What I propose first and foremost is Diablo 3 needs 1 thing to succeed, a solid base from which to build around. Everything else should write itself provided the Base needs are met first.

1."Same Name" Skill Sets
The reason why I think this is a pre-requisite is it would allow Diablo 3 to have: as many character classes as that game can "handle" without finding "class specific" items becoming a "nuisance" rather than fun!
Allow me to give an example...
The Druid, and the Necromancer could both have a skill set with the same exact name: Summoning.
The advantage of this.. if you find an item that says +2 Summoning skills.. it means +2 summoning skills for the Necromancer AND the Druid!
This means items throughout the game are "simplified" in that several classes out there will want the same items if they can find them. You don't have an "amazon only" bow, if that bow granted bonuses to skill sets that are in common for more than 1 character class.
(Ahh, sooo... nice.. simple..)

Note, not all character classes should have the same skill set names.. but it would definately simplify things.

Some "common same name skill sets" I envision under this idea:
* Masteries (Barbarian, Samurai, Paladin, Knight, Amazon, Assassin, Monk)
* Combat (Same as above, the "close combat" and ranged combat characters.. with the exception of spellcasters)
* Summoning (Druid, Necromancer)
* Elemental (Sorcerer/Sorceress, Druid)
(I think you're starting to see the pattern...)

2."Same Name" Skills (Just like skill sets but 1 skill!)
It would also be a huge help (and save on memory and whatnot) if there were skills that had the same name even if the characters that used them were completely different (worked in a different way.)

For example:
"Fury" could be a skill for~
-Barbarian 2 weapon attack
-Druid Wereform zeal-like attack we see in diablo 2
-A paladin attack or aura

So that "fury" skill could be 3 completely different things to 3 different character.. but saves hassle because when people find let's say "Reaper's Axe: Fury +5" barb's, druids and pally's would like it!

Now "sacrifice" could be a skill that means:
A self-damaging low level attack for the paladin
A "dagger specialization" skill for the necromancer

2 totally different takes on a skill, of the same name! (Eww, pally and necro share a skill name, well.. so be it..)

And again, this would save hassles (and text space) on an item because it would apply to several different characters, so people wouldn't be disappointed when they find an item that adds a bonus to a specific skill.. they would actually want such an item!

3. Every character class in the game should have a male/female choice! (Except for the Amazon, she is female only!)
You already did the coding for a character class, why not have 2 appearance choices for the same deal?
Besides.. a female necromancer probably looks pretty goth.. and the female barb would.. er.. probably be taller than most of the male non-barb characters, but very interesting!

The classes I'd love to see in Diablo 3:
Barbarian (Can specialize in ANY non-ranged weapon, but can specialize in thrown weapons as well..)
Paladin (Very similar to the one in Diablo 2, only weapon specializations are: Sword, Mace)
Knight (He's a bit of a cross between the barb and the paladin.. those old "paladin only" shields will now be "paladin/knight" only shields! His specializations are: Sword, Mace, Axe, and Armour & Shield! He can buy into a skill that lowers requirements for any armour or shield! Example STR requirments.. Dex.. Etc.)
Samurai He is all about specializing in Swords & Bows only! He is on par with the Amazon when it comes to bows, they shar many of the "same" arrow attacks and whatnot. BUT the samurai has a skill which lowers his requirements (STR and DEX) to use swords and bows.. which means he can use them sooner than anyone if he wants to! He also has tons of crazy sword attacks, and like the barb can use 1 or 2 weapons at a time (but only if both weapons are swords!)
Assassin Female assassin is the cool lady we have seen, male assassin however is the Ninja! Ninja is just hated by the samurai and monks in this game! Townspeople spit at you if you are an assassin in some acts.. Assassin can use 2 claws.. or 2 daggers! That may sound strange, but think about it.. 2 daggers could also be very cool.. allows players more options! only specialization they have is claws and daggers. BUT there should be an assassin only throwing weapon called shurukien (which have X shots just like javelins and axes..) and you're shurkein skill buffs their damage!
Monk The monk and the assassin both have the martial arts skill sets. The samurai should throw the occasional kick into his sword attacks, but he doesn't have a martial arts skill set per se. The monk is all about specializing in unarmed martial arts attacks, or the staff! The monk gets all kinds of bonuses to run/walk and resistances if they wear light or no armour. The monk has the highest stamina in the game, second only to the barb, assassin and amazon.
Amazon female only, but maybe you could allow a choice of up to 3 or 4 hair colors. :) But seriously she is all about the spear, javelin and bows and crossbows! The zon is a very cool character, so she should be similar to what Diablo 2 offers.. but better.

Hi!

Umm... Yeah....

First of all, there won't be druid or necromancer. Just so that you know.

As this idea has some sense to it i don't see it needed. As it would help to gain items faster due the fact that less items would be needed or it would harm those that do not have any of these skills that have same names. Less items also means less diversity.

Just for a small explain, If there would be a common summoning for 2 classes and one class without. If there would be 2 items to 1 of those summons to non summons the one without the summons would be in defecit as the other gear drops more often and such the other classes get the gear more easilly. If they do it so that they drop 1 to 1 it will make the summon skill items alot more rare or alot less of them, wich would not really help the easyness to get them and actually would harm the diversity or players ability to gain specific item.

Also having same names makes it alot more difficult. This could be handled better with skill types. Skills could be from "Ice" type or "Summoning" and the names could be anything they want. And i pretty much know for sure that the skills are categorized like this due the classes gain bonuses to different active skills from other skills. Like Thunderstruck gives bonus to all lightning spells and most if not all lightning spells are in Storm tree so the spells are specified already.

PS: I guess we all know they aren't hiring you... :/

I think Blizzard already did something like this, sort of, with + to fire skills. It applied to all sorts of classes like paladin's holy fire, zon's exploding arrow, etc. They just didn't capitalize on the idea. It would have been nice to have + to cold skills and so on.

I would not want to see same name skills or trees because it:

1-causes a bit of confusion, forcing the player to distinuish in trades which tree/class he's talking about each time.

2-Shows Blizzard's lack of creativity. There were all kinds of things they could have called the druids summoning tree (conjuring, calling, etc.) but they simply copied the necro's tree name and that irked me.

Titan quest had items that enhanced summons directly rather than through +skills which I think allows for more refinement-ie you want your summons for reflective damage so you get items with minion life boost.
