View Full Version : Question about Poison Length Reduction and Venom duration

I recently began trying to understand poison damage, and when I keep delving too deep into its mechanics I can say I find it quite confusing. But anyway, my question is how do poison resist and poison length reduction work together? Say you have 50% resist and 50% PLR, how will that effect you being hit by 200 poison over 3 seconds? (example) And does the same apply to monsters resistances? Do monsters have poison length reduction too?
Another question ... this time about Venom skill. Venom is capped at 0.4 seconds, so 10 frames duration. How will this work with a 7/2/2 frame Dragon Talon?? Will less Venom damage be applied per kick? I never understood the whole 7/2/2 thing anyway, I dont know how the first kick can have 7fpa and subsequent ones 2fpa and how all that adds up into seconds or fractions of seconds. So if anyone could shed some insight into this I would really appreciate, thanks.

If you have 50% poison res and 50% plr, and you get hit with 200 damage over 3 seconds, then you'll take 100 damage over 1.5 seconds. I assume that you're reading the (updated) Tao of Poison?
I don't think that monsters have plr.
When you deal poison damage, it over-writes any current poison damage the monsters is taking so long as the new bit rate is highest. So, when you hit a second time with venom, the poison damage does not stack with the old poison damage, it over-writes it.

It just does. The first kick takes 7 frames and the second and third take 2 each. I don't know what you mean by "adds up into..."

Wouldn't there be 50 damage over 1.5 seconds? Half the damage, and THEN half the duration?

Are you referring to the Calculating Poison Damage (http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=711678) thread?
Poison Resist 50% would halve the poison damage rate and Poison Length Reduced by 50% would halve poison length: 200 poison damage over 3 seconds is the result of a damage rate of about 66 2/3 (200/3) poison damage per second being applied for 3 seconds, so PR 50% and PLR 50% would result in about 33 1/3 poison damage per second being applied for about 1.5 seconds, or about 50 poison damage over 1.5 seconds in total (as theBanger has pointed out).
Monsters don't have any PLR % (the only possible exceptions are Ancients whose magic items spawn with PLR % suffixes).
And there is a difficulty penalty for poison duration just like it is for resistances; meaning that in Hell your base PLR is -100%, respectively -40% in NM
So all poison dmg on humans (not monsters) lasts twice as it normaly would, and to have effective 75% PLR in Hell you need 175% of it
