Greetings,

My little brother was playing the original Diablo the other day, and apparently he figured that pushing the power button on the PC is a proper way to shut it down. Yes he did this while running Diablo, and this is his computer otherwise I would have caught this earlier.

Well now of course this flaw has caught up to him and his character does not show up in the Diablo menu. I can see his character .sv file in the C:/Diablo folder. I have tried simple things such as moving it out load game, moving it in load game, to see if it would reload it or something but to no avail.

Is there a way to fix this at all or is there a program I can use to read this file and see if there are any obvious errors?

No he is not paying on battlenet it is single player.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you.

Well i dont know if this will work but you could try move your save file to another folder, create a new character and save it (make sure the save file has the same name as your previous character) then (while the game is still running) delete the save file copy your old save file back to the diablo folder and load it from the game.

The .SV file probably was corrupted. I don't think this can be fixed. In future, back up all .SV files to a stick or another folder. Better safe than sorry.

Further to the above, I don't know if there are any old trainer programs out there that would be compatible with single-player characters/game saves. If any ever existed, they were certainly less popular and therefore less developed or widespread compared to trainers for battle.net characters, so it's exceptionally unlikely you'll be able to find anything these days.

You're lucky it was just Diablo that got corrupted, and not the entire computer (most of the time it's fine, but I have seen some cases where windows was irreparably damaged by a power-off at the wrong moment).

Afaik, there is a D1 trainer on the D1 CD. But what is that useful for?
