Does repairing the Hellforge Hammer increase the chances of getting a higher rune?

Arrrh this banana is pulling your leg.
I have gotten 29 Guls of 32 Hell HFs by repairing the hammer every time . Occasionally you'll get an eth Hellforge hammer, which will require you to hit the soulstone 6 times to smash it. But then you'll get a HR in addition to the HF drop.
Or (maybe) it's me pulling someone's leg :whistling:

I rushed a guy through hell today. He repaired the hammer and I got a mal. Best I've ever done.
Can't hurt.

This is the best way to get better rune drops:
First get a socketed Wirt's leg. Upgrade it two times so it is elite. Fill it with 3 perfect skulls. Get a full TP tome and use it with the upgraded/socketed leg to make a cow level portal. Go in and kill the cow king with the Hellforge hammer. After that you repair the hammer.
With this method you will get a gul 9/10 times.

you're supposed to upgrade the hellforge hammer to an axe, trade it on bnet for high runes, saying you have a gg glitched item

I thought this only worked when the moon was in a gibbous phase, and under a crescent moon you're supposed to use flawless skulls. And iirc, it was El runes under a new moon, Zods under a full moon, and Rainbow Facets under a half moon.
... or something like that.

Bad bad people, yes you repair the hammer first. It's known to help reduce the likelyhood of those hel's dropping. I don't know the formula but there's something to do with the state the hammer was in when it was dropped. Sorry can't help more than that.
Disregard the people above.
The game only checks to see what ilvl the hammer is to determine the % chance of runes (runes have a qlvl, and when breaking the hellforge only runes around the hammers ilvl can drop. An unmodified hellforge hammer has an even chance for all runes, because Heph is a set mlvl each game. Pre patch 1.10 it used to be possible to change his mlvl by dragging him to town (area level 99) and respawning him, but this no longer works. The only option now is to cube or imbue the hammer to increase it's ilvl.
This is usually too much work in most cases, and generally not worth it, as the increase is only minor.
I used the socket quest and then put a Zod in it, so it doesn't break when you smash Meph's soulstone with it. Now if I just manage to talk Meph through to give me more stones...

Cube the hammer? As in upgrade it like it's a normal unique item?
I tried that. It turns into the axe. When you try to smash the soul stone on the forge, it won't let you.

The cube recipe needs to modify the ilvl of the item, not the base item.

Indeed. The hammer upgrades to the axe because it has no upgrade code, and subsequently defaults to the first weapon in the data file, which unfortunately is the hand axe (it could have been the berserker's axe).

I thought that this was funny - A formula based on the durability of the hammer makes no sense to me.
Repairing has always been more superstitious than anything else, whether it be in crafting or the forge hammer. I've never gotten a hel in any hell forge, and in the majority of the hell forges I've done the hammer wasn't repaired.
As for hel dropping, I couldn't say that it has more or less chance to drop when compared to other runes, however I can say without any doubt in my mind that repair will not improve or weaken your chance of getting a more desirable rune.
