I am thinking about my second build, and everyone seems to regard the sorc as a good choice for MFing because of her killing ability and her teleport.
So, before I spend the time to build her, I am wondering how teleport works-- how do you control direction? How far can you tele at a time? Is there a down time/recharge time? Can she tele to places ahead where she has not mapped?
Thanks for answering a noob question...

She teleports to where the cursor is pointing when you activate teleport, yes it can be into unexplored areas

Is there a down time/recharge time?

Depends on your character cast rate as shown in this table:

FCR Frames
0% 13
9% 12
20% 11
37% 10
63% 9
105% 8
200% 7

Diablo renders 25 frames each second, so for example if you'll equip gear with total of 105% faster cast rate you'll be able to cast 25/8 = ~3 teleports per second.

So the more faster cast rate you have the the better when teleporting - it helps you avoid large packs of monsters before they can hit you if you teleport into unexplored area.
