Magic damage reduced by X i.e Dwarf Star/viper magi etc
Magic resistance 5-10% i.e safety shields
Magic absorb x i.e Spirit/Crescent Moon runeword

Anyone care to explain how numbers work if 1 bonespear from viper comes homing in on you? :scratchchin:

i think it goes

mdr -> magic resist -> integer sorb: when calculate reduced damage.

Ok, say a 100 pt bonespear goes through you. How much is actually reduced using the a/m gear as examples?

The following quote should give you the information you need:

# 44. How does "Absorb" really work?

The basic idea of absorb is rather simple, it couses portions of attacks that would normally damage you to heal you instead. There are a few points regarding it that cause confusion, however.

# There is a difference between percentage absorb and integer absorb. It is basically the same as the difference between DR% and DR (see section 25). Percentage absorb heals you by a fraction of the damage dealt, while integer absorb heals you by a fixed amount. For item examples we have Blackhorns Face with integer absorb, and Dwarf Star with percentage absorb.
# Absorb does not save you from one-hit KOs. The damage affects your health pool before absorb is applied. If the attack reduces your life to zero, you will die.
# Damage is applied in a predetermined order. It is as follows:
1) XvX penalty (for example Player vs. Player = -5/6)
2) Sorceress Energy Shield
3) Necromancer Bone Armor and/or Druid Cyclone Armor
4) Integer DR/MDR
5) Percentage resists (including DR%)
6) Percentage absorb
7) Integer absorb
This is relevant, because it helps you decide what type of damage reduction modifier will serve you best. Consult LanderZs damage calculator for further information: http://www.poweradvantage.net/d2dmgcalc.html
# Percentage absorb can never heal you on its own. It is capped at 40%, meaning that even if you have maximum percentage absorb, you will still take damage. Integer absorb does not suffer from this penalty.
# Absorb actually heals you two times the listed amount both to negate the damage and to heal by the same amount.
# The "magic absorb" modifier found on safety shields and Spirit Runewords (for example) only affects "pure" magical damage, such as the Necromancer bone spells. Elemental damages like Fire damage are not affected. This has been tested by Oramin.

Before saying anything: SORRY FOR MY POOR ENGLISH.

Quote from Arreat Summit:
"What is Magic Damage?
When we refer to magic damage to players, we are referring to elemental damage (Fire, Cold, Lightning). For example, the magic prefix on items that reduces magic damage reduces elemental damage."

Magic DAMAGE reduced = integer that reduces damage caused by fire/cold/light.

Magic resistance = has nothing to do with elemental damage. Resistences are to elemental damage as Magic resistance is to magic damage (bone spear).

Magic absorb = has nothing to do with elemental damage. Its like magic resistance but in this case is a sorb.

The correct name do "magic damage reduced" would be "elemental damage reduced". Because only in this case
its related to elemental damage, and in the other two they are related to magic pure (bone spear, part of hammer dmg...etc).

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

PS: Bone spirit is a physical attack

MDR only effects elemental? In that case blizzard should just update to simply 'elemental damage" instead.

Helluva confusing.

Indeed. Straight magic damage reduction affects the 3 elements (fire/lightning/cold) while magic absorb and magic resists affect only the magic resistance and not the elements.

There's a few things in the game that Blizzard could have worked out better wording for, and this is one of them.

Hope they didn't forget about this one for their 1.13 update!
