although I'm not seeing the correlation between spending 30 bucks (at the time) for an expansion and duping, really.
Last time I played some months ago I made a sorc and found all the best gear (dreamflange, royal circlet, stormshield) plus eaglehorn and other uniques in like a few dozen lazarus runs. lol

Well, returning to Diablo (far better than D2 imho). Been playing for the past week and a half and now lvl 32 (nearly 33). Have found so far (I'm playing a warrior, multiplayer):
Awesome Plate - AC67, +141%
obsidian shield of the tiger - AC16, resist all 35%, +42 hit points
obsidian ring of the stars - resist all 35%, +10 to all attributes
Garnet ring of the heavens - resist fire 49%, +14 to all attributes
Amulet of the zodiac - +19 to all attributes
Awesome helm of the whale - AC8, +142%, +99 hit points
Kings sword (bastard sword) - +77% to hit, +173% damage.
In this run, I've also found:
ring of wizardry - +29 to magic (i've found 2 of them lol!)
amulet of wizardry - +27 to magic
sword of sorcery - +20 to magic
helm of sorcery - +20 to magic
some shield that gives me +12 to magic (best you can get from memory)
some armour that gives me +20 to magic
So my warrior can so far read up to 208. I'm still hunting for perfect rings/amulet of wizardry so I can read up to 212 and max out a few books that need 212.
I've also found 'the grandfather', 2 unique rings (one was the ring of engagement, can't remember the name of the other one, was crappy imho though). I've found quite a few uniques, more than I ever had before. I'd never played with v1.09 patch before, perhaps it's more forgiving?
In the past I've found the royal circlet several times, and I've also found a kings sword of haste (Griswald believe it or not, 94k), bastard sword version. I've also found kings sword of gore, kings sword of slaughter, kings sword of speed and kings sword of the stars before. I've found dragons ring of the zodiac a few years back too. I've *never* found a obsidian ring of the zodiac, the best I've found is a obsidian ring of the heavens (+15) several years back. I've seen a legit godly plate of the whale too, but it was low end plate, not high AC, so was pretty crappy. I've never seen a godly helm of the whale or godly shield of the whale. Not sure if they exist legit wise.
Like many, I played diablo back "in the days" circa 97 via bnet. Many good memories. I do admit to using a legit character, but hacked items (the usual ones, we all know what they are). My original character made it to lvl 46, nearly lvl 47 before I got bored. I did back up the character to a floppy disk, but sadly, said floppy disk failed and I was never able to retrieve this character. :( Likewise, I had probably 600+ items saved to floppy disks - I'd find them in game and use a trainer to export the .itm files. I didn't trade, I usd this as a personal method of item storage to show which items I'd found. Those floppies are all dead as well :(
ah what memories.
Has anyone got any tips for finding obsidian rings of the zodiac etc? I've tried to read Jarulf's guide but it's just double dutch to me lol.
Cheers,
Dave

I've found that one a few times in the past, but not yet with the current character. Good find, it's not common from my experience.

Just shopped a Massive Bow of Swiftness (109%) after literally 10 hours of shopping runs. I knew they were rare, but my god...So happy.:whistling:
I cant remember as its been over 10 years since ive played diablo. But i used to play it alot and hang out in the DSF channel and play with the legit community ^_^
I found an obs/zod ring, the best find i ever had. Was perfect zod but its obs stat was kind of low. I still remember finding it though. Identifying all the things i found~ seeing those words pop up on the screen: "Obsidian Ring of The Zodiac". My heart skip a beat~ My computer also broke shortly after ;-; all things are transient~
I also found an almost perfect KSoH but it was a broadsword.

ton of other stuff i didnt list, but these would be my favorites and almost everything here is used by one char or another of mine. Some of it is just really nice statted stuff sitting on mules. I guess the only thing I want now is a Gold Ring of the Heavens with similar stats to my amulet, preferably +25 to hit and 15 aa is a must (I have two lower rings). If anyone here finds such a ring, I have some fair statted Obsidian Zod jewels on a mule that I dont use, just collecting dust, maybe some other goodies too.

My chars use alot of those listed items. Some of the others ive either given away or muled. This game is like crack in cd form. Ive been extremely addicted to it over the years and it was my mission to build near perfect chars.
Does negative light really effect the monsters viewing you?
Yup. If you get -80% (the max, or min depending on how you look at it), the monsters won't see you until you're right next to them. However, if your light radius changes at all on a dungeon level, the awareness level will stay at the maximum you've had for that level. So if you have two Rings of the Dark (-40% each) they won't see you until you're right next to them. But if you take one of them off and put it right back on, they'll see you from the -40% range which isn't nearly as good.
Just started playing D1 again for the first time since I was in like Jr high or something, now browsing this forum for the first time ever.
Got a SP warrior up to lvl 32 now in Hellfire, no power shopping. I have mostly crappy gear, but just have to mention this little gem I found recently... I think it was Laz that was so kind to drop it:
Obsidian Rags of Sorcery (38% resist all, +20 to magic, 3 AC)
I got a pretty good laugh out of that one... haha... now why can't I find mods like that on decent gear or a ring!?!?

Awesome cape of the stars

I've never found a single decent item.
This thread makes me want to play again. I hope to god my 25 sorc isn't deleted again. Christ, starting over drives me insane. I need a desktop shortcut to "update all my stupid characters in blizzard games".

I found a couple beauties recently: Dragons Amulet of the Zodiac, with stats 59/19, and one of my biggest holy grails ever, a Gold Ring of the Heavens 28/15!
Axe of Swiftness, in Diablo 1
It is the first time I am putting my hands on that, but I have bought the other day a basic bow of swiftness, which replaced the other bow I had from my other char since level 4.
It does nothing good except firing arrows at a nice rate, which I like and prefer over the other bows I have found in the past months.
I also have found the constricting ring, the demonspire coat, and the grand-father, which I all have put on my warrior. My rogue needs life, so I have given her life-related equipment.
My sorcerer sucks, which is explainable by the fact that all his spell levels are quite low compared to what they should be at his attained level.

Obs/Zod... from a barrel. On the PS1 version. I don't remember the stats, it was years ago. But Obs/Zod... from a barrel. Also things like Windforce + Royal Circlet in the same game on consecutive levels, some uniques that are useless but have a rarity in the hundreds according to Jarulf's guide, some decent AC armors I don't remember the stats of because I lost my old saves...
Grisword was selling (fifteen minutes ago) a Lord's Sword (4-12) of Speed, which I used to replace my Grandfather. Quite a lower damage, but heck, the speed adjustment makes up for it. I am not ready to switch for something other than haste and swiftness for future swords and bows. Talk of a gameplay change with that input-speed requirement...

