After a small reseach I've come up with a formula for D3 Skills Tree system that, if you're serious about your idea, will make your char a bit more logical and D3able.

So, it goes pretty much like this:

Tier 1
1 Active (which will symbolized the whole tree)
3 Passive (one of which has to a be a Tree boosting Passive)

Tier 2
2 Actives (1 can be a buff/shield)
3 Passives

Tier 3
2 Actives (1 of can be a battlefield managment skills like Taunt or Slow Time)
3 Passives

Tier 4
2 Actives (save best for last)
3 Passives

Tier 5
Hasn't been introduced yet, so make it only 4 Tiers of skills.

Conclusion:
17-19 Skills per Tree (numbers can be varied, ofc)

That's it. If you want to make your Class a bit more serious try it out

Very impressive. I think the skills should fit the character first and not the other way around though. I don't mean that as a negative comment towards you, because you are simply telling it how it is. I just hope no active or passive skills are sacrificed in character development to fit the "formula."

My Arcane Warrior would have to be pretty awfully overhauled to fit that, which gives me some serious heartburn!! My "Enchantments" are something of "pseudo-passives". I think if you just counted most of the Enchantments as "chance to cast/execute on attack/being attacked" like you did on your Soldier, it would take care of a good deal of the rewriting. I think I'll just leave it alone, maybe sometime add a note and/or rearrange the skills within the tiers to better match the layout. That's ok though, I think I'm gonna work on an additional variant. I think it'll naturally conform to that system a little better, and I think it'll be a little closer to my original vision anyways.

That layout does quantify their "more passives than actives" mantra, and like I said before, very observant! I think people could find this information very useful. Most fan classes are only made up of a couple dozen skills, so they may not run into any bottlenecks though.

Good thing I'm between games right now waiting for the ladder reset!

Hmm, I was just looking through Barb skills and the Berserker_Skill_Tree has a new image from a Blizzcast. It's hard to see, but I blew it up, and if skills with a tab under them are actives, then it looks like there are now 8 active skills (all down the left side, 2nd from bottom in 2nd column, and the blue icons in the 3rd and 4th columns) and 10 passive skills.

...and is that 7(!) tiers?

lol, yeah I've seen this pictures too, but since we know basically nothing about it-
If it's just a new design, due to changes etc- I've decided to follow the Blizzcon Skill Tree rules, which we know much MUCH about.

ofc Skill Trees arangment can be change at any time.

off-topic, but why does the barbarian in the skill icons look so much younger than the barbarian you play in the game?

ok, i'll shut up now.

Huh? =S
I didn't get that one..

Maybe a better question to ask is why the number of skills in the new screenshot is lower than the one presented at Blizzcon? Which skills didn't make the cut?

Ugh...it took me weeks to perfect the skill tree for my class idea back when it was for D2. Took me even longer to revamp it to match the D3 system. Now I hear they might do away with the 3-tree system all together. I understand that they have to tweak the system til it works, but all this flip-flopping is real making it hard to design a character class!

This screenshot also makes it look like some skills are specific pre-requisites for others... unless those arrows indicate synergies?

I think anyone who's planning to do a fan class should just do whatever they want to do, and keep their ideas flexible enough that they can be adapted to whatever arrangement the Blizzard folks finally settle on.

Of course some skills will be pre-reqs (can't remember where, but there was a Bashiok quote), just much fewer than D2 and also logical (such as Magic Missile -> Improved Magic Missile, where the latter is a passive to boost the former).

So just pre-reqs to stop you putting points into something which won't give you any benefit at all (why have more magic missiles if you can't cast one?).

I can not wait for the new game to come out but I am having a lot of fun with Brother LAz's version 12 for my Diablo 2. I was kinda getting stale on the version 1.09. Although I was a little disappointed that I could not use any of my already veteran characters. I do understand why though. I had a few snags in the game with the Gidbin and the last act with the enforcer outside the town. Theywere missing and I could not find them. Did anyone else hav any problems? So....can anyone create a class?:scratchchin:

The 4 tier character design is not a good design, if you think about it in terms of character growth and learning curve. With a 4 tier design you have excess to the highest tier at lvl 15. That would be the first chapter of D2. The 7 tier system makes a lot more sense. With the 7 tier system you will be 30th lvl when you first can take the most powerful spells. That’s about the lvl you are in the last chapter of D2. Slower exposure to the powers will give players better understanding of them.
