View Full Version : Dear diii.net, please don't use popup ads, if you need our help, ask.

This is a little thread dedicated to brainstorming ways to give diii.net a little more cash flow. I'm sure other people have noticed the ad page that comes up before you can enter this site. That's not okay by me, it's completely unwelcoming and if diii.net is seeking more users, this is a counterintuitive method of expansion. I think diii.net could use a hand with cash, and if so, maybe we can brainstorm a way to help them so they don't have to resort to such an unattractive way to support itself.

Any comments? Ideas? I look forward to a future without an attack of the ad agencies, and layouts that flood the screens with haunting .gif images.

If places are willing to pay the site to advertise, why should you car all you have to do is the skip button is not hard and does not change what the site does.

Because some ads, unbeknownst to the site hosting the ads, have malicious content and run ads that could contain malware. I know this because my browser keeps telling me that I shouldn't go to this site because of malware from the ad servers.

I believe that's a move by IncGamers, their parent site, because StarcraftWire has the same thing.

You can donate here and also become a Site Pal with some added features for yourself:

What I'm not liking is this http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/interstitial.html?gr_i_re=http%3A//diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php%3Ft%3D730423&gr_ads_kv_url=adv=af171 place I keep getting forwarded to.

I have to agree. Even though I use a pop-up blocker, just now when I tried to enter it, this website managed to freeze my computer up for over a minute while attempting to load a video-popup.

My browser also tells me I shouldn't enter diii.net because it contains suspected malware.

But I like to live in the fast lane and enter anyway :smug:

Edit: This just happens sometimes, must be one of the ads.

Am I the only person who's never encountered anything anyone's mentioned, other than sponsor links in between posts which just appears as a thin spacer with a link for me?

I'm not a fan of popups, but I don't mind the inter-site "continue/skip to site" ads. It's just another click.

Ads in general are not a problem. But some of the ads that have recently started appearing on this site are; especially those from v8dc.com.

Probably why my post in this thread was deleted...

I particularly dislike this bit: "You agree to not interfere with the display of these adverts through banner blocking software or browser features."

No. I do not agree. Sue me, ban me, whatever. In fact such a statement is a violation of my rights in my country and, I'm sure in the country of origin of the website. After all, Germany and Portugal share similar laws concerning consumer and civil rights.

I will keep doing here what I always did in the web. It's my right to do so. I cannot be forced to swallow any kind of advertisement. That rule can't be any more fascist.

Well then krugar, get the fudge out if you are so vindictive. diii.net supplies us with a nice, smart diablo 2 hub. So what if we have to see some ads?

Eh? I'm not against ads in Diii.net!
Or anywhere else for that matter.

It's my right to do so.

I know he's banned but I'll just remind all of you of this:

This is a privately-ran website. This is not a public site, a government site, et cetera. Your rights are not yours to choose; everything you say is at the discretion of administration or moderation. This is the law of the internet yet some people don't seem to realize that every time you click "I Agree" you give up what you think are your rights. This does not apply to other people's property, in this case, dii.net's parent company.

Never flagrantly admit that you block ads on a free site which you use frequently when they have rules against it. That's just ignorant, and many feel it is just plain wrong.

Interesting how quickly that ban happened - especially to somebody who seems like adds a lot to the forums and seems like a nice guy.

I'm not against ads but that one rule seems unnecessary - is it even enforceable? lol. In addition I also get malware warnings periodically which makes me wonder how safe the ads are. I don't know if anybody has a problem with ads but I am sure everybody will have a problem with ads that are malicious.

I'm afraid it is very necessary to pay the bills.

Good to hear it's not enforceable.

How could you possibly be so hostile against such a dedicated, high-quality and free website?

dii.net and diablowiki was/is like the equivalent to Jarulf's guide for D1. There is no better resource. For all you know they pay out of pocket for this. You obviously enjoy it.

I've been reading this website since 1999, when Gaile was here, before Rush was. It's consistent. I use opera and I could grab and adblocker if I wanted, but I most certainly wouldn't deny them some meager graphics from loading if it helped them out.

I don't want to sound like a brown-nose, but c'mon now.

My post qualifies as hostile? Wow...care to itemize the text I wrote above and explain what the hostile parts are?

**edit**
I removed some stuff cause I don't feel like arguing.

This site gets a crapload of traffic (http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/diii.net) so I wouldn't feel too bad for them - they should be able to monetize that. Guess I'm annoyed cause I like that Krgar guy but I suppose if it was my site I'd do the same (well, maybe a warning first).

Speaking as a non Green Dude .. This site has the most informaton, the greatest knowledge base, the nicest people on any Diablo site that I have ever visited.

When I first got into D2, I did a trawl of sites and I hated every one. This place has great information, helpful people and an emphasis on courtesy.

I really don't think it's too much to provide them with a little monetary support - whether by ads or by Palship.

In addition to which, from the rules (http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/faq.php?faq=rules) which you agree to when you join this site and are on every page:
3. Thou Shalt Not Advertise.
<snip>
4. Sites carrying ad-busting software

So may I suggest that someone really shouldn't have joined if they don't wish to follow the site rules. It is no different to trolling, spamming or providing links to "naughty or graven images". It isn't accepted in the rules. :)

Good to hear it's not enforceable.

It is in as much that if we find out or suspect we will ban. My priority and that of everyone who makes these sites possible is to keep them up and running.

Guess I'm annoyed cause I like that Krgar guy but I suppose if it was my site I'd do the same (well, maybe a warning first).

There is a warning, it's posted in this thread.

Looks like an ad to me. I just hate it when they pretend to prevent your system from harm.

If it were google, it would most likely be in the URL.

MoonUnit

That isn't an ad. It's a warning that's displayed in yer browser if you are using firefox or chrome if a site is suspected of having malware.

nulio
05-07-2009, 15:44
It happens to me just when I'm using Safari in MacOSX. When using Firefox in XP it doesn't.

Since the forum itself wouldn't be the problem and the warning only appears sometimes, perhaps one fo the ads in the forum is linked to a site that's listed as suspicious.

Can't it be a pop-up in disguise? I mean, I've seen them in many forms, but not like you described.