I found this about a year ago, as far as I know it's one of the best swords in the game, if it were of "Swiftness" instead of "Speed" it woulda been the absolute best, not counting stat variance:
http://i51.tinypic.com/2n20846.jpg
Nope. That's the best sword. Speed is better than swiftness. It is the same as haste but cheaper with repair costs. So that's the best you can get aside from stat variance.
"of Haste" is the best because it is written "fastest attack," while "of Speed" is the best because, as Clervis mentioned, of the cheaper repair costs. Both are great though, and that, at any rate.
EDIT: where did you find it, GodsChaingun?
Indeed, for "practical" uses, "of Speed" wins hands down; however, for "ideological" use, "of Haste" remains a great find. It therefore depends on the ground from which those are to be compared.

I always thought haste and speed ended up being the same speed due to a bug or their coding, anyways, I found a king's bastard sword of speed, and didn't care that it wasn't a perfect of haste. I also found a lot of other good items, I found a legitimate archangel's staff of apocalypse, only had 12 charges compared to the hacked version with tons more. I had a lot of other good items, but it has been so many years since i have played. Last time i tried to play there was no one to play with, no games were showing up because of my low level, and so I couldn't see much anything going on, that and I had to play on an old computer that I gave away, doesn't work on mine.
i too carried with me many, many, many years ago such a staff. i believe it had 12 charges, too, and i found another good one with a similar amount of charges, perhaps up to the 20s, although not as viable for various reasons.
concerning computer compatibility, here i am playing under ubuntu (instructions (http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=805105)), and when i am up for a playing session, in cases where i am alone i fire up the old windows-xp machine connected to the network and using bridged mode on the host.
the reason why i like firing up another machine while playing is that whenever i am surrounded by an army, and cannot escape even with the help of harmony equipment, i have no choice but to choose "new game," or to hit alt-f4. doing so is quite dangerous practice, though, as millisecond-precision errors can result in permanent item-set loss. ensuring there is at least one sitting character in the game prevents game vanishing and thus the possibility of item loss. nothing is more desolate than exiting the game hearing the death sound at the same time. it is susceptible of happening any time. one cannot always have good reflexes, and with time will get caught by that. same thing with the hell cauldrons; he will get caught anytime he is not cautious enough. some cauldrons are very misplaced and are calling forth misuse. returning to the item-loss topic, i find that the best option whenever playing alone is to let yourself be killed, and to restart in town. then, you are able to retrieve your items. however, that does not work well with a warrior, or anything that is not a sorcerer, actually. both the warrior and the rogue may have tremendous difficulty in retrieving their items without proven secondary gear. it is why it is preferable to play with somebody else at least logged on, if not an actual person playing with you. then, you can try hitting the new-game menu button without fearing item-set disappearance, and without losing gold at the same time.
it might be possible, notwithstanding the legality of it, for a single machine to run two instances of the diablo process. be careful though, as the current version of virtualbox (v4.1.0) will crash whenever one ctrl-fs without first alt-tabbing out of the diablo process. such a crash is so intense that both processes are suffering from it, and the game is loss in an instant, together will all the items lying on the ground in it.
hope i have not diverged too much from the main topic. such late-night ramblings...

there's a really good program that let's you mule (or you can use the other stash program too), making a file of any item on your computer, that you can load onto any character you want, works for both SP and MP, but is blocked on bnet for obvious reasons. So, if you were to lose any items from exiting game after death, you can just load them back hehe :D. It's slightly abusive though, as you can load elixirs onto new characters and max their stats and give them good gear, but at the same time, muling such an extreme hassle, as well as trying to randomly get gear each time for each character you make. You still have to find the gear, but at least if you find a good bow while playing a warrior you can save it, and then load it onto your rogue, so you don't waste that good equipment find simply by unfortunately be using the wrong character when finding the equipment or finding the wrong type of equipment for the character you're using, lol.
it doesn't help though with accidentally touching a couldren or other bad shrine/whatever or Black Death monster.
this is one instance where it would be legit to use a trainer to undo the bad shrine/cauldren/Black Death monster effect on you...
as it's really annoying these permantent negative things, requiring you to be uber cautious and even then, accidents can still happen. sighs.
maybe the best bet, is to make back-up sav files of your characters, and so if you hit a neg-permenent thing, you can just switch game files with your back-up.
------------
pm me if interested in it :D, and it's only a "muling program", it's not a trainer where you can cheat the game mechanics/limits on character stats and/or acquirable equipment.

I wish I remembered, but I don't, it was a while ago. Was leveling up with a friend of mine and we decided to finish from the beginning normal difficulty all the way through hell difficulty, best items we found on our adventure was that along with a +19 zodiac ring.
Do you remember whether it was from town, or from a monster drop?
It is not legitimate to do what you are talking about, HegemonKhan.
Almost all the characters I had pre-2011 were lost due to me deleting them because they were touched by such afflictions. Only one can know if their characters are fully legit or not.

twipley, already I did say that it's not allowed on bnet in my previous post:
"...but is blocked on bnet for obvious reasons..." -HK
but for any non-bnet it's really great, as muling is just a stupid and unneeded "pain in the bum".
---------
that's the challenge of games or game development:
how to "streamline" them, finding out what's enjoyable and what's not, as you don't want your gamers/customers to be wasting time doing something that has no point nor enjoyment within the game. Removing "hours of grinding or hours of muling and even hours of rarity-randomness of item hunting" as there's really no point to it, you're doing unneeded, unneccessarily work over long hours for nothing, utter waste of gamers'/customers' time. But, you don't want to remove the stuff that IS enjoyable either, or else you won't even have a fun playable game in the first place. That balance and/or knowledge is the challenge of games and game developers.
for example, muling, is such a "pain in the bum", and here's the progression of streamlining:
D1 was bad as it has no stash
D2 had a stash but it's still horrible
and it looks like D3 has finally found how to do it, and are going to di it, how to have shared stashes, if I read the article correctly on this site in my briefness of reading it, lol.
or you can look at any old game and compare it to a new game, for great examples of "Streamlining" in real development over time.
-------------------
I'm not able to understand exactly what you're talking about or saying with this:
"Almost all the characters I had pre-2011 were lost due to me deleting them because they were touched by such afflictions. Only one can know if their characters are fully legit or not." -twipley
Heh, HegemonKhan, actually I was just talking about the practice of removing negative-statistics afflictions.

