View Full Version : To see or, or not see...

I'm sure most people have seen this video of a fan's opinion of color scheme and lighting. Personally i think the game looks great the graphics are awsome and when playing D, DII, LOD I always thought how much cooler it would be if the graphics were better. The work blizzard has done is terrific. Again, the game looks GREAT.
But...Part of the reason i feel we all loved the game was the spookyness of the game and the fact that you didn't know what was coming at you around the corner or further in to the dungen/cave/ ect. I Noticed when watching the video that i felt more at ease when "lights" came on or when the fan switched to the original (blizzard) version of the gameplay video. When I watched the fan's version I couldn't see too far ahead which would be consistant too "real" life. It gave me the same feeling of dread (that i better inch along because who knows who or whats around that corner or further down) like i had in the other diablo games. The game looks great, but as we know from the past success of the original games it doesn't always come down to graphics that makes a game great. D, DII, were not the most visually impressive games at the time of their release, but they sold millions of copies. people loved it because it immersed them in the experience. So...To see or not to see...Me personlly, I think it would be better to be scared a little every now and then. Not being able to see too far ahead in some "dungeons" is a good thing. I think the game is great no matter what but... Turn the lights down and the spookiness up.
This topic is overdone lol but I'll give my own opinion: I don't like the darkness, no it doesn't make me scared, instead it makes me feel as if I'm playing D3 on a 10in monitor.

In regards to the "not seeing ahead" thing, that really only applies to me in an FPS, especially when I turn around and something's there that I'm pretty sure wasn't just there.
I think more people will just complain about not being able to see. Of course, monitors and some games have a brightness setting, so people can pretty much make their own environments without making the developers force a setting on them.
Well Firvagor you could adjust the brightness settings like you said, it'll help a bit with the darkness but it still makes the picture overall a bit uglier because of the brightness. It might be odd to have a "shadow" option where you can adjust how much darkness there are but it'll be a self-induced handicap and no one will want it, even the people that loves the darkness won't use it either.
I concur, over done.
However, I don't understand how people say diablo should be much darker. Diablo was very dark and grainy. Diablo 2 brought a larger palette and was much brighter. It only seemed darker due to the players light radius. They have just removed that.
Am I the only one who cranked up the brightness and contrast in D2?

I always thought the deserts of Act 2 were a welcome respite from the catacombs; Ditto with the bright lava flows after the dreary opening to Act 4.

Yeah I thought so.
The thing I would want though is that the world looks more dark and scary the further you get in the game. I have no problem with the grapics shown so far. But it isn't unreasonable that the game starts out on a lighter note and the closer you get to the "great evil" the more scary the atmosphere gets. D1 succeeded with it, and D2 did as well, even if it wasn't as clear. Not counting act 5. And the thing people seems to disregard is that there are a lot of other things than just the color scheme that makes something scary. I.e. the music, how you build up in tension in different ways, the way things move and interact and so on. It isn't just the "scary movie tactic" of making people jump out of there seats with something coming at you unexpected.

I agree completely; I think it's ludicrous to assume that just because the game starts out in a summery hilltop that it will end that way.
As an example, I really, really REALLY loved how Titan Quest Immortal throne handled it. When going through the expansion act you literally cross-over into the underworld and it is the stark nature of the transition that I find so enrapturing every time. And then, if that wasn't enough, the darkness 'evolves' the deeper down into Hades realm one gets.

I've been playing a sorc solo lately and I can't tell you how frustrating it is to be running through a cave or dungeon and BOOM! there's a monster smacking me in the face before I can see it.
Diablo II was never creepy. Diablo I was very creepy.
I'd rather have the unique spawn animations then the monsters just standing around in a dark room like Diablo 1/2.
It isn't the color that people have a problem with, it's the light radius. However, after seeing it in 3D I think (imo) it just doesn't work. It looks stupid.
Now imagine that in a multi-tiered dungeon like the tristram cathedral in D3. I just don't see how that would work.
The game has gone the route of dynamic lighting. Lighting effected by light sources. Opposed to a glow around a player and grainy edges.
In the end everyone will play the game because they love the series. They will complain, but it will fall upon deaf ears. Blizzard is moving forward with their games and engines.

First things first, the demo only shows the starting places, akin to Blood Moor in D2, and so far the environment, lighting and graphics are awesome. Imagine the future maps and dungeons.
There should always be certain limits, which Blizzard has already intended so, to where this "gloom and dark" be implemented to.
The forest and waterfall regions are a good example, as they were made to look realistic (pity the retards who made and sign that ridiculous "petition"), because not EVERYTHING should be made into dark lifeless statues.
Turn the lights down and the spookiness up.
There will always be an option to tweak your gamma and lighting settings.
That's not the starting area though. They've stated it was an area created for Blizzcon similar to that of a level 5 area.
Turn the ambient lighting down and the point lighting up and-

Cold plains aren't a starting area, they're after the starting area.
In the end everyone will play the game because they love the series.
I find comments like these a little insulting. It implies everyone has little caution or self control and will burn their resources with little regard to whether the product will actually be used or end up in a pile with their ab roller, magic bullet, and drum set.

A fairly recent example of such is Americas Army 3. I was apart of the beta, the game was not ready to be released but the military pushed for the release date, game got released. Regardless of how bad the released product was, in the middle was tons of complaining, yet millions of people downloaded it and play it. Even after a hot fix was released 2 days in to the game being out, and made things no better... people continued to complain, yet play.
Never underestimate the power of human nature. Diablo fans will play this game regardless of their current views. Hell those views could sway very quickly depending on how blizzcon information comes across.
Obviously there are some people who are the objection to the above.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. On a straight path, I don't consider the starting a starting area anything but the starting area.

I don't disagree that people are stupid, which is the jist of what I got from your post. I just find it offensive when people get lazy and just use it on everyone. When someone tells me, or a group which includes me, that I'm, or we, are going to "buy it anyway" it's like saying "You're going to make an illogical decision either way." which is annoying.

While I do personally prefer the look of the edited bits of video, there are a couple things to consider.
First of all, it's the first view of the game. It's not polished. It's not even close. Yes it may be somewhat indicative of how the game will look, but it's very early on and the graphics were nowhere near what the final product will look like.
Second, and I think more importantly, it's hard to take that example in context with the rest of the game, as others have said. Yes, in general I don't care for the heavy use of green hues in that video. However it does give off the essence of a damp, musty building.
If the video was closer to release, I might be a little worried, but I'll save my angst for when, and if, the game still looks soft and happy nearing the shipping date.

I'm not sure what I prefer. I like both styles. Maybe something in between? The best option would be if you could switch between them. That shouldn't be too hard to implement. Just apply a filter and voila!
But like someone said. This is probably not the final product.

Should I use a black nylon stocking or a tan one? LOL

Why is that the advice to people who like the darker settings is always "turn down the gamma/lighting", but when it gets reversed to "turn up the gamma/lighting" people feel insulted?

Because when you turn up the gamma, it just washes everything out :)

On the other hand, turning down your gamma just makes the green hue slightly darker.
Why is that changing gamma settings is even seen as a good solution to change the darkness setting of a game?

It's amazing how changing the colors a little makes the game so much more creepier. I like the altered footage to be completely honest. But Blizzard has it's mindset on the current art scheme and it's not going to change. I'm still super-psyched for the game. It will be dark in gritty in it's own way.