Do you remember whether it was from town, or from a monster drop?
Haha, monster drop ofcourse, I don't dupe or accept dupes. This was a 2 player playthrough with my friend, and no cheats were involved.
By "from town," I meant "from Grisword." Thus, it could have been either "from town," or "from dungeon."
Returning to the core topic, aside from the "King's staff of Haste" Adria was selling the other day, Grisword was selling a "King's sword of Speed" the other night. Take note that I have not been making any kinds of shopping runs. It just showed there when I was passing by. Because, I have taken the habit of checking what he had to sell at each game beginning.
So then, my heart was pounding. Was it a "King's sword of Speed" I had before my eyes? I just had to gather the necessary gold, and that was it. Hopefully, I had just reached level 30, and the game was set to Hell difficulty, so there was to be gold to be found in the church. So I sailed along, and embarked into my quest of gold gathering (I had a sorcerer). However, soon, I figured out that the experience was climbing up fast, and feared that the item over at Grisword would disappear with the coming of a new level. So, I started selling everything worth selling, including armor pieces, elixirs of magic, et cetera. Above all, the butcher almost killed me through lockstunning, and that would have meant the end of it all, because of the significant gold loss. But I escaped every of those. At the end, I checked again at Grisword, just to notice that the listed damage was "8-16." If you are experienced with the game, you can notice that the sword indeed was a two-handed one. I was therefore excited for nothing, as it was nothing worth buying. I have not seen anything resembling a "haste" or a "speed" suffix in the shopping list since then.
Here is anecdotal evidence that the best happens when you are expecting it the less: I have just gotten my hands on the Holy Grail -- a King's sword of the Haste, which is the ultimate best thing I could hope to get my hands on at the moment. I still have no viable jewels on any of my three characters, but that is another matter. As a matter of fact, I was just leveling my level 30 or so sorcerer, and, passing by Griswold, I noticed the item. What transfered to immediate task was to farm the necessary gold to get my hands on the item, so I just carefully cleared the two topmost dungeon levels, and that was it.
I am waiting at the moment a week or two so I can get to play with a partner instead of alone. I have surprise stuff for them, too. And, remember: the best comes when you are least expecting it.

shopping success is very rare... lots of patience and lots of shopping/hours...
or the easier way: *luck*... like first time and casual check of a shop, lol
most items aren't even prefix+sufix, let alone the item type that you want, sighs.
I just got a King's Bastard Sword of Heavens (not Haste/Speed), not from shopping runs, but just a casual check of griswald (there's never a reason not to as you're nearly next to him with each game created, lol).
Unfortunately, it wasn't anywhere near a perfect one (both King's stats were minimal and heavens was only +13), sighs, but it was better than just my Bastard Sword of Heavens, lol. I was disappointed though as the King's hardly raised its listed (character screen) damage (it only went up like +10 dmg pts), sighs, though I'm still only clvl 33.
-----------------
once you can do fast Norm Diff Laz runs, it's probably better than trying your luck or patience/wasted hrs at shopping... as you can also find the GG jewelry and the uniques (RC, HotS, SS, etc) in doing so, whereas you can't from shopping.
------------------
and I had the same problem.... I mistake the Two handed Sword (2H) with the Bastard Sword (1H), lol
except I actually bought it, not realizing beforehand, wasting all my gold on it, lol. Only to be upset finding it was the wrong sword, lol. make sure you know the base stats of the sword that you want, so you do get the right sword, lol.
--------------------
"the best comes when you are least expecting it." - twipley
so true.
if you want to find something, stop looking for it!
if you want to remember something, stop trying to remember it!
If I personally had to suggest a path for advancing your character, I'd say the following:
Level 1-20ish, just focus on leveling wherever you can do so comfortably.
Level 21ish-32, transition into hell/norm runs, focus on uniques and bloodknights.
Level 32+ shopping spree! Shop for KSoH, awesome FPM, & awesome shield of tiger; do hell runs when you get bored.
After you're satisfied with shopped gear, do hell/norm runs for fast items. Level doing hell/nightmare runs. Leveling in other areas comes at the cost of drops. Item runs where you level lack the speed of teleporting lazzy runs.

If I was to do it over again, starting over:
1. Sorcerer
2. kamekaze lvling up, but also build up gold too to 18,000 (I think), so you can buy MS (mana shield) book
3. cast spells like crazy, you want to do fast lvling up, use gold to buy mana pots, don't be stingy on mana pots and casting spells, you get plenty of gold from monsters to pay for it.
4. all APs into MAG, until clvl 26
5. do many church/catacomb runs for books, and +STAT (VIT) shrines, and use gold for buying books too, as this jsut helps with lvling faster, as it's your prowess/power as a sorcerer.
6. try to find/buy +stat (STR) gear, as you can, as you're just pumping MAG at clvl ups, so you can wear more/better gear
7. at clvl 26, put APs now into VIT, as you should now be working on getting gold to buy elixirs to max your STR, DEX, and MAG.
8. get to clvl 30+ to you can do shop runs for good gear, and you should be able to do Norm Diff dlvl 15+16 runs now for good gear too, and mule gear over to your other characters (warrior and rogue) so they can progress fast :D
9. now you can work on all 3 characters, this is the fastest way to do this :D
basically the same idea as creating a (rusher+MFer) sorc as your first character in Diablo 2, to speed up your development of the other characters and gear hunting/gathering and etc.
all in the "king [...] of haste" compartment, i have seen a staff sold at adria, the next day a two-handed (speed) sword at griswold, the next day i bought a viable (although with an unamazing to-hit stat) bastard one, still the next day i have seen yet another staff sold at adria. then, some days after that (if it was not the day right after the latter day series), some monster has dropped what cain has identified as being a king falchion of haste (featuring a quite-amazing to-hit value), which, as a souvenir, i am preserving on a storage character.
i realize i must have been lucky, as i have seldom seen either king-prefixed or of-haste-suffixed items apart from the ones mentioned above, which, through once-in-a-lifetime circumstances, combined both at the same time. also note that i have not been playing in unmoderate amounts for that to happen. mere coincidental happenstances.
/late-afternoon ramblings
I have found the legendary "Helm of Spirits." At first, I thought it did not exist. I mean, I have been searching for it for weeks. All down in the Church. It was an orange zombie that finally gave it to me.
In the process, I have found some enchanted shrines (usable to both my warrior and my rogue), and when I started to think about the rarity of the Constricting Ring, eight of them dropped; three in a ten-minutes period. The durability of the Thinking Cap I found just before entering the Church would have been of 141 hidden shrines had not deceived me. I have found a Gibbous Moon, which I kept as a souvenir on a storage character. One item I will probably never get my hands on (unless I am paying someone to get it for me) is the Overlord's Helm, as Black Deaths freaken me out. Whenever I have business in the Catacombs, I try to use the Caves as an entrance as much as possible. Finally, there was no trace at all of Civerb's Cudgel, which I was not craving for anyway, as I seldom am meeting triple immunes, which populate the hardest and latest levels of the game.
I was beginning to go crazy over that Helm of Spirits, though. At first, I would play for about an hour a day, but when the days progressed I would be playing more and more each day. The last three days, I have played an unreasonable amount of time because it could not be kept off my head; the time I had spent and put into it, I was telling myself it could be dropping at any time -- however, it was not. Call it "bad luck." It has dropped now, though. I will be taking a break of the game for a while, let me tell you. The first in practice valuable drop in a time (nothing interesting from the passing shop either). The next drops that will interest me will be emerald shields and emerald bows, drops which will be of huge interest to all three of my heroes. Of course, I will be keeping an eye on rings (the best I am having of those at the moment in an eighteen zodiac), amulets, and full-plate mails, as well as on one-handed swords -- and especially on shields and bows as dropped by hell bosses, the sole source for the much-sought emerald-prefixed items.
But first, a well-deserved break from the game is being offered to me, the much-addicted item searcher.

The best item I ever found was godly plate of osmosis
ring of wizardry - +29 to magic (i've found 2 of them lol!)
amulet of wizardry - +27 to magic
sword of sorcery - +20 to magic
helm of sorcery - +20 to magic
some shield that gives me +12 to magic (best you can get from memory)
some armour that gives me +20 to magic
So my warrior can so far read up to 208. I'm still hunting for perfect rings/amulet of wizardry so I can read up to 212 and max out a few books that need 212.
Dreamflange is your friend (hint). And to achieve level 15 on every spell is a real pain in the butt. As one would need to have luck beside in knowing how to randomize the shrines (maximizing the number of actions in current before approaching said shrine so as to better randomize the odds of it not falling on chain lightning). Beside that, last two shrines would have to be falling on either healing, heal other, or firebolt, for you to be able to boost those level 13 spells back up to the max. And if you achieve it, it just tells how much of a no-lifor you are. Not bad in itself, probably. Just a tremendous waste of time.
Has anyone got any tips for finding obsidian rings of the zodiac etc? I've tried to read Jarulf's guide but it's just double dutch to me lol.

How does one go about randomizing this? Could you explain the mechanics, I'm not really aware of this.

I'm not entirely sure either. But based on what I know of RNGs...
Presumably, the Diablo RNG always begins at the same value, and then it cycles seeds from there. Having CL be reduced by an Enchanted Shrine is the most common result because it's the most common result in the early part of the RNG sequence. Therefore, if you advance beyond the early part, you will get different results.
This would also explain why if you find a Hidden Shrine (I think that's the durability one), save, and then hit it, and reload and then hit it again and so forth it will always do exactly the same thing. Obviously the save and reload only works on single player, but it does mean that the RNG is determined at some point in advance. (which is also why if you fight stuff in a level, then reload your save or die and fight the same things they will drop the same items).
I think I had some success in cycling the seeds just by rejoining the game -- that still is left up to experimental confirmation, though.
Interesting...I wonder if it could be tested to see at what point it is determined. Or maybe if it might even be exploitable. Do you happen to know the probability that it will be cl over the other spells perchance?

I have no idea. It's not something I've looked into, it's just theory based on how RNGs work. It probably is exploitable (see also: people on the SPF for D2 getting the same item repeatedly from weapon/armor racks) but without knowing what does and does not influence the RNG, and how it's purely academic.
That, and having a CL of too high a level is actually a bad thing.
I saw a king's bastard sword of haste on Griswald... while I was playing a sorcerer on single player. Much sadness was had.

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6058/6317439003_c58919691d_o.jpg
Normal diff hell run, laz lair, one of the 2 succubi (couldn't tell which one as I'd firewalled the lair just for something different lol).
Has totally made my day!
Dave
PS I've been finding a LOT of awesome rings of late, not sure why.

Thanks! Much happy am I!
Interestingly, I did hell run (normal diff) the following night and had several of the same items drop - including several uniques. Sadly, Laz and the 2 succubi didn't drop anything good :/ weird? I've *never* seen that before in all of my time playing.
I found an Obsidian amulet of the heavens (+14 to all stats) a week ago. I'm only running saintly armour of the wolf at the moment, having no luck finding an awesome plate (full plate). I have seen awesome full plate of the lion several times over the years, but not with current character. Have seen a kings bastard axe of haste in the past 2 weeks too (wirt sale). Very early on this character bought a godly helm of the whale from wirt (only AC8, but the defensive % bonus and hit point bonuses are NICE). I've seen kings sword of haste (bastard sword) several times, as well as slaughter, gore and speed variants.
I can do hell runs on nightmare, but they take time. I've tried hell/hell but sadly, hell runs aren't really viable - my AC is too low and my health, whilst at 500+, drops *very* quickly due to my AC not being high enough to avoid hits from monsters. Resistances, even in hell/hell mode are max.
Dave
Much happy am I too you for!
Sounds like close to an end game amulet, too. What the resists on it? 36 resists and you're maxed and you could free up your other ring for a dragon's ring of whathaveyou. If you're looking for awesome FPM I suggest you do some Grizzy shopping runs. You could also pick up a high AC awesome shield of the tiger and a KSoH if you don't already have one. As far as helmets go, magic ones pale in comparison to the uniques. So either grab a Royal Circlet from one of your Lazarus runs or get a Helm of Sprits from NM Butcher runs. By the by, what level are you?
What the hell. Here, awesome full plate mails abound, but there is no sight of interesting amulets, nor rings. There, interesting jewels abound, but the AC is left to be desired.
Edit: Congratulations, though. A nice screenshot! Nice resists.

FPM? What does that mean?
cLVL 36, warrior character. All stats maxed, AC 219, to hit 182%, max dam 124-148, life 567, mana 135, all resistances maxxed (even on hell diff).
I'm using:
awesome helm of the whale - AC8, +142% armour +99 hit points
saintly plate of the wolf - AC75 +114% armour +35 hit points
king's sword (bastard sword) - +77% hit +173% damage
obsidian shield of the tiger - AC18 res all +37% +43 hit points
obsidian amulet of the heavens - res all +37% +15 to all attributes
obsidian ring of the zodiac - res all +39% +16 to all attributes
ring of the zodiac - +19 to all attributes
I'm carrying:
awesome shield of the wolf - AC15 +149% armour +38 hit points
obsidian ring of the stars - res all +35% +10 to all attributes
jade amulet of the heavens - res all +30% +14 to all attributes
lapis amulet of the zodiac - res lighting 40% +20 to all attributes
I'm waiting to find another obsidian ring of the heavens and will the ordinary ring of zodiac with it. I'll then equip the awesome shield of the wolf.
I *really* need to find much better plate armour. I've seen awesome plate of the wolf/tiger/lion several times since '97, just not with my current character. *sigh*.
I don't find it really worthwhile doing hell/hell runs - the quality of item drops is not significantly better than hell/normal or hell/nightmare runs to make it worthwhile imho. It's only good if you want to level up of course. My original diablo character (saved somewhere) was a lvl 46 warrior, but did use the usual item hacks. He was a tank. I've had several legit warrior characters over the years, probably should find the saves and load them up and see what they got and mule stuff across (is that still considered legit lol?).
I'm kinda old school - beef up AC and hit points. My spells are all as high as they can go, unless I can get rings of wizardry +30 (I have 1 already, and a ring of wizardry +29 and an amulet of wizardry +29). If I can get those, I can read to 212, do some book shopping runs and then max my books as high as I possibly can with a warrior character and ditch my magic stuff (carrying +20 plate, +12 shield, +20 helm, +20 bastard sword for max magic ability in case of said ring finding).
I don't play that often, maybe once or twice a week for a normal/hell run. I occasionally do ten minutes of griswald shopping runs, but they are boring. Wirt is more interesting, but just in a p.i.t.a position in the game...
Dave
edit: I've seen kings sword of haste several times, kings sword of speed and also gore and slaughter as well. I've seen godly plate of the whale (was only AC18 though) too.
Why does everyone has to make the mistake with magic swords: Dreamflange has ten more magic points to offer one. Sigh, people -- !!! I have said that like three times last month. (Exhausted.) :steam:

Twipley I'm so sorry that I don't know the stats of every unique item off the top of my head and that I didn't notice the recommendation from your earlier post.
I shall keep an eye out for dreamflange, but I don't like my chances - in probably thousands of hours of play time, I've only found it once. :/
Once I can read my books up to 212, I can dump my magical boosting items, or mule them to another account perhaps.
Dave
Well, that's okay. I wouldn't think of anybody knowing every unique stats either, nor reading every posts here. It just seems like I've been the only one of ever having discovered the "Dreamflange" secret, though. Could have been traded with the secret-cow-level secret, in retrospective.
Furthermore... have you really found that mace only once? I must have found in average five of thinking caps, dreamflanges, demonspike coats, royal circlets, and possibly up (if not more than) fifteen unique bows, only counting windforce and eaglehorn.
I also have found three constricting rings in a fifteen-minutes period, and almost nine of them in a few hours of playing time. Back when I did play a lot. But, prefixed zodiac items, forget it -- I have, over the top of my head, about 275 AC for my rogue, but you would laugh at the crappiness of her jewels. It is interesting to me to know that those might not be as rare as I had been thinking -- which gives me hope in one day finding better jewels, if ever I get back to playing video games (which is getting rarer and rarer, and the choices thighter and thighter, when one grows up, it seems -- at least, over here).
I really should be getting some sleep now, though. :fire:
And yeah, if you are looking for it, then forget it -- you will be damned in damn-near never finding it. This game really is diabolical on those matters. If it senses you are looking for it, then you are out. Or at least out of your well-needed sleep and sanity of mind for a while. To be locked up in one's room -- if that ever is to be an interesting experience...

Thanks! It's been so long since I've seen a dreamflange that I simply could not remember its stats and it didn't occur to this old fart to go google it ;-)
Yup, found it only once. I mean with the amount of hours that I've played Diablo, I should have technically found more than one obsidian ring of the zodiac too, but alas...I've found a few thinking caps (not too many, seems to be hard to find for me as well), quite a few demonspike coats (in fact, 1 the same night that I found the obsidian ring of the zodiac lol). royal circlet is another one that I found very hard to find - I've found 2 or 3 of them that's it. And haven't found one of them in a VERY long time. There isn't much I haven't found to be honest. Years ago I'd export all my item finds via a trainer to a floppy disc etc and had quite a few ;-)
Speaking of constricting rings, haven't found one of those in a while either. I have found 3 ring of engagements in the past week though *sigh*. From memory, I don't believe I've ever found a Ring of Regha either. Weird isn't it how some items are just never found by an individual, but others find lots of them! I do think Diablo favours certain items depending on what character you are playing, but that doesn't T up with what Jarulf's guide says. mmm....
Dave
edit: I played on Diablo retail AUS-1 from '97 for a few years...player named "mrtheoden" - lvl 46 warrior, but I had high level rogues and mages too...was a member of the CC-clan for a good while before starting up my own clan with a bunch of other Aussies and a few others.

I notice that doing new character games... you get more of the Norm Difficulty Butcher and/or Leoric good uniques often... when using my higher level characters... I've been having a huge dry spell...
I believe for thinking caps and civerbs cudgel, you want to do Norm Difficulty Butcher and/or Leoric runs
For Constricting Ring, you want to do Norm Difficulty Butcher runs
for Royal Circlet, I believe Norm Difficulty Laz is best, but Laz+2/3 unique monsters has such a big selection... usually you get junk from them... sighs...
---------------
I don't think I've yet seen a Dream Flange or Naj Plate yet, where should I run for these? Laz or elsewhere?
---------------------
and dpastern,
I don't think you need more resists in NM and Hell difficulties, I don't think D1 is like D2 where you got the resistance penalties in NM and Hell difficulties, so in other words, you're wasting mods (Prefix/Suffix) with all those resists...
all you need is 75, so 35+40, 36+39, or 37+38 resists is all you need of only using two items. Or, if you can't get that high resists for 2 items yet, then you'll need 3 items obviously.
Or, am I wrong?

Thanks HegemonKhan - will consider your advice and test it tonight. I've found royal circlet a few times, each time in the caves from memory. I had a Naj plate the other night, pity, I'd have set up a game on b.net for you, oh well. I'll keep an eye out. I should set up a mule character to lift some of my stuff up off this char and free up space I guess. Naj plate I've found mostly in normal/laz runs, but have seen in caves too several times.
You're probably right about resistances too lol. I guess I just like rings ;-) I might go test tonight and if good, sell the obsidian shield and use the awesome shield to boost my def AC and hit point stats. Thanks for reminding this old fart. I rarely play nm/hell diffs with my legit characters - I can manage nm/hell runs, but have to take it slow. hell/hell runs are beyond my character as it currently is imho. Even on my old char from many years ago, using hacked items (usual stuff), hell/hell was difficult, although I could do hell/hell runs solo, it took a while. Mages are the best for hell/hell imho - thinking cap, naj plate, arch angels staff of apocalypse (yes, it does exist, have found it several times, but usually with only 12 charges, and it costs a fortune to recharge). Apocalypse kills everything bar diablo, resistances mean jack **** with it. As long as the monsters don't crowd you, you're fine imho.
Anyways, off to play a bit of diablo before I install and play Skyrim (just got it today).

PS I put down a deposit on the boxed promo set for Diablo III today too *grins*

well, Hell Hell is more for ~ clvl 40+ (though this varies by character: Warrior takes clvl 45+ Rogue takes ~ clvl 40+, and Sorcerer ~clvl 30+ to be expert - ready for Hell Hell), with near godly gear, which you can get (clvl 40) most quickly by doing NM Hell runs, I think.
I'm playing MP but sololy (direct connect mp games playing by myself), so don't worry about giving me stuff, as I want to find it on my own - if I just take stuff, I might as well just use a trainer... and then if using a trainer... why even play in the first place... lol.
also, there's a really cool-good Muling program that I use anyways.
I was not aware one could handle Hell/Hell with a Naj's plate. One of my old mages could not go too far beyond catacombs most of the time, depending of the monster spawns, because of his low AC. But, again, at that time I was not aware of the importance of having great armors.
Concerning the awesome shield, dpastern, you might notice a significant difference equipping it. Royal Circlet, too, is good defense combined with overall-good bonuses.
For a mage, even on normal difficulty, I think it is more viable to leave the AA staff of A, together with the Naj's plate, behind. That is, unless you want to astonish your friends with level-20 spells -- which would be nice for a newbie to see. It must be kept in mind, though, that on their side they will not notice anything going faster than a level-1 bolt.
The reason level-18 spells are fine on normal difficulty is that fireball halts (I learned that through Jarulf's guide the past week) speed gain after level 17 or so. Meaning, if it kills (much) anything in one hit, then those two extra spell levels are of no common use.
Nice to see people still interested in this game.

Yeah, you can tank mage, been there, done that, but it's sorta not in the spirit of the character imho. Apocalypse pretty much kills anything in one go before it gets near you. As long as you're quick to use the spell, voila. TP out of the way if need be.
Godly gear....pretty much doesn't exist like most people want. You'll NEVER find a godly plate (full plate). Best that you'll find that combo on is breast plate (max AC 23 or so). Same with the helm (best you'll probably see is AC12, and that's a perfect item generation). I'm yet to see a legit godly shield + hit point. Far better to go for an awesome shield + lion (I'd have to look it up to be 100% sure, but I'm reasonably sure that this combination is doable, if not, it might go up to Tiger, which offers around 45 hit points), but it's *very* rare.
In some ways, I do prefer D2's armour - where you had gloves and boots and braces, giving you some more variability. But D2 was just too large imho, and too boring. It lost the spirit of the game imho.

laughs, I meant godly as in best (or near best) gear, not Godly as in the Prefix :D
Sorry for the confusion.
---------------------------------------------------------
I think DF + SS or Holy/Awesome Tower/Gothic Shield of Tiger, is better than AASoA.
AA Staff of A is really only useful/better for Soul Burner Hell Hell dlvls.
---------------------------------------------------------
A Godly Tower/Gothic Shield of the Tiger can only be gotten from Wirt while at clvls 19-21

My AA staff only has nine charges. In the past, I think I found another one too, but it had about the same number of charges. Just a little bit short of being viable, in my opinion.
I'm yet to see a legit godly shield + hit point.
I almost would be interested in a simple, plain godly shield for my mage. 60 defense points, that would not be nothing! However, I currently am wearing a resist shield. About 20 defense points less than my spare ASotT, although it allows me a significant increase in mana amount. Concerning the extra spell level, I prefer my 137/73 awesome plate to it. However, it can be a pain at times to achieve the needed strength for it. Bonuses on shield or on the armor itself would be a great help in accomplishing so! So rarely death finds its way to me in Hell/Hell, thanks to the armor class. In the old days, the caves would be getting me before I could get a glimpse of the realms of the below.
But D2 was just too large imho, and too boring. It lost the spirit of the game imho.
I could not agree more. The spirit is in the original one, and was not in the least transferred to the ulterior iterations of the game.
What is possible of achieving, in the strength-bonus realm, concerning both shield and armor?

I believe (check this site's d1 Wiki for accurate info):
Shield of Power = +15 STR
Armor of the Giants = +20 STR
--------------
I forgot which character, but the guide recommends Awesome Full Plate Armor of Giants either for Rogue or Sorceror.
That would be for the mage, as the rogue often already has an heavens bow equipped, in addition to having greater base strength.
Concerning shields, I have come to believe there are not any really useful suffixes. This leaves me with either godly shields (I should definitely pay Wirt off a visit more often, though!), or nice-resists ones. Base AC in either case has to be great, too.
Therefore, keep those for the mage, and the awesome ones for the warrior.

If only it would be possible to get:
Awesome Gothic/Tower of the Moon (+7 all attributes), sighs...
---------------------
Shield choices:
Storm Strike (SS) (unique Shield) if you want fast block for Rogue or Sorceror (Warrior already has the fast block naturally, so SS' fast block does nothing for the Warrior), and also you do get +10 STR and good AC (40) too, as well.
Awesome Gothic(18 AC)/Tower(20 AC) Shield of the Tiger for AC+Life
Holy (better then Awesome) Gothic(18 AC)/Tower(20 AC) Shield of the Tiger/Lion (only can get from Wirt and only while at clvl 19-21) for AC+Life ("Best" Shield in the game)
Holy (better then Awesome) Gothic(18 AC)/Tower(20 AC) Shield (I'm not sure if Wirt and between clvl 19-21 still applies for a Holy Shield without the suffix or not) for AC
Obsidian Gothic(18 AC)/Tower(20 AC) Shield of the Tiger/Lion for Resists+Life
Emerald (not sure if wirt sells, or if only found in dungeons) Gothic(18 AC)/Tower(20 AC) Shield of the Tiger/Lion (if it's possible to have these suffixes) for Resists+Life
Emerald (not sure if wirt sells, or if only found in dungeons) Gothic(18 AC)/Tower(20 AC) Shield for Resists
??? (weaker types of) Shield of the Moon (+7 all attributes) if you don't need AC or nor SS' Fast Block, for more attributes
??? (weaker types of) Shield of the ??? (+15 to one attribute, except STR as SS would be better at a small cost of 5 less STR) if you don't need AC or nor SS' Fast Block, for more attributes
The Deflector (unique shield): only 7 AC, but +10% to All Resists, and most interestingly is the -20% damage received!!!
You could get a Blessed Tower Shield of the Moon (42 AC, +7 all) max. Not too bad.
Compare that to my Awesome Tower Shield of the Tiger (45AC, +49 life).
Or you could do the Holy Shield of the Tiger (54AC, +50 life) max. But I think I calculated out how long that would take you if you did nothing but Wirt runs at clvl 19. It was something like a month straight with no sleep or pee breaks (and don't count on finding anything else worthwhile in the meantime).
HegemonKhan
15-11-2011, 18:56
how/where would you be able to get the Blessed Tower Shield of the Moon?
dungeon, Griswald, or Wirt? At a certain clvl range?
So I decided to crunch some numbers because I'm a nerd and I get some kind of sick enjoyment out of it. By the by, you couldn't get a Holy Shield of the Moon because you could only be up to level 11 for Moon and at that point you can only get a Large Shield, defeating the purpose of Holy to begin with. That's the same for Wirt, Grizzy, or dungeons.
Holy Shield of the Tiger
Odds:
Base Item: 1 in 59
Prefix: 1 in 8
Suffix: 1 in 2
Chance of both prefix & suffix: 1 in 6
Total Chance per visit to Wirt: 1 in 5,664
(That's for clvl 21. Clvl 20 is 1 in 11,484 and clvl 19 can't generate the Tower Shield.)
So, I think it takes about 40 seconds to do a Wirt run (could be off a bit). So that means it would take about 63 hours of nothing but Wirt runs. That's not quite as bad as a month straight, just a week of 9 hours of Wirt runs a day, or two months of an hour a day. I should also mention that during that time you could also find a King's Bastard Sword of Haste (not Speed) at the same rate as the shield. Nothing else, though, really, in terms of end game gear.
So I guess it could be a considerable endeavor. Especially considering that armor has a linear relation to your chance to be hit (unlike DII). So you could reduce your melee damage taken by 4% on average.
However, the range is +151% to +170% on 12 to 20 base AC. So you could toil for all this time and get something that gives you 30 AC or 54 AC. That's a huge swing. Compare that to my decent Awesome TS of the Tiger (from Grizzy) that gives me 45 AC.

I find it interesting re: drop rates - for a obs zod it's like only 1200% for a ksoh it's like 5000%! Now, I've found 2 ksoh in my time playing this game, and only 1 obs zod, weird eh?

I think you're better of shopping that KSoH, something you can never get a ObsZod doing.

Yup, true. Both times I found a ksoh via shopping.
Dave
Hmm. Are you saying one has a better chance of finding a KSOH than an OZ? Because, I have found a KSOH straight from the dungeon. Interesting to know it is only bad luck that explains the lack of OZs in my fingers and neck. Interesting thing about shields too, Clervis! Too bad even the best can reveal themselves to be not that good, sometimes (speaking of HSotT).

nah, it's easier to find a zod than a ksoh. I was just bemused that @ a 1 in 5000 odd game find ratio for a ksoh, I've found 2, but for a zod, which is around 1 in 1200 games, I've found 1, and it's taken me a lot more games to find that one zod ring than the ksoh....
I know that Blizzard's internal documents might say 1 in X amount of games to find a zod, but I reckon those figures aren't right, and the rings are a lot harder to find than they say imho...
Dave
edit: either that, or a LOT of people are just VERY unlucky and just aren't able to match the "odds"...my logic here is that if a lot of people aren't finding the zod rings etc in 1200 games, but taking 5000 games etc, then the published odds are WRONG. That the majority of people would be unlucky is just not statistical possible imho.
I've also found two KSoH and one ObsZod, but the two KSoH were shopped, as I imagine the bulk of KSoH's are. So that statistic sounds like it could be right, as long as we're only talking about monster drops, which I think the statistic is.
The rings are 3 times more likely to drop than any particular magical base items (amulets twice as likely). It might not seem this way because normal items fall for all other base items. Then you have to take into account the qlvl for the prefixes/suffixes.
Obsidian(24) Ring(5,10,15) of the Zodiac (30)
Obsidian(24) Amulet(8,16) of the Zodiac (30)
King's(28) Bastard Sword(10) of Haste/Speed (27/19)
So ObsZods are 5 times more likely to spawn that KSoHS's. But KSoHS's are twice as likely to have a good suffix. But ObsZods have a smaller number of monsters that can drop (BloodKnights, SoulBurners, Advocates, & higher unique monsters). KSoHS's can drop from all those plus SteelLords, Cabalists, HellSpawn, and some lower level uniques. You also have to take into account prefix/suffix possibilities. KSoHS's have 22 alternate prefixes & 18 alternate suffixes. ObsZods have 14 alternate prefixes & 15 alternate suffixes.
Rough estimate:
KSoHSprob*C=ObsZodprob
C=5[base item]*.5[PosSuf]*.5[AvailableMonsters]*22/14[AltPre]*18/15[AltSuf]
So that means that ObsZods should roughly drop about 2.36 times more often than KSOHS's. But that's both of Haste & of Speed. Just considering of Haste and you wind up with 4.71 less likely. Which is pretty close to that 5000 to 1200 ratio (4.17) you mentioned.
So I'd say it sounds about right, theoretically. Empirically, I can only say that I've found one ObsZod and no KSoHS's (from drops). You said you've had the same experience. And it's worth mentioning that if you include of Speed it's not quite a bleak. But if you only target higher level monsters, like I do, there's a bigger difference.

Yes, but I've played a LOT more than 1200 games. A LOT more. And no one that I knew, who'd also played more than 1200 games I reckon, had ever found a legit obs zod. I know what the game mechanics stats say, but I don't think the game actually does abide by those drop rates to be entirely honest.

What's more effective, doing full level clears (dlvl 13-16, or just dlvl 15-16), or just specifically-only running unique monsters, like Laz-n-Girls and Gorash, or whoever else, for getting uniques or good/godly magicals ??
do full level clears help getting uniques or good/godly magicals being dropped from the unique monsters (and of course the extra chance of getting drops from the norm monsters too), such as possibly changing the randomness to more favorable odds, or no, in your experience?
---------
for example, I'm still in need of getting RC, is it more effective to just go straight for Laz-n-Girls, or should I do full level clear of dlvl 15 before I then do Laz-n-Girls? Does the full level clear enhance the odds of getting a unique (and/or other good/godly magicals) dropped by Laz-n-Girls ???
---------
Does kill count, effect drops? i.e. if I kill 20 normal monsters before I kill an unique monster, is there increased odds of jewelry, good/godly other type of magical, and/or unique?
maybe the kill count is tied to the same type of monsters? i.e. if I kill 20 knights, then is Gorash is more likely to drop a good/godly jewelry or other magical ??? or, i.e. if I kill 20 of the witches, then are the 2 Laz girls (+ the wandering other dlvl 15 girl), more likely to drop a good/godly jewelry or other magical ???
-----------
the kill count, just seems suspicious... it can't be there just for amusement... it has to have some in-game mechanic that it effects...
and at least in my experience... it seems to be the case... if I just kill unique monsters... I usually get junk... but the more often I do full level clears, the more often I seem to get good stuff from the unique monsters, as well as the pretty good chance of the normal monsters dropping something too..
I think both of your problems are just a matter of perception, hege and Dave.. Really good gear, being as rare as it is, doesn't come easy. It is easy, however, to attached meaning to inconsequential circumstances once it happens. That's where things like astrology, gambler habits, and superstitions come from. The mechanics I've described are taken straight from the game code, not observation and not superstition. So, unless blizzard gave you a different version with item generation handicaps, it's more likely you're mind is wondering while you're mindlessly hacking away for a rare drop, or you could just be unlucky.
I'm not unlucky, I'm just not lucky.

chuckles, my fancies aside, there's still the real-valid question that I asked:
In your experiences, *for item finding* (not exp for clvl ups), is it better to do (1) full single level clears, (2) full dlvl 13-16 level clears, or to just do (3) runs of specific unique monsters like Laz-N-Girls ?
based on the extra time it takes for (1) single lvl clears or (2) full dlvl 13-16 lvl clears, is it worth it for what you can find, or is it better to just do (3) runs of specific unique monsters like Laz-n-Girls ??
Time vs Results, which of the 3 methods is best?
The best is whatever choice drops the best items, then make it as hypothesis, then at next sight hail as the Bible.
To answer your question in an unmocking (:p) manner, though, I never had the patience to clear the whole hell, so I just teleported to Laz-n-girls and cleared that, but told myself that since I am at it, why not hunt for the blue witch, and since I'm at it hunt the fighter at the bottom. Then I would clear the most populated areas of that level, but after a while all that game would be beginning to feel "boring as hell," so I just gave up item hunting and went to gain level 46.
If I would be playing again, though, I might do it only for leveling up, using my rogue (level 32), or my same-level warrior if I would be feeling like it (I doubt it, though), while it is still motivating to do so (that is, in their thirties). Gear do come with levels, anyway. The proof is that (unless I have been lucky out of the rule) I have in my possession every-or-so good items of the game, but I am still lacking the rings and amulets, and that, without having performed any particular kind of shopping runs. Leveling-and-item-finding combo for the winner -- although it remains unfortunate one never is to get to fight elsewhere than hell for that most of the time. However, it is to be kept in mind that level 2 runs are good to find rare uniques, levels 8-7-6 runs for shrine hunting, and level 9-to-hell runs for leveling once one gets past their mid-forties. Browsing hell the rest of the time. Or, still, browsing these very forums. :)

I know what the game mechanics are. Let's look at this way - if the game says 1 in 1200 games for an obs zod, and myself and probably Ten players that I knew *never* found one in that many games, are the stats wrong, or are we all just plain unlucky? I stand by my comments that the odds on finding an obs zod are a lot higher than officially stated.
Let's also consider that I've seen (in shops) 2 KSOH (which supposedly 1 in 5000 games stats). Do the maths, that's potentially 1 in 10000 vs 1 in 1200. Something isn't right ;-)
You are of course, free to disagree, but that doesn't make me wrong.
Dave
I have never found an obsidian ring of the zodiac, but I have not done 1,200 complete high-level-monsters clears, either. 1,200 clears is a lot. I wonder how many level-50 characters one could build through that number of hell runs. One and a half?
1,200 hell clears, just for example, is a lot. It means, roughly four of those a day, or about sixteen level clears a day, in average for a year. It is "a lot." Are you sure that all your acquaintances have done it? I'm not saying you are wrong, but I am not saying you are right, either. You could well be right about it, though. But, maybe you already are well aware of how much 1,200 clears is, in bare quantities. If you and your acquaintances have done such a thing, you have sure played quite a lot.
I have the feeling I am repeating myself. Sorry about that, fellow. :coffee:

These days I generally do levels 13-15, I skip lvl 16 as I have *never* found a decent item since I started playing D1 back in '97. The goodies usually drop @ Laz's lair from my experience. The rest of the drops are quite mediocre.
I knew quite a fair few lvl 50 characters back in the day, and a lot of high level characters (lvl 45 through to 50, including my old main character which was just shy on lvl 47). I've probably had a dozen characters in the high 30s levels since then too (just warrior characters). I'm not even touching on the 5 or so mage characters that I've had. I never took to the rogue character to be honest, 1 rogue char from me in all these years :/

FireIceTalon (http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7699864&postcount=4) mostly did level 16, along with Laz, and unique and blood knights along the way. He said, "always clear level 16 entirely." But, like I said, I found that to be boring. It would be cool if the caves, for example, offered decent items -- but they are not, and never will.
I do not remember where most of my items came from, but I have the feeling most have came from shops -- that is, I would always check over at Griswold before going down to hell. He is the chief source of the items I have chosen to keep over the months. I always sort of got an "adrenaline rush," or just a nice feeling, in the face of Laz's room and the drop possibilities there. "What am I going to get?; What will be dropping?" Usually, not much, though.
But, the chance is still there, and once in a while, mostly when I would not be expecting it, something great would drop. Either from a random unique, or from a regular monster. 99% of the time the identified items are not worth keeping, though. It all might be a matter of luck. You know, one day lots of nice items are dropping, and then you may live through a hundred of such days, where you would not even have the chance to find crap.
Anyone knows on which realm/channel is Fireicetalon hanging out now? I used to play with him but lost contact since I took a break from D1.
My best drops in D1
Uniques:
Royal Circlet: at least 5 of them
Thinking Cap: a few, maybe 2-3
Helm of Spirits: found it twice, traded one for a 60/19 Dragon/Zod ring
Stormshield
DreamFlange: Over 9000 times
Windforce
Others:
Awesome Full Plate mail of Vigor (60Ac / 136% / 17 Vit)
Awesome Full Plate Mail of the Giants (64/141/18)
Awesome Full Plate Mail (74/147)
Obisidan Breast Plate of the Lion (24/38/56)
Obsidian Full Plate Mail of the Lion (73/33/59)
King's Bastard Sword of Speed (80/175)
Arch-Angel's Staff of Wizardry (28 Mag)
Savage Long War Bow of the Heavens (123/13)
Obsidian Amulet of the Lion (40/58)
Jade ring of the Heavens (28/13)
Jade Ring of the Zodiac (23/17)
Gold Ring of Perfection (27%/25 Dex)
Obsidian ring of the Zodiac (38/16)
Obsidian Ring of the Heavens (39/15)
Dragon's ring of the Zodiac (51/19)
Nice full plate mail and jewels, by the way. In my opinion, the ring is worth more than the Sprits, though.
I am just starting three separated single-player campaigns, by the way. The game is gaining a new dimension with all the added quests and dialogue. Not talking of the ability to save and load when you want, and the high experience-gaining and monster-killing rates.

Emerald Flail of the Stars, from Laz. I hate getting addicted to an item like this when the optimal piece, Dreamflange, bears no resemblance to it. But that's what happens with Emerald. I have a Dreamflange, too, and I vacillate between the two items like a smitten teenage girl.
chuckles, my fancies aside, there's still the real-valid question that I asked:
In your experiences, *for item finding* (not exp for clvl ups), is it better to do (1) full single level clears, (2) full dlvl 13-16 level clears, or to just do (3) runs of specific unique monsters like Laz-N-Girls ?
based on the extra time it takes for (1) single lvl clears or (2) full dlvl 13-16 lvl clears, is it worth it for what you can find, or is it better to just do (3) runs of specific unique monsters like Laz-n-Girls ??
Time vs Results, which of the 3 methods is best?Bosses (lazarus and any bosses and armor racks you find on the way) are much better than clears. This creates a dilemma. Some of your time needs to be spent in hell doing level clears to level up, but to gear up you need to do normal boss runs. For sorcs in need of easy experience, might I recommend the chain lightning bait in the year 2065 dungeon. It also has some good permanent stat shrines.

Yes, he made away like a bandit in this trade. Someone must have been really frustrated looking for a Sprits, then talked themselves into it being rarer than it actually is. I've found 3, first one was unfortunately long but the others came pretty easily.
The other thing to take into account is that the zod is near perfect and you could go a lifetime without finding a good one like that.. whereas the HoS in its worst form is only 2ac difference, which is less severe than say 60/19 vs 55/16 or something like that. This has to be one of the most lopsided trades in Rayz favor
Yeah I was really happy of this trade!
The funniest part about it is that the first time I went and tried to find a Helm of Sprits, I went on Dungeon level 2, on NM. I killed a boss and he dropped it. I was like WTF? First run, first monster.... not bad.

Wow, that is good!
First time I found one I did dlvl2 runs for about 10 days, then gave up... a few days later I was doing hidden runs and saw a (unique monster) glow from the other side of the wall. I telekilled it and it threw down a pefect HoS. I was pretty happy :cloud9:
